The legacy of the late, legendary country vocalist Patsy Cline, whose storied recordings of the 1950s and 1960s with producer Owen Bradley helped establish the genre’s pop-crossover “Nashville Sound,” receives a new chapter on Record Store Day (April 12) with Imagine That: The Lost Recordings (1954-1963), a revelatory collection of previously unreleased recordings from Elemental Music/Deep Digs.

This unprecedented, limited edition two-LP set, fully endorsed by the Patsy Cline Estate, features 48 unissued tracks, all released legitimately for the first time. They survey the full breadth of the singer’s artistry, from her first days as a professional musician with Bill Peer & the Melody Boys and Girls in the early ‘50s to the apex of her popularity, just weeks before she tragically died at the age of 30 in a plane crash on March 5, 1963.

Drawn from radio broadcasts, TV shows, and private recordings, these meticulously restored performances cast a fresh spotlight on Cline’s luminous, erful voice, and eschew the opulent strings and vocal choruses of Bradley’s productions in favor of an intimate, unadorned, earthy sound. Affecting alternate versions of Cline’s chart-topping crossover hits “Walking After Midnight,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Crazy,” and “She’s Got You” are included. She is heard duetting with such fellow country stars as Cowboy Copas (who died in the crash that took Cline’s life), Ferlin Husky, Red Foley, Bobby Lord, Ernest Tubb, and Lonzo & Oscar.

Co-produced by award-winning archival producer Zev Feldman, Cline discographer and authority George Hewitt, and engineer Dylan Utz, Imagine That features a detailed track-by-track discography; a historical note by writer Martin Melhuish; reflections on Cline’s art by musicians k.d. lang, Marty Stuart, and Ray Benson; and more.

Vinyl LP pressing. Patsy Cline was, quite simply, one of the best, most revered and most influential female country artists in the history of the genre. Her achievements and recordings in her tragically short career helping to open the door to success, and establish a creative template for a generation of artists who followed in her footsteps. She was a strong woman who stood up for herself, helping to emancipate fellow female country acts. Her contract with the label Four-Star restricted her to recording material by a small selection of songwriters and, having scored a debut No.2 in 1957 with Walkin' After Midnight, she did not have another hit until she signed directly to Decca in 1960. After that, she had huge country and pop hits with the classics I Fall To Pieces, Crazy and She's Got You, by hot new writers like Hank Cochran, Harlan Howard and Willie Nelson. Her longtime producer Owen Bradley embraced the new 'Nashville sound' pioneered by the legendary Chet Atkins to crossover in to the pop world and create a very different sound from her earlier honky-tonk and rockabilly recordings. This collection rejoices in some of her finest and most successful recordings released before her untimely death in 1963 to create a loving overview of her short recording career. It is steeped in that warm, lush Nashville production. It includes her first chart entry A Church, A Courtyard, Then Goodbye and sees her evolve through her career with Walkin' After Midnight, Crazy Dreams until getting to the ultimate Patsy classics Crazy, She's Got You, I Fall To Pieces and Heartaches.

Limited vinyl LP pressing. This album, first released in 1967, collects Patsy Cline's biggest hits. Producer Owen Bradley surrounds Cline's full-throated, emotionally charged vocals with lush, sophisticated arrangements that set the standard for Nashville's "countrypolitan" sound. The album consists of Cline's biggest hits between 1957 and 1963. The album contains Patsy Cline's signature hits including "Walkin' After Midnight," "I Fall to Pieces," "Crazy," "She's Got You," "Leavin' On Your Mind," "Sweet Dreams," and "Faded Love." The version for "Walkin' After Midnight" was pulled from the 1961 recordings rather than the original recording made in 1956 while Cline was still under her Four Star Records contract. "So Wrong" and "Strange," two lesser known hits, are also included. Several songs are included that were never hits on the American Country or Pop Top 100 Charts: "You're Stronger Than Me," "Why Can't He Be You" and "Back in Baby's Arms." A slower version of "You're Stronger Than Me" was a b-side to the single "So Wrong" back in 1962, but this collection contains Cline's initial recording of the song that was never released. The released version made it's way to #103 on the U.S. pop charts. "Why Can't He Be You?" was a b-side to the single "Heartaches" and reached the #107 position on the U.S. pop charts. "Back in Baby's Arms" was a #1 hit in Australia briefly in 1963.

What praises haven't been lauded the immortal singing talent of the late, great Patsy Cline? She died at the height of her career, at age 30, with two other stars of the Grand Ole Opry, and her manager, in a private plane crash near Camden, Tennessee, on the group's return to Nashville from Kansas City. Before that ill-fated flight, though, she left a musical legacy as one of the most influential and successful female vocalists of the 20th Century.
In the late 1950s and the '60s, country music was essentially a singles medium. This album, first released in 1967, collects a dozen of Patsy's biggest hits — all of them from the country singles market — including "Walkin' After Midnight", "Sweet Dreams (Of You)", "Crazy", and "I Fall to Pieces".
Producer Owen Bradley surrounds Cline's full-throated, emotionally charged vocals with lush, sophisticated arrangements that set the standard for Nashville's 'countrypolitan' sound. And trust us, on this 200-gram QRP pressing, mastered by Sterling Sound, Cline's seductive vocals have never sounded clearer or richer.
Cline's life and career has been the subject of numerous books, movies, documentaries, articles and stage plays. She has sold millions of albums through the past 50 years, giving her an iconic fan status, similar to that of country artists such as Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton. In 1992, the U.S. Postal Service honored her, along with Hank Williams, on a U.S. postage stamp. And in 1995 she was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Cline was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999.
Before Shania Twain found a new (though not necessarily improved) way to combine country and pop in the 1990s, this was the top-selling country album of all time by a female artist.
