The next instalment in the Disco Pogo Tribute series is the legendary electronic artist Aphex Twin.

This follows the hugely successful Disco Pogo Tribute to Daft Punk. Like Daft Punk, the people behind Disco Pogo have had a long-standing relationship with Richard D. James for over 30 years via their 90s magazine Jockey Slut.

The book is edited by Disco Pogo editor Jim Butler and features interviews, essays and features from the best music journalists working today.

The book features an iconic cover portrait of Aphex by seminal photographer Wolfgang Tillmans, plus a huge amount of great photography of Richard since the very beginning from some of the best music photographers in the world.

Thanks also to the designer of Aphex's logo Paul Nicholson who has opened up his archives to us and also the assistance and support from the label homes of Aphex - Warp, R&S and Rephlex. Thanks also to the people behind Aphex fan website Lanner Chronicle.

Hardcover edition, 250 plus pages and is beautifully designed and printed of course.

Originally released via the R&S Ambient sub-label Apollo in '92 and repressed more times than anyone could even begin to keep a count of, Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is not only one of the most important releases in both the Aphex catalogue but also electronic music as an entire entity. A richly woven tapestry of blissful sounds that offer the listener new surprises, twists and turns no matter how many times they venture through its cosmos. The techno equivalent of mainlining serotonin, Selected Ambient Works 85-92 should be prescribed on a daily dose twice a day for any and everyone reading this...

“It’s just too easy to make a standard dance track,” Aphex Twin said of his mindset back in 1992. “You’ve got to put a bit of thought into it to get something a bit different.”

‘Digeridoo’ was released on the Belgian R&S Records label in 1992, and originally peaked at #55 in the UK singles chart in May of that year. Over the last 32 years the track has become one of the essential Aphex Twin tracks in a gargantuan catalogue that continues to amaze and inspire.

“I wanted to have some tracks to play to finish the raves I used to play in Cornwall, to really kill everybody off so they couldn’t dance,” Richard D James, AKA Aphex, told Select magazine back in the 90s. “Digeridoo came out of that.”

Released as a 4 track EP that also included early Aphex productions (now classics) including the industrial, acidic clang of ‘Flap Head’ and hyperbolic futurism of ‘Isopropanol’, the release cemented a relationship with the R&S label that went on to release the ‘Xylem Tube’ EP and the pivotal album ‘Selected Ambient Works 85-92’ in the same year. The label’s owner & A&R Renaat Vandepapeliere reflected “When I first heard Aphex Twin’s music I said, ‘This is it!’, and everybody else said, ‘You’re crazy!’ …a lot of the hardcore R&S fans dropped us. To them it wasn’t music.”

‘Didgeridoo’ (Expanded Edition) is the first time the EP has been re-issued with extra material. Whilst digging in his DAT archive (allegedly stored in an airtight military ammo box), Richard James revisited the recordings, encoding them through a Nakamichi CR7e cassette deck, using the customised deck with vari-speed to encode at speeds “felt right at the time”. Alongside these CR7e versions, the original mixes have been remastered by Beau Thomas at Ten Eight Seven Mastering, offering a dilated insight into one of electronic music’s most endearing releases.

‘Didgeridoo’ (Expanded Edition) by Aphex Twin is available on R&S Records from 31st May 2024.

Extravagantly opaque, willfully vaporous — Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works Volume II, released by the estimable British label Warp Records in 1994, rejuvenated ambient music for the Internet Age that was just dawning. In the United States, it was Richard D. James's first full length on Sire Records (home to Madonna and Depeche Mode) under the moniker Aphex Twin; Sire helped usher him in as a major force in music, electronic or otherwise.

Faithful to Brian Eno’s definition of ambient music, Selected Ambient Works Volume II was intentionally functional: it furnished chill out rooms, the sanctuaries amid intense raves. Choreographers and film directors began to employ it to their own ends, and in the intervening decades this background music came to the fore, adapted by classical composers who reverse-engineered its fragile textures for performance on acoustic instruments. Simultaneously, “ambient” has moved from esoteric sound art to central tenet of online culture. This book contends that despite a reputation for being beatless, the album exudes percussive curiosity, providing a sonic metaphor for our technologically mediated era of countless synchronized nanosecond metronomes.

The new acid darling of the pirate radio stations

Electronic music without Aphex Twin – that would be like hip hop without the 90s. The “Mozart of modernity,” as some controversially call him, has shaped techno as well as ambient music of the last decades like no other – at least to the extent that the horrifying cover grin of Brit Richard D. James should be familiar to most music connoisseurs even outside the genre. Growing up in Cornwall, England, in the 1980s, James became interested in music as a teenager – mainly as a protest against the “bloody awful” records by the Jesus and Mary Chain that his sister listened to. In London, the hype around acid house began, and inspired by the young rave culture, he produced the Analogue Bubblebath EP in 1991 at the tender age of 19 with his friend Tom Middleton – and the scene went crazy. The British Mixmag praised James‘ work to the skies, the local pirate radio stations had found a new acid darling, and the Belgian label R&S Records took him under its wing. With Selected Ambient Works 85-92 , he released his first long-player in 1992, and if the title is to be believed, it even contains tracks that James produced when he was just 14 years old. The ambient techno record was widely acclaimed and made its mark on the ’90s with its atmospheric, melodic acid digressions.

A grin that shaped pop

As a co-inventor of so-called intelligent dance music, Aphex Twin tended to poke fun at the term: “I just think it’s really funny to have terms like that. It’s basically saying, this is intelligent and everything else is stupid. It’s really nasty to everyone else’s music. It makes me laugh.” And he also used different pseudonyms: as Polygon Window he composed the album Surfing on Sine Waves in 1993, under the name AFX he released Analogue Bubblebath 3 and other EPs in the years after. With his record Selected Ambient Works Volume II in 1994, James split the fans, because on the untitled, strictly numbered album tracks Aphex Twin said goodbye to his danceable electronic influences and instead tried ambient loops inspired by his lucid dreams – a radically different album than expected. At the same time, the Brit inspired the pop landscape of the 90s with this change of style, and even bands like Radiohead admitted their fascination with Aphex Twin. James’ scene-famous grin was first seen on the cover of the record …I Care Because You Do in 1995, and the album combined his penchant for experimentation with a symphonic approach.

Stylistically confident despite reinvention

Now, on the Richard D. James Album and the EPs Come To Daddy and Windowlicker, Aphex Twin experimented with a mix of drum and bass, jungle and abstract pads. In doing so, he managed to sound stylistically confident despite his constant reinvention, always going exactly where you wouldn’t expect him to go. In the end, he always made it onto the annual best lists of the biggest music magazines. His best-known song Avril 14th, used among other things as a sample by Kanye West, can be found on the 2001 album Drukqs, which this time relied on computerized piano compositions. In 2014, after years of silence, suddenly a test pressing of an unreleased album titled Caustic Window was found, spectacularly auctioned on eBay for a whole 46,300€. In the same year Aphex Twin’s comeback took place with the record Syro, and Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments pt2 followed in 2015, the second work that made use of a computer-controlled piano. That same year, he began anonymously uploading more than 200 unreleased tracks to SoundCloud – his fans soon found out he was behind it. “I’ve got all this music and I thought if I died what the fuck would my kids do?” says James. "So I just thought I’d give it away, then they don’t have to think about it.“
