The music is less frenzied and aggressive than we're used to, as the musicians sharedtheir exploration of new tools with a more contemplative approach. To be sure, both Brötzmann andNilssen-Love summon the usual energy here and there, but it's a genuine revelation to hear them feelout new sounds in real-time, whether it's the former caressing the rheumy nasality of the contra-altoclarinet, or the latter reveling in the sustained resonance of his new gongs. Still, even if theywere trying out new tools, their rapport and level of engagement was just as strong and deep as ever.Colliding schedules prevented them from ever wrapping up the production on the album, but they beganplanningfor it during the pandemic. Sadly, it fell to Nilssen-Love to shepherd the project at home,but it was worth the wait. Massive industrial noise and free jazz blasts_ 16-17 returning with new material after 25 years. Founded 1983 in Basel by saxophonist Alex Buess and former drummer Knut Remond, they have been shaping the forefront of a new sound area. Playing an abrasive distorted mix of dub, hardcore and free jazz that lead to a meeting of likeminded heavy heads that temporally took part in the band e.g. Kevin Martin (The Bug, Techno Animal) or G.C. Green (Godflesh). After marking their presence and extensive European tours, the band officially split up in 2000. For the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the legendary Machine Gun recordings at the Lila Eule in Bremen, Peter Brötzmann put together a trio with the Berlin pianist, composer Alexander von Schlippenbach and the percussionist Han Bennink, who already sat on the drums 50 years ago. They were so pleased with the music ,that they decided to release it and continue to play gigs as the trio.Recorded live at Lila Eule, Bremen on 26.5.2018, the venue celebrates his 60th anniversary that year and was the place the original legendary Machine Gun sessions were recorded!Peter Brötzmann - tenor saxophone, b-flat clarinet, tarogato Alexander von Schlippenbach - pianoHan Bennink - drums ps: Machine Gun was originally recorded in May 1968 by an octet consisting of influential musicians of new jazz and improvised music. The band name is a nod to the eponymous album by Sonny Rollins from 1962, but the project refuses to sound nostalgic. Every performance leads to completely new music, with every player bringing influences from their own generation and background.Recorded by Bartosz Szkielkowski at Pardon To Tu, Warsaw, October 3rd, 2022 (except for LP format extra track).In this quartet Amado gathers three of his strongest longtime influences: German pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach,Norwegian double bass player Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and American drummer Gerry Hemingway. For Amado this bandrepresents a deep dive into his own formative roots, something he has been dealing with more and more in these last fewyears. From the outset this ad hoc quartet hit the gas, launching into a frenzied, high-octane set with alto saxophonist Rasmussen engaging in a furious tightrope-walk of upper register screams while O'Rourke unspools some of the most gnarly guitar noise this side of Masayuki Takayanagi. Of course, with such flinty, seasoned improvisers there are thrilling peaks-and-valleys, such as the extended hydroplaning guitar O'Rourke sculpts mid-way through the first extended piece, with the rest of the group taking a much-deserved pause. The pause sets the stage of a thrilling recalibration, with Corsano first diving in with an epic improvisation only to recede for one of Sakata's singular vocal improvisations, a throaty incantation as dynamic and visceral as his alto playing. Rasmussen returns, with Sakata picking up his clarinet, and suddenly the twinned reed blast that started the whole performance toggles into more spacious interplay, tapping into jazz orthodoxy without being held captive by it. - The entire recording is a testament to refined listening. Even at the most scorching peaks each player is deftly attuned to one another's sonic projections. Their name is an artistic manifesto; a phrase refering to the Austrian political disaster (Ibiza Affair) from May 2019, which revealed the corrupted system of rightwing politics and lead to the government's fall.Their debut EP ''1'' from 2021 immediately caught international attention/radio play and Zack Zack Zack got invited to gothic/postpunk festivals in Germany and Sweden.
