Youth OF Today was initially active from 1985 to 1990 before reforming in 2010. The band played a major role in establishing the “youth-crew” subculture of hardcore, both espousing and evolving the philosophies of the straight-edge and vegetarian lifestyles. Formed in Danbury, Connecticut, by two members of the hardcore band Violent Children, Ray Cappo (vocals) and John Porcelly (aka Porcell, guitar) were aiming to start a straight-edge band at a time when most old-school straight-edge bands had disbanded. Having difficulty finding a bassist and drummer, Ray and Porcell found help from two high-school friends, Graham Phillips and Darren Pesce, who had played with Porcell in a band called THE Young Republicans in the past. In 1986, Underdog vocalist Richie Birkenhead joined the band on second guitar. With this lineup, the first Youth OF Today full-length album was recorded, Break Down The Walls. More than just an album, it’s an anthem for a way of life.

In 1990, Judge had a new song entitled “Forget This Time” and there was a desire to record it and get it out into the wild. Additionally, the band had been touring and made some improvements to some of their existing songs; one standout was “The Storm,” which now had a breakdown in the middle that didn’t exist in the previous versions. Mike was excited about covering “When The Levee Breaks” (which was a bonus track on the Cdep, now a streaming bonus track) and the idea of his local buddy Todd Schwartz doing the harmonica solo. With these three songs the guys headed to Don Fury’s studio on Spring Street to record what became “The Storm” EP. One day Mike showed up on his Harley and the idea came about to run a microphone cable out into the street to record it rev, which you can hear on this version of “The Storm.”

The story of Tørsö starts on the Punch tour with Italy’s Holy in 2013. Punch guitarist Keith and Holy drummer Giacomo put together a transcontinental powerhouse adding bassist Jasmine of NEO Cons and Everybody ROW (among many others) and vocalist Ethan of Ritual Control. Farside was a melodic punk band from Orange County, CA, founded in 1989. Their sound was a mixture of the late ’80s post-hardcore (dagnasty, Hüsker DÜ and THE Descendents were big influences), ’90s alternative metal (helmet, Quicksand), and the power-pop sensibilities of the late ’70s (Elvis Costello), and as a result the band never quite fit in on any bill they were booked to play. This resulted in the band never being completely definable, which suited the members just fine. Many current bands have cited Farside as an influence, and it’s clear that their music left a lasting impression on their dedicated and loyal fan base. The Monroe Doctrine, the band’s final album, is the culmination of ten years of progression for the band and reflects their diverse mixture of punk, post-punk, indie, and pop melodies.

To most fans of hardcore, Judge is a band that needs no introduction. Judge took the ideals and positive goals of Youth OF Today and infused them with beefy guitar licks, introspective lyrics, and a hefty influx of New York style. The Bringin’ It Down full-length took Judge to an entirely different level. Funneling the energy of New York Crew through crunching guitars that had never been applied to their powerful brand of hardcore was an enormous shift. As abruptly as Judge had burst onto the scene, in 1991 they played a now infamous “final” show in Florida. Then, in May of 2013, Judge reunited in their hometown of NYC as headliners for the Black ‘n’ Blue Bowl. The late eighties were an exciting time to get caught up in the hardcore scene. While many of the early eighties pioneers of the music had moved along, the scene went through something of a renaissance with a new crop of energetic kids who had seized the power of the music and molded it into something that was relevant to the style of their times. Leading the pack in this regeneration was Revelation Records, who released a clutch of seven-inch singles and albums by bands like Sick OF IT ALL, Gorilla Biscuits, Bold, Judge and Chain OF Strength that defined where the scene was at that time. Somewhere in central New Jersey, a group of kids attending Ewing High School were spinning these records incessantly while attending many of these bands’ live shows. The combination set their minds ablaze with inspiration and so they started Mouthpiece in January of 1990. In between getting their band from the basement to the clubs, an abrupt change happened within the hardcore scene. Most of the bands Mouthpiece wanted to share the stage with had suddenly broken up or changed paths. With no concern for the changes in sound and style going on around them, they went along with their original agenda and unconsciously became the band to lead straight edge hardcore into the nineties until their demise in 1996. The seed for NO Escape was planted in 1989 in Greenpoint, Brooklyn at Tim’s apartment. Tim Singer (of Boiling Point ‘zine at the time) and Steve Crudello (of Turning Point at the time) met while living in NYC. About a year later, Steve and Tim (both Jersey kids) became housemates in Ocean City, New Jersey. Steve started jamming with Chris Brisiel from Delaware on drums and Ben Lerman from Philadelphia on bass. After a few practices and a few songs were written, Tim soon tried out and NO Escape went from being a fun idea to a reality. And they hit the ground running. It was a fast-paced, productive, and memorable couple of years where they made lifelong friends, played with some incredible bands, and had some fun along the way. Rochambeau stands out because of the unique sound created by the band. However, a major part of why it sounds the way it does has to do with where the band recorded and who engineered it. Produced by Eric “E” Garten at For The Record Studios, this album has a polish to it that just wasn’t sonically happening when punk bands recorded at that time. As a result, Rochambeau captures the sound of the 1990s and also holds up over time. This four piece featuring Mike “Popeye” Vogelsang on vocals, Rob Haworth on guitar, Brian Chu on bass, and “Bob Violence” Beshear on drums, came together to create a sound that was unique to this band. With such influences as Hüsker DÜ, THE Descendents, Elvis Costello, as well as seminal hardcore bands of that time, Rochambeau occupies a special place in not only the band’s history but in the history of hardcore and post-punk music as a whole. Touching on such vast topics as heartbreak, racism, being your own worst enemy, and just about everything in between, Rochambeau continues to speak to new generations of listeners who hear it. As a result, their fanbase has remained as rabid and continued to grow, even today. The album represents the breakthrough that this post-hardcore band had, while also reminding bands in the present of the necessity to push boundaries and make music from the heart.

Farside was a melodic punk band from Orange County, CA, founded in 1989. Their sound was a mixture of ’80s post-hardcore (dag Nasty, Hüsker DÜ, and THE Descendents were big influences), ’90s alternative metal (helmet, Quicksand), and the power-pop sensibilities of the late ’70s (Elvis Costello), and as a result, the band never quite fit in on any bill they were booked to play. This resulted in the band never being completely definable, which suited the members just fine. Many current bands have cited Farside as an influence, and it’s clear that their music left a lasting impression on their dedicated and loyal fan base. The Monroe Doctrine, the band’s final album, was the culmination of ten years of progression for the band and reflects their diverse mixture of punk, post-punk, indie, and pop melodies.

Youth OF Today was initially active from 1985 to 1990 before reforming in 2010. The band played a major role in establishing the “youth-crew” subculture of hardcore, both espousing and evolving the philosophies of the straight-edge and vegetarian lifestyles. Formed in Danbury, Connecticut, by two members of the hardcore band Violent Children, Ray Cappo (vocals) and John Porcelly (aka Porcell, guitar) were aiming to start a straight-edge band at a time when most old school straight-edge bands had disbanded. Having difficulty finding a bassist and drummer, Ray and Porcell found help from two high-school friends, Graham Phillips and Darren Pesce, who had played with Porcell in a band called THE Young Republicans in the past. At the end of 1987, Sammy Siegler (ex-SIDE BY Side) became the new drummer and in 1988, Youth OF Today recorded their classic second LP, We’re Not In This Alone. The songs were born from the band’s dedication to straight edge, positive living, and the strength of the both the individual and of a generation. Full of energy and inspiration, this record was an essential step in the development of hardcore.

Spaced live up to their name, blending hardcore with out-of-this-world sounds to create an explosive and hallucinogenic landscape. Originally formed in 2019, the Buffalo, NY-based band would burst onto the scene in 2021 with their four-song demo, followed by the 2022 compilation Spaced Jams and a split single in 2023, both on New Morality Zine. On This Is All We Ever Get, the band pulls from a wide range of influences while still staying centered around individuality. Working with Jay Zubricky (mindforce, Terror) at GCR Audio in Buffalo, NY, Spaced knocked out recording over a few days in May 2023 and sent the album off for mastering with Will Killingsworth (orchid) at Dead Air Studios. The eight tracks on This Is All We Ever Get are enthralling and dynamic, with the longest run time hitting two minutes and thirty seconds. Opener “Landslide” leads with a huge bounce, as vocalist Lexi Reyngoudt’s shouty approach drives off the band’s circling rhythms primed for side-to-side mosh. Spaced has quickly become one of the buzziest bands in the genre thanks to their blend of “farout hardcore,” garnering praise from press including BrooklynVegan, Stereogum, and Revolver. The band has been able to take their high-energy live show across North America and Europe, performing alongside bands like THE Armed, Snapcase, GEL, and SPY.

Popeye was an established fixture in Southern California, both personally and creatively, as the former frontman for melodic hardcore greats Farside. There was little in his routine to suggest at that point that Popeye’s life was headed for any sort of major change. It felt like an ideal life, in fact, until it didn’t. “It was very solitary, and I guess I was OK with that—or at least I told myself that I was OK with that—until I met the woman who is now my wife,” he explains. “That absolutely changed everything.” At the tail end of 2021, Popeye (Farside) uprooted his entire life to move across the country to the city of Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he would eventually come to meet the rest of his new band Calling Hours: guitarists Thomas McGrath (the Commercials) and Tony Bavaria (the Commercials), bassist Garrett Rothman (don’t Sleep), and drummer Jim Bedorf (don’t Sleep). For Brian McTernan, a celebrated producer with a nearly 30-year history of shaping some of the biggest hardcore records of all time—including albums for HOT Water Music, Turnstile, Circa Survive, and THRICE—advancing Calling Hours from the idea stage to the recording stage was personal: “Popeye is one of his favorite singers of all time,” Rothman explains. “He told me he named one of his cats after Popeye.” The outcome of that collaboration is Say Less, a seven-song record for Revelation Records that revisits the band members’ melodic, post-punk sensibilities while working in a decidedly contemporary direction.
