Growing up between cultures

Bob Marley, whose full name was Robert Nesta Marley, was born on February 6, 1945, in the rural village of Nine Mile in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica. He grew up in poor circumstances, which greatly influenced his music and activism throughout his life. Marley’s mixed heritage – a Jamaican mother and a British father – brought him into contact with various cultural influences at an early age. In 1963, he formed the group The Wailers with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. The Wailers released a number of successful singles in Jamaica in the 1960s, but it was not until the early 1970s that they began to enjoy international success. In 1972, the Wailers signed a recording contract with Island Records and released their breakthrough album Catch a Fire. The album was a critical and commercial success and introduced Marley’s music to a worldwide audience.

Legend status

The Wailers followed Catch a Fire with a series of classic albums, including Burnin’ (1973), Natty Dread (1974) and Rastaman Vibration (1976). These albums helped cement Marley’s reputation as one of the world’s leading reggae artists. In 1976, Bob Marley and The Wailers disbanded, and Marley began his solo career. His first solo album, Exodus, was released in 1977. The album was a huge success and solidified Marley’s status as a global superstar. Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, Marley continued to release successful albums, including Kaya (1978), Uprising (1980) and Confrontation (1983). He also toured extensively around the world, and his concerts were always sold out. In 1977, Marley was diagnosed with a form of skin cancer. Despite his illness, he continued to record and tour, but in the early 1980s his health deteriorated. He died on May 11, 1981, at the age of 36.
