Literally translated from Italian, il bene comune means "the common good." Ineffable and ambiguous, the term in itself offers no intrinsic clues as to what its application should entail, although we generally view it in a positive light. Engaging in acts we perceive as furthering the common good can give us immense personal satisfaction, while participating in collective actions moved by this desire can be among the most rewarding experiences available to us as humans. But the very malleability of the term makes it a powerful tool to be used by the imaginative and the ambitious to further their own agendas. Those able to offer an appealing vision of the common good can wield enormous power, profoundly influencing individual behavior on a global scale since the concept functions as both the carrot and the stick, a tool with which to reward obedience and discourage dissent through massive and diffuse social pressure. Governments, media organizations and opinion leaders vie to manipulate mainstream perception of the common good, and skillful use of comunication and propaganda can shift this perception in such a way as to radically transform acceptable behaviours into taboo, and vice versa. Of course, dissidents as well generally rally around an alternative vision of the common good, and the effectiveness of such movements hinges in part on their ability to spread this vision among the greater populace, infiltrating and undermining the mainstream narrative until such time as the alternative vision achieves mainstream acceptance. Composed during Italy's second Covid lockdown in the winter of 2020-21 through digital correspondence and illicit face-to-face meetings, the underlying structure of this music hinges on shared familiarity with the basic modules, predominantly simple, repeating motifs. This simplicity allows for significant individual freedom for each member of the sextet, however this freedom must be exercised responsibly in order to maintain balance within the greater structure and avoid total collapse or loss of the central message. Individual actions undertaken without due attention and consideration for the common good will cause unforeseen consequences, difficult to predict and manage.

Ghost Horse is one of the most vital groups in Italian modern / experimental jazz. A highly cohesive sextet featuring some of the most representative musicians on the scene, Dan Kinzelman - tenor sax, bass clarinet, Filippo Vignato - trombone, Glauco Benedetti - tuba, euphonium, Gabrio Baldacci - baritone guitar, Joe Rehmer - bass guitar, and Stefano Tamborrino - drums. On January 26, 2020, Ghost Horse closed their winter tour with their first concert at Area Sismica, a legendary venue for creative music in central Italy. This would be their last concert before Italy went into Covid lockdown in early March, and this raunchy mid-fi stereo room recording perfectly captures the sweat and energy of this great band in full power.

Adagio is a special meeting between two generations. Filippo and Hank got to know each other in the Italian-American band Pipe Dreaam and thanks to a deep musical and human mutual understanding they decided to collaborate also in the intimate format of the duo. First in 2019 with Ghost Dance and now with this new chapter. Zenophilia is a shapeshifting ensemble, able to suggest a small New Orleans brass band, the 90’s era New York loft scene, or a blues band from Chicago. Despite an abundance of overseas influences, the band is entirely Italian, counting members among the most creative in the contemporary scene, with vast and varied performing experience throughout Europe and the globe. Zeno De Rossi, drummer and bandleader has spent his entire adult life on stage, working with luminaries like Vinicio Capossela, Guano Padano and Mike Patton, but also accompanying Italian jazz legends Franco D’Andrea and Enrico Rava. Piero Bittolo Bon, on (almost all) saxophones, can always be counted on for musically daring contributions, and is known as one of Italy’s most forward-thinking improvisers. Thirty-something trombonist Filippo Vignato is at the forefront of a generation of emerging soloists and improvisers, active in avant-jazz sextet Ghost Horse and collective quartet Pipe Dream. Glauco Benedetti, on tuba, euphonium and pocket trumpet shares space with Vignato in Ghost Horse and is equally at home everywhere from pop to classical music. While originally active as a quartet, the new record Come On Down (And Follow Us) and subsequent tour dates have seen the ensemble expand into a sextet, featuring contributions by legendary vocalist Dean Bowman and percussionist Simone Padovani. Described by the press as a ‘Tone Poet’ and ‘Avant-garde Gospel Singer,’ Bowman has performed and recorded with John Scofield, Don Byron, Lester Bowie and Steven Bernstein. Completing the lineup is Simone Padovani on percussion, with an extraordinary ear for color, whose collaborations include Amiri Baraka, Gianluca Petrella Cosmic Renaissance and many others.

Hora Records is pleased to annouce the release of Unscientific Italians Play The Music of Bill Frisell – Volume 2 on November 25th 2022. This new chapter follows the acclaimed Volume 1, which was released in 2021 and received praise world-wide both from music critics and the community of Frisell Fans, leading the band to be awarded as ‘Band of the Year 2021’ by Italian jazz critics pool ‘Top Jazz’. The ensemble Unscientific Italians, led by pianist, arranger and composer Alfonso Santimone, features some of the most gifted performers and bandleaders on the Italian scene: Fulvio Sigurtà and Mirco Rubegni on trumpet and flughelhorn, Filippo Vignato and Federico Pierantoni on trombone, Cristiano Arcelli, Piero Bittolo Bon, Francesco Bigoni, Rossano Emilli on reeds, Danilo Gallo on bass and Zeno De Rossi on drums. The new volume will be published on vinyl, digitally, and in a special LTD edition Double CD together with the Vol.1 with the blessing of Bill Frisell himself, who generously offered some of his sketches for the covers artwork. Bill Frisell is undoubtedly one of the most influential masters in today’s jazz landscape. However, his compositions remain unexplored, perhaps because of a lack of critical distance, perhaps because their apparent simplicity hides impenetrable folds to those who lack the right perspective. Musically speaking, Unscientific Italians is not a tribute or an orchestral rendition of Frisell’s music, but rather an idiosyncratic rewriting and orchestration that borrows his compositional and instrumental language. The first four tunes are a reinterpretation of the entire ‘Some Song and Dance’ suite from 1989 Frisell masterpiece album ‘Before We Were Born’
