The Brazilian-Serbian duo Duc In Altum returns to Rhizome following their 2020 digital mini-album As Above So Below. Our fifth vinyl EP on the label, Midnight Sun, finds Duc In Altum experimenting with dance floor acid rhythms and breakbeat-house grooves. The relentless remixes come from two other music friends, the Romanian icons Priku and Sepp.

“Midnight Sun” demonstrates the duo's acidy reflexes. Clever chords both center and accent the melody. The 303 line expands into the seething bass beneath as the track progresses into a deep dance floor burner.

Priku remixes “Midnight Sun” with his signature groovy, breezy style. Light chords drift above transformed 303, now a monster tech house bassline. The sun beckons.

The second side begins with “Yanomamis” and a journey through the inner worlds of Duc In Altum. The track begins with winding pads, effects, and an initial silvery breakbeat. The center of the track shifts perspectives to unveil a dreamy house groove before the breakbeat returns to call us back.

A remix of “Yanomamis”by Sepp closes out the record as the dance floor psychic yet again crafts the perfect rolling groove. It's a fitting Sunwaves-savvy party track and only gets better each time that glorious groove breaks the tension.

The third vinyl release from Seattle/LA imprint Rhizome Records comes from label cofounder Kristijan Risteski aka Kinjo. Previous productions from Kinjo include a single on sublabel Rhizome Forms and a 3-track release on SF’s P.U.N.C.H.I.S. With his first vinyl pressing, Kinjo perfects a signature deep vibe while recruiting the talents of Uruguay’s Z@p and Romanian Dragomir for a pair of remixes. “Marxian” rolls out a techy percussive architecture along with the alluring yet dissonant call of dystopian synths. The subsurface layers crackle and shift, revealing a never-ending array of sophisticated effects. Z@p provides the remix on side A, wasting no time to transform the original with his moody yet playful excavation. An expertly crafted electro pulse supercharges the alluring tones of the original to unleash a dance floor ready weapon. Side B features a long form remix treatment by Romanian minimal technician Dragomir. At over 13 minutes, Dragomir’s interpretation extends the original’s chemistry across a vast landscape, carefully examining each element. A deeply psychedelic gem, the Dragomir remix synthesizes afterhours aesthetics with the dark side of jazz.

A fourth vinyl arrives from Seattle/LA label Rhizome Records. The catalog returns to South America with 2 original productions from Gustavo Fridman of Buenos Aires, Argentina. An impressive up & coming DJ & producer, Gustavo Fridman has already released on underground labels Sous-Vide, Welter, and Tip Tap. Alongside the spacey originals, Romanian maestros Sublee and Ritmico (Emi & Suciu) offer expanded interpretations. The title track “Dios Habla Hoy” kicks off the ep with cutting edge minimal percussion work and breezy atmospherics partnered with a celestial yet melancholy melody. The techy breakbeat and meandering effects deliver a nostalgic sound reminiscent of Cadenza classics. Sublee’s remix of “Dios Habla Hoy” deconstructs and resynthesizes the original into a cosmic journey. While tones and texture remain, Sublee adds a massive groove to drive his trancy reinterpretation. Following the breakdown, synths cascade into eternity to create an emotional, dancefloor-tested moment. “999” opens the record’s second side with a jazzy afterhours vibe.
