Nanocluster Vol 1. Is An Album With Some Serious Pedigree. It Sees Immersion (Aka Malka Spigel And Colin Newman Of Influential Groups Minimal Compact And Wire Respectively) Collaborating With Some Of The Finest Left Field Artists Of Our Era: Tarwater, Laetitia Sadier, Ulrich Schnauss And Scanner. The Project Was Born Out Of A Brighton Based Club Night, Also Called Nanocluster, Run By Spigel And Newman Alongside Writer, Broadcaster And DJ Graham Duff, And Promoter Andy Rossiter. The Club Features A Range Of Influential And Cutting Edge Music Acts. But The Unique Aspect Of The Evenings Is That Each Show Climaxes With A One Off Collaboration Between Immersion And The Headliners. The Songs Having Been Written And Recorded In The Studio In Just Three Days Prior To The Performance - Or One Day In The Case Of Schnauss. "It Could Have Just Been A Series Of Performances." Says Newman.? "But The Fact That We Had Built The Tracks In The Studio For The Performances Means We Had These Recordings." Says Spigel. Gliding & Hiding' presents one of post-punk's maverick spirits at her finest: Malka Spigel sprang to prominence as bassist and vocalist with the legendary Minimal Compact. She's also an internationally acclaimed photographer and video artist. Alongside her partner and long term collaborator Colin Newman, she's also one half of the electro-kosmiche duo Immersion. The pair are also members of the unique art-pop quartet Githead. Yet often, Spigel's most personal work is to be found on her solo albums.1993 debut 'Rosh Balata' is a contemporary rock album sung in Hebrew, with 1998's 'My Pet Fish' showcasing an idiosyncratic amalgam of rock and electronics, whilst 2012's 'Every Day Is Like The First Day' is a full blown psychedelic pop record, with guests including Johnny Marr, Alexander Balanescu and Julie Campbell (aka Lonelady).Now, 'Gliding & Hiding' gathers together Spigel's gorgeous 2014 'Gliding' EP, with reworked tracks from the 1994 mini-album 'Hide'. The result is a collection that ranges from sunshine pop, to minimal breakbeat techno, all the way to blissed out rock.For the 'Gliding' material, Spigel is joined by Newman, on guitar and keyboards, Ronald Lippok of Tarwater/To Rococo Rot on drums, and Gil Luz and Uri Frost of Mambas, on keyboards and guitar respectively, with additional guitars from Julie Campbell, and Matthew Simms of Wire. These songs began life as live recordings from a gig at London's Lexington, but were then refined in the studio. Yet they retain the sound of a real band, bouncing off each other's considerable talents'Gliding & Hiding' serves as a career overview, whilst the reworked compositions prove how utterly contemporary her sound is. Theme: collaboration. Or how to remain creative in the modern world. Nanocluster started as a bespoke one off pop up gig that turned into an album series. Built around Colin Newman from acclaimed UK post-punk band Wire and his partner in life and sound Malka Spigel from Minimal Compact with various guests, they define collaboration. Colin met Malka when he produced her band in 1985.The collaboration started there. They became a couple and created their own projects like the instrumental electronic duo Immersion in 1994 and Githead in 2004 - spaces where they both 'feel really comfortable.' Growing out of Immersion, Nanocluster was birthed as a series of one-off gigs at the Rosehill in their new hometown of Brighton in 2017 with an added cast of influential and cutting edge musicians. These were not ad hoc jams. The songs had been written and rehearsed prior to each performance. This adventure led to a debut album, Nanocluster Vol 1, released in 2021 with Stereolab singer/guitarist Laetitia Sadier, German post-rock duo Tarwater, electronic musician Ulrich Schnauss and experimental artist Robin Rimbaud (Scanner). Released again as double 10 inch with each collaboration taking up each disc, the new album Nanocluster Vol 2 has further developed this idea with a stark beauty that sounds like a future pop with sleek lines and unexpected great melodies. Disc one is built around Thor Harris, the charismatic percussion player from Swans and many other projects, who they met and performed with at South By South West in Austin, Texas in 2023. Thor adds ideas, his tuned percussion instruments, clarinet and trumpet to the sessions. Disc two is built around Cubzoa (Jack Wolter from the band Penelope Isles) who brings his musical craft, beguiling voice, guitar and much more.
