If you listen to LA LOM's music with your eyes closed, you might find yourself in a world somewhere between shimmering tropical heat and a black and white Hollywood crime thriller. Music with the “twang” of rockabilly, the sensuality of Latin American rhythms and the raw sound of modern independent music, which has already found prominent fans such as Beck and Vampire Weekend. Behind LA LOM, abbreviation for The Los Angeles League of Musicians, are the three LA-born musicians Zac Sokolow (guitar), Jake Faulkner (bass) and Nicholas Baker (drums/percussion). In 2019 they got together to play at the historic Roosevelt Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard, by now they perform concerts in front of thousands of people, released the first digital singles of their Latin and soul instrumentals and attract countless fans to their popular social media profiles. Their album debut on Verve Records was produced by Elliot Bergman (Cage the Elephant, Major Lazer, Wild Belle).

Recorded in 1964 during two concerts at the venerable Greenwich Village venue, Cafe Au Go Go, two months after Astrud Gilberto's "Girl From Ipanema" became a Top 5 pop single. The focus of these sets, however, moved away from the Brazilian flavored fare, bringing Gilberto into the realm of a decidedly more North American style. The band features a young Gary Burton (vibraphone), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Gene Cherico (bass), and Joe Hunt (drums). There are a few personnel substitutions, with Helcio Milito (drums) and Chuck Israels (bass), respectively, filling in. Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.

Long sought after by collectors, an original copy of this LP can sell for upwards of $1,000 USD. Vinyl LP repressing of this collaborative album between to of Jazz's greatest starts. The evening before Louis Armstrong recorded this album, both he and Miss Fitzgerald were appearing in an all-star concert also featuring Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson that was recorded for an album entitled Live at the Hollywood Bowl (1956). The following day the two singers, along with the Oscar Peterson Trio, were in a Los Angeles studio to record this gem of an album. With no time for rehearsals the songs were all set in Louis' key to make it easier, but this in no way inhibits Ella's performance. Another challenge for Pops was the fact that the material was not his normal repertoire, meaning he had to learn things on the fly in the studio. Again there's no hint of any issues, which all goes to highlight Armstrong's innate musical ability.

One of the biggest-selling jazz albums of all time, not to mention bossa nova's finest moment, Getz/Gilberto trumped jazz samba by bringing two of bossa nova's greatest innovators - guitarist/singer João Gilberto and composer/pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim - to New York to record with Stan Getz. The results were magic. It's release helped fuel the bossa nova craze in the United States and internationally, becoming the first Grammy Award-winning album from non-American artists. It brought together Stan Getz, who had already performed the genre on his LP Jazz Samba, João Gilberto (one of the creators of the style), and Jobim, a celebrated Brazilian composer (and also one of the main creators of the genre), who wrote most of the songs in the album. It became one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time, and turned Astrud Gilberto, who sang on the tracks "The Girl from Ipanema" and "Corcovado", into an internationally celebrated musician.

The album contains popular songs, such as "Don't You Pay Them No Mind" and African American gospel and folk related songs written by Simone herself, such as "Take Me to the Water" and "Come Ye." After this album title, Nina Simone was sometimes referred to as "the high priestess of soul." Nina Simone was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist who worked in a broad range of musical styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. Simone's musical style fused gospel and pop with classical music, in particular Johann Sebastian Bach, and accompanied expressive, jazz-like singing in her contralto voice.

Coltrane's home in Dix Hills, Long Island, has been suggested as the site of inspiration for A Love Supreme. Coltrane's exposure to Ahmadiyya Islam has also been suggested as a source of influence.

LA LOM's concert at Thalia Hall in March 2024 was a special night. Just a few months before, they had played a sold-out night at the Empty Bottle in Chicago. The crowd was so enthusiastic and the demand to get into that show was so high that the group knew Chicago was an important place for their music. Having graduated from playing little bars and dance parties in Los Angeles to big theaters within the span of about 6 months, LA LOM had a strong desire to keep the energy of the tightly packed spaces in LA that shaped their music, no matter where we were playing. They accomplished that at Thalia Hall in Chicago. Built a round bright red stage and put it right in the middle of the room, the hall was completely packed, and there were people on all sides of the round stage dancing and screaming loudly, even getting up on stage with us and dancing for certain songs. Jacob Butler (sometimes referred to as the 4th member of LA Lom) recorded all the videos they had made from the start. He was there at Thalia Hall, shooting from all sides of the stage and capturing the crowd as well. Also recorded on tape, LA LOM were left with great live footage from one of their most exciting shows to date. A combination of original songs along with covers of classic cumbia from Colombia, Peru and Mexico, plus an old soul ballad from Smokey Robinson. Released for the first time on vinyl, exclusively for Record Store Day 2025, this LP is pressed on translucent red vinyl to match the color of the round stage with a piece of the Marley flooring from the show tucked into each record. The late Abbey Lincoln was one of the greats in jazz singing and composition. 65 at the time of this recording, the singer performs a fiery musical statement and maintains her own distinctive manner of delivering a lyric. After the smash success of “Ella and Louis” in 1956, an album sequel was quickly set up by Verve Records. And what a sequel it was: “Ella and Louis Again”, released following year, was a double LP this time, and just as wonderful as its predecessor. In contrast to the previous collaboration, this album features seven solo vocal tracks by either Armstrong or Fitzgerald amongst its dozen duet tracks. The fantastic Oscar Peterson Trio returns as the duo's backing, this time along with drummer Louie Bellson.
