"Even if it doesn't sell well, let's create records that carry the scent of culture. I want you to perform Japanese jazz by Japanese people." Inspired by these words from the director, Hiroshi Matsumoto decided to record the album "Megalopolis." The concept is "Tokyo." Drawing inspiration from the rapidly changing cityscape seen from the airplane window, Matsumoto began production. Together with Hideyo Ichikawa, Kunimitsu Inaba, and Motohiko Hino, the four musicians positioned themselves in a circle to see each other's faces and movements. They intentionally recorded without detailed planning.

The result includes the suite-like masterpiece "Tokai no Ichinichi," the longing for lost things portrayed in "Nostalgia," the exhilaration and thrill of viewing the city from above in "Megalopolis," the bittersweet ennui of "Serenade," and the raw intensity of "Tokai no Iradachi." This is a brilliant work that vividly portrays the megacity and its people through sharp, creative performances. The original release was part of Victor's "Nihon no Jazz" series. Text by Yusuke Ogawa (universounds / Deep Jazz Reality)

Sharps and Flats, led by Nobuo Hara, has been a driving force in Japan's big band jazz scene with its diverse activities and distinctive musicality. Among the many works produced throughout their long career, 'Little Giant' stands out as one of their most iconic albums. Originally released in 1970 as part of Victor's Japanese Jazz series, this album is notable for the participation of renowned composers and arrangers such as Masao Yagi, Kiyoshi Yamaya, Norio Maeda, and Masahiko Sato. In addition to their original compositions, the album features unique arrangements of pieces by Oliver Nelson, who had a close connection with Sharps and Flats.

The album's intricate and adventurous arrangements, combined with the band's high-level performance quality, are truly remarkable. You'll be captivated by the hipness of "Little Giant," the strength of "Dark Horse," the cutting-edge sound of "Orbit 8:11," and the sophistication of "Flexibility." This dynamic performance, marked by a perfect balance of tension and relaxation, showcases the full potential and allure of Sharps and Flats. This album is a masterpiece that brings out the best in the band.

In the 1950s, the Big Four, led by George Kawaguchi, was a pioneering force in Japan's modern jazz scene, gaining immense popularity. Despite changes in its lineup, the group continued to make a significant impact on Japanese jazz. The album 'George & Sleepy' was originally released in 1969 as part of Victor's Japanese Jazz series. While the original liner notes described it as an attempt to recreate the nostalgia of the George Kawaguchi Big Four, this album is far from just a retrospective. Tracks like "Lover" and "Charade" nostalgically evoke the classic Big Four, offering pure enjoyment. Meanwhile, the album also impresses with more contemporary elements, such as the refined groove of "Tuesday Samba" and the exotic, beat-driven "Vietnam." This thrilling album masterfully showcases the timeless appeal of jazz, blending the past and present through the deep, skillful performances of these jazz veterans.

Has there ever been such a mysterious 'Footprints' before? This is a masterpiece in which the legendary guitarist Shungo Sawada takes on a new mainstream style of playing. Active since the 1940s, Shungo Sawada built the foundations of the modern jazz scene in Japan through the formation of the famous combo Double Beats and the presidency of the Mocambo Sessions. Although he is a legendary guitarist, he has surprisingly few albums under his own name. Among them, this work 'Formation' from the Victor 'Japanese Jazz' series is Sawada's ambitious work and is highly regarded as his masterpiece. The album opens with Wayne Shorter's 'Footprints'. It is dignified and refined, but there is a hint of simplicity in it's cool appearance, making it very tasteful. The album also features the explosive and fast-paced 'Formation' and the jazz-rock approach of 'Unlucky Guy,' before concluding with 'Chief Crazy Horse,' also written by Shorter. The album is diverse yet unified in tone, making it an extremely polished album. It's a special release that captures the image of the 'new mainstream' in Japan. Released in 1980, this was Kyouhei Tsutsumi's first collection of works recorded abroad, capturing the essence of the West Coast during the peak of AOR. The album was recorded in Los Angeles and features an impressive lineup of musicians, including session regulars from Steely Dan, such as Victor Feldman (percussion), the late Carlos Vega (drums), known for his support of James Taylor, a then up-and-coming Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), and the late Tommy Morgan, one of America's top harmonica players, renowned for his work in films and TV dramas. The relaxed West Coast band ensemble beautifully complements the vibrant vocals of Iwasaki, making it a standout piece. The album includes popular tracks among global city pop fans, such as "Street Dancer," the urban-feeling "Kiss Again," arranged by Tsugutoshi Goto, and the AOR-tinged slow number "Rose," also arranged by Goto.

The album includes standout tracks like the masterful Japanese boogie tune "Private File wa Aketa Mama de..." with funky production by Tatsuya Nishiwaki, the dance number "Doyoubi no Party" written by KAN, and "Yuukyuu Kyuuka," which features a pre-Shibuya-kei sound crafted by Yasuharu Konishi. It also features the single "Samishisa Nara Hitotsu."

Throughout the album, the natural and relatable life of a single woman in her 20s during the bubble era is vividly portrayed. Matsumoto Iyo's distinctive voice, sweeter and more poignant than ever since her debut, shines through and resonates with listeners, holding its own against the rich, layered digital sound.
