The contributions of the late Detroit producer James DeWitt Yancey -better known to the world as J Dilla- to the world of hip-hop can't be overstated, and nowhere is his legacy more apparent than his work as a member of Slum Village. A founding member of the trio, (Alongside rappers T3 and Baatin) Dilla provided the group's distinctly esoteric, free-wheeling sound,built around winding basslines, quirky drumbeats, subtle low-end frequencies, and classic jazz & soul samples. Against the backdrop of Dilla's rich production, T3 and Baatin's free-flowing style of rhyming would also earn wide critical praise, leading to comparisons as the successors to A Tribe Called Quest. Dilla himself went on to earn his own legend of brilliance, inspiring a slew of classic artists like Nas and The Pharcyde, to newcomers like Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar. "ebs (Elite Bomb Squad) made their mark in the early '90s as a rap group with a distinct sound and style. Featuring Cryptic One, Jest One, Tell, and Saf as MCs, and Screw as the DJ, the group was known for their experimental, dark beats crafted by Cryptic One, paired with the unique lyrical styles of each MC. The group, active from 1992 to 1994, pursued a record deal, culminating in a meeting with Dr. Dre of Yo! MTV Raps. Though the group disbanded after that meeting, the demo they had presented to Dre later leaked on YouTube, gaining renewed attention and leading to its eventual release on vinyl by Chopped Herring Records in 2024.

The origins of EBS trace back to Westbury, Long Island, where it began as a graffiti crew. Founded by Stop One and Desone, who met in 6th grade over a shared love of graffiti and weekend hip hop radio shows on Kiss and Wbls, the crew spread its name throughout local schools and public spaces. Inspired by the legendary KGB crew, Stop One coined the name "Elite Bomb Squad" while watching a World War II documentary. Dex/Deks and Shane joined the crew early on, helping to shape its identity.

As EBS’s reputation in graffiti grew, younger members like Safari (Saf Two) and Jest One joined, and the crew eventually transitioned into music. With a lineup of four distinct MCs and a DJ, they brought their creative vision to the rap world. Though Cryptic One and Jest One went on to make music with Atoms Family after the group's split , other members pursued careers outside of music.

Despite their brief time as a rap group, the legacy of EBS lives on through their music and the close bond they’ve maintained over the years. Stop One expressed pride in seeing how the group carried the name forward, transforming EBS into something bigger than just a graffiti crew.

Big shout out to Cryptic One for finding the Original 4-track cassettes and converting them for this release. Just remember, these tracks were never finished off in a studio and while they have been tidied up a lot, they are demo-flavoured.

"What if we made an EP together?" Miscellaneous first floated the idea to Degiheugi back in 2018, during a signing session. Six years later, the MC and the beatmaker bring the idea to fruition with an album titled "Everything’s Fine," a project their previous collaborations hinted could be something truly special. At its core, the album stems from a simple desire: to go back to basics, creating something raw and authentic. One beatmaker, one sampler; one MC, one mic. Nothing more. This minimalist approach turned out to be highly fruitful: ideas flowed, crossed paths, and enriched one another in a fluid, prolific creative ping-pong. The duo has openly shared how much fun they had making this record — and you can hear it! The sound is rich and warm, with thunderous beats. Sampling master Degiheugi, with his signature touch, has crafted each track like a finely cut gem, brimming with intricate details: vibrant vocal samples, brassy jazz-club horns, and gritty blues guitars. After "Degiheugi Orchestra," a project that allowed him to fulfill a dream — reimagining his powerful, cinematic music with a classical orchestra — this return to his roots is a true rejuvenation for the beatmaker. Is it a lingering influence from his recent symphonic adventure? This new release is brimming with violins, cellos, and other strings, which the producer arranges with masterful skill: haunting melodies that never feel repetitive, a hypnotic Mongolian viola on "Sunshine Distributor," elegant violin flourishes on "Stay in Your Lane Part II" (one of the album's highlights), and a baroque twist with an irresistibly unlikely groove on the brilliant "Medieval" (featuring the excellent A.S.M.), another standout moment in an album full of them. Degiheugi’s productions are narrative yet nonlinear — perfect backdrops for Miscellaneous to showcase the full range of his lyrical talent. Sharpened by three EPs released this year with his duo Chill Bump, The anglophone rapper is at the peak of his craft, impressive with his vocal dexterity, musicality, and diverse flow, effortlessly switching from smooth West Coast phrasing to the gritty delivery of a tough, tattooed guy. With a background in rock and afrobeat, the rapper from Tours shares with Degiheugi a penchant for blending genres, navigating effortlessly between hip-hop, jazz, drum’n’bass, electro, and dub, without ever losing their unique artistic coherence. This coherence is also reflected in the album's lyrics, with the title itself capturing its duality, shifting between disillusion and hope, gravity and lightness. "Everything’s Fine." The statement is painfully ironic, as our world crumbles while we look the other way. Some tracks offer a critical analysis of how we live, consume, and destroy our planet, while some of the other songs, more carefree and hedonistic, encourage us to savor the pleasures life has to offer. Starting with this intense and impactful album.

I love a drop where the artist hits me up. There's something special about a talented cat reaching out to get his project released through Herring. Musa aka Howard Lloyd hit me up with a DAT transfer of joints that had previously been lost in time. They eventually showed up 30 years later after much digging and boy, was it worth the wait.

Cats will probably know Musa from his solo stuff as Howard Lloyd, his work in Sputnik Brown as well as his 90's crew House of Reps featuring Wyld Bunch. Dude has been a fixture on the Long Island and NY scene since the early 90s. He recorded his first demos in 1994 at the legendary Firehouse Studios and here for your listening pleasure, we have 4 tracks and 3 dub versions from those sessions including one mixed by our man C-12. The remaining 3 tracks on this stunning 10 tracker are by his crew House of Reps and were recorded down in GA in 96.

Berlin, Germany, sometime early, early nineties. 3 MCs share a dream, a dream of taking this rap thing to the max. It wasn't long before Doubleface, Boogieman and Big Sal started making noise in the streets of the capitol and by the mid-nineties the band Harleckinz was a household name in Germany's rap music scene. It is these demos here which would eventually break the band and secure various major deals. The rest is history - yet another beautiful rap story originated in Hip Hop's golden era.
