In 1987, Pet Shop Boys released their second album Actually, which became another huge hit album for the duo, debuting at the #2 spot on the UK Albums Chart upon it's release. The album was produced by Julian Mendelsohn, Stephen Hague, Shep Pettibone, Andy Richards and Pet Shop Boys. This period saw Pet Shop Boys reach new critical and commercial heights with three #1 singles, "It's A Sin", "Always On My Mind" And Heart", and 'What Have I Done To Deserve This', their #2 single featuring Dusty Springfield. As Neil Tennant puts it: "I felt at this time that we had the secret of contemporary pop music, that we knew what was required."

Fresh and unconventional

Formed in 1981, the band originally consisted of the three musicians: Neil Tennant, Chris Lowe and a drum machine called “Dusty”. Neil Tennant, with his distinct vocal style and poetic songwriting skills, was the frontman of the band. Chris Lowe, a master of synthesizers and keyboards, provided the hypnotic electronic sounds that made up their unique musical identity. In the early days, the Pet Shop Boys performed in small venues and underground clubs, often experimenting with their sound and pushing the boundaries of traditional pop music. Their songs, with catchy melodies and thoughtful lyrics, resonated with audiences who craved something fresh and unconventional. Despite initial difficulties, Pet Shop Boys’ determination and perseverance gradually gained the attention of the music industry.

Pop icons in a creative frenzy

With their breakthrough debut vinyl Please (1986), the Pet Shop Boys burst onto the scene with hits like West End Girls and Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money). The success of the album laid the foundation for their subsequent releases. In 1987, they released Actually, which further solidified their status as pop icons. The vinyl included iconic tracks such as It’s a Sin, Rent and the duet with Dusty Springfield, What Have I Done to Deserve This, which topped the charts. After the release of Actually, the Pet Shop Boys embarked on a prolific journey, repeatedly presenting albums that pushed boundaries and proved their musical prowess. Highlights of their discography in the 2000s include Release (2002), a more introspective and guitar-driven vinyl, and Fundamental (2006), which tackled political issues with songs like I’m with Stupid and Integral.

Charming storytellers

Their unique blend of catchy melodies, poignant lyrics and innovative electronic production techniques left an indelible mark on pop music, influencing countless artists and shaping the musical landscape of their time. One of the Pet Shop Boys’ most important contributions was their ability to combine intelligent, introspective lyrics with infectious pop hits. Their songs dealt with themes of love, longing, loneliness, and social issues, often conveying thought-provoking messages amid the catchy melodies. Tracks like West End Girls, It’s a Sin and Being Boring showcased their lyrical prowess, resonating with a wide audience and establishing them as master storytellers. They seamlessly blended danceable beats, synthesizers and samples to create a distinctive sound that epitomized the synth-pop genre. Their production style was distinguished by its sophisticated and refined nature, pushing the boundaries of what was possible in pop music. In addition to their musical influence, the Pet Shop Boys also made their mark with their extravagant visual aesthetics and theatrical live performances. They relied on extravagant costumes, elaborate stage designs and eye-catching music videos, challenging traditional gender roles and norms.
