The concept of the “human zoo” has existed in art and literature for centuries, thus Electric Six recognizes and accepts it is not breaking new conceptual ground by naming its tenth studio album Human Zoo. It recognizes and accepts that old ground is being broken. Like teeth.The first known reference to a human zoo is believed to be from the mid-to-middle 12th century, when the famous Flemish monk Wenslaus De Trappe wrote of his base desires to cage human beings and charge money to display them in humiliating fashion in his classic 14 Trappist Monk Tales. From there, the human zoo concept snowballed and could be found everywhere from Restoration literature (Lord Percy Nutton's Northumberland Abbey), to Nazi propaganda (Die Mensch Zooiedieschennel) to 20th Century American counterculture (Tal Rosenberg's 20 Days on Acid – I Am a Pinhole Camera), the last of which where the author famously imprisons his lawyer/traveling companion in a cage and places him at the corner of Haight and Ashbury to stand trial for helping contribute to a bad trip.Electric Six recognizes the legacy of the human zoo concept and throws its hat into the conceptual milieu with a great deal of respect and humility. Syrophenikan is the third studio album by Canadian ambient/electronic music group Delerium, originally released in 1990. While still firmly planted in the darker sound that defined early Delerium, this record also expands the influences with drones, heavy African percussion beats, and even hints of the future sounds of Delerium's Nettwerk era releases.

First released in the late summer of 1991, some see Spiritual Archives as a turning point album, a final release of the of the band's origins before the beginning of the exploration to the newer sound. Possibly the darkest work in the Delerium catalog, with brooding melancholy soundscapes, and somber ambience.

The second "mid-era" Delerium album, Spheres 2 follows and expands upon the space influenced themes and feel of its predecessor. Melodic abstract ambient that is all at once melancholic, trippy, and enchanting.

Spheres was originally released in 1994. It could be considered the first release of the "middle era" Delerium, Seeing Leeb and Fulber starting to move away from the really dark sounds of the earlier work into a an approach to ambient that's more spacey and minimalist. Some of the more ambient pieces here could be easily played along with works such as Brian Eno's "Apollo" or early Tangerine Dream.

The San Francisco 4-piece VANIISH began when singer/guitarist Keven Tecon (ex Wax Idols, The Soft Moon, Veil Veil Vanish) left his previous bands after his mother's death in early 2013. “I was on tour in Eastern Europe in the middle of winter when it happened and it was too much to handle. I couldn't keep it up.” After returning home, Tecon decided to focus entirely on a new project along with fellow Wax Idols and Veil Veil Vanish member Amy Rosenoff (bass) and SF music-scene luminaries Adam Beck (guitar/keyboards) and Nick Ott (drums). The album Memory Work is both dense and spacious, combining the atmosphere of early 4AD with the psychedelic shoegaze of Creation Records. It envelopes the listener into its world of eerie soundscapes and surreal lyrics. “There is an interesting mix of synths, guitars, samples, drum machines, and live drums. We like the idea that you can't tell what's real and what isn't.” The album was produced by Monte Vallier (Weekend, The Soft Moon, Wax Idols)The title track is the sound of machines breathing and fluids pumping, with a pulse beat overladen with brush strokes of synth. “Kaleidoscoped” ditches the monochrome for crystallized shards of guitar and a sparkling chorus that's hard to see coming. “Search and Replace” is vicious and would be more at home in 2080 than 1980 while the addictive melody of “Merge” is the closest the album comes to an actual pop song. “Succession” gives the second side of the album some breathing room with its sparse production and icy spikes of guitar.
