Patrick Holland is no stranger to ghosts. In the last several years, the Montreal-based musician/producer has become accustomed to odd noises, electronics breaking, misplaced items, and, on a recent occasion, a glass shattering spontaneously next to him. Annoying, to be sure, but he's made peace with it; the unknown, after all, is only frightening if we allow it to be. This attitude is at the heart of Holland's new album - addressed in part to an unnamed, pseudo-paranormal "other," You're The Boss is his first foray into guitar-driven indie pop, full of upbeat reflections on relinquishing control. Like most touring musicians, 2020 found Holland at a crossroads. Known primarily for his electronic releases under aliases such as Project Pablo and Jump Source, he'd spent the last several years traveling the world playing DJ sets and festivals. Behind the scenes, he was also working as a mixing engineer, producer and remixer, lending his technical prowess to Tops, Copy, Jacques Greene, Homeshake, and more. Over a period of several months, Holland wrote and recorded the album in tandem, playing most of the instruments himself as well as writing and singing lyrics for the first time in his recorded work. The resulting record is a fitting re-introduction to Holland as an artist. Singles "Sinister Bell" and "Nice Try" feature earworm arrangements of sunny guitars and velvety vocal harmonies (including backing vocals from Tops' Jane Penny, David Carriere and Marta Cikojevic). Elsewhere, Holland mixes his otherworldly synth textures with saxophone solos, by Chris Edmondson, on tracks like "Sink to Dusk" and "The Shame Of It All" creating a moody, contemplative atmosphere reminiscent of his past work. Despite covering a lot of sonic ground, You're The Boss also sounds remarkably cohesive, a testament to Holland's airtight production and mixing capabilities. It's ironic, in a way, that an album about relinquishing control would turn out to be such a masterful display of creative faculty.

Co-produced with Metronomy's Joseph Mount, electro-pop artist Tatyana's debut album is a careful fusion of her classical harp training with her keen sense for pop production and songwriting. Peter Sagar - also known as Homeshake wrote the majority of his fifth studio album, Under the Weather, in 2019, when he was going through a long, unrelenting period of sadness. "I was in a deep, deep depression," he recalls of that time period now. Sagar and his partner were living in Montreal, and while everyone was out being social, he was inside listening to ambient music, binging Star Trek, and writing songs. (Sound familiar?) "It was a bit of a dark pit," he says. "That's kind of what the whole album is about." Under the Weather is hazy and moody, the pace slow as syrup, and from beginning to end, a fog falls over every synth and guitar line. "Oftentimes when you're in a dark place, you're supposed to journal and that helps release the pressure," Sagar says. "For me, it always found its way into the music." Capturing the cloudy sound of a depressive funk was no simple feat, especially in the headspace Sagar was in for over a year. For that reason, he decided to enlist his friend, Jerry Paper's Lucas Nathan, to help with production on the record. Having Nathan contribute helped Sagar dial back some of the "dry, pristine digital sound" that defined his fourth studio album, Helium, and add back personal analog touches that drew people to the Homeshake project in the first place. As Sagar readies for the album's release this September, the record he wrote about feeling isolated, alone, and despondent has begun to seem eerily prescient. "I've been writing about feeling isolated my whole life," he says - but with age, he has come to understand them better. "I had a fairly clear idea what the album was going to be like based on where I was emotionally at the time," he says about Under the Weather. "I just try to make music that is honest about how I'm feeling."

This music is hard. Not in the sense of machismo or of complexity or of book-smarts or even tunelessness (there's melodies for days), but in the sense that you will come into contact with great pain. It's probably Sarah's, but it might be yours, and as such this disc needs to be handled carefully, as though it glows with some kind of half-life accrued from traumas across a lifetime. Pain, indeed, is one of the ways we can go the deepest, like Fred Nietzsche says (and I'll try not to over-intellectualise, the album doesn't): "Only great pain, that long, slow pain that takes its time and in which we are burned, as it were, over green wood, forces us _ to descend into our ultimate depths_ I doubt that such pain makes us `better' - but I know that it makes us deeper."

Over his first three albums, Homeshake's Peter Sagar followed his own idiosyncratic vision, a journe that's taken him from sturdy guitar-based indie-pop to a bleary-eyed take on lo-fi R&B. Now, with Helium, Sagar is putting down roots in aesthetic territory all his own. It comes through not only in the gauziness of the production, but also in the vulnerability of the songs themselves. Everyone Sagar encounters here _ including himself _ seems to be a step removed from present reality, whether by technology ("Anything At All"), solitude ("Just Like My"), or sweet fantasy ("Like Mariah"). The record is stitched together by a series of instrumental interludes, synthesizer explorations whose haziness adds to the suspicion that this is all an uncanny dream. Primarily written and produced over the summer of `23, It's Over follows the loose trajectory of a not-quite-relationship from the year before. But, more than that, it's an album about modern dating, alienation and the confines of existing online.If you've heard Tatyana's name before, it's probably because she released a debut album back in 2022, Treat Me Right, co-produced with Metronomy's Joe Mount, a record she describes as more of a collaboration. For It's Over, Tatyana took control of every aspect of the album's creation, from the production (she co-produced it alongside Mikko Gordon) to the artwork and the technology she used throughout. "This record made me technically proficient because I really pushed myself," says Tatyana. "I figured out a lot of things that I didn't know before. In the past, I allowed others to lead the charge and I'm not doing that any more."Born in London, before moving to Russia, Holland and Singapore in her teens, before eventually studying music at Berklee College in the USA - which she attained on full scholarship - and then back to London, Tatyana imbues her music with both haywire technical proficiency and encyclopaedic, far-flung tastes.
