Blue Bossa In The Bronx: Live at the Blue Moroccois a never-before-released recording of jazz trumpet icon Kenny Dorham captured live at the Blue Morocco jazz club in The Bronx, NY in 1967 featuring Sonny Red, Cedar Walton, Paul Chambers and Denis Charles. Transferred from the original tape reels that were recorded by engineer Bernard Drayton, the limited-edition 180-gram 2-lp set was mastered for vinyl by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab and pressed at 33 1/3 RPM at Le Vinylist. The elaborate booklet includes liner notes by jazz author and scholar Bob Blumenthal;plus interviews with artists who knew or were inspired by Kenny Dorham such asEddie Henderson, Jeremy Pelt, Steven Bernstein, Reggie Workman, Dan Morgensternand others.

"Quiet Kenny" is yet another reminder of what a trumpet giant Kenny Dorham was. Whether limning ballads such as "My Ideal", "Alone Together", "I Had The Craziest Dream", and "Old Folks", or investigating the timelessness and intricacies of the blues (his originals in this set with "Blue" in their titles), the former Charlie Parker cohort and ex-Jazz Messenger exhibits his subtle swing, personal sound, and finely-honed harmonic sense. Along the way these reflections and connections with Bird, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, Harry James, and Louis Armstrong make for a rich legacy. Recorded in 1963, Una Mas was the first album to feature the dynamic frontline of trumpeter Kenny Dorham and tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, a potent team that would go on to collaborate on numerous classic albums under each musician's name including Henderson's debut album Page One which was recorded just 2 months later. Along with a tremendous rhythm section of Herbie Hancock, Butch Warren, and Tony Williams, the quintet delivers joyous performances of three Dorham originals.

One of the most active bebop trumpeters, Kenny Dorham started in the big bands of Mercer, Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Billy Eckstine and Dizzy Gillespie and eventually landed in the Charlie Parker Quintet. In addition, he was a charter member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, recorded as a sideman with Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins and replaced Clifford Brown in the Max Roach Quintet. Throughout his career he can be heard playing trumpet on various recordings with Lou Donaldson, Sonny Stitt, Fats Navarro, Kenny Clarke, Mary Lou Williams and many more musical legends. “Quiet Kenny” is a jazz masterpiece. Recorded by the great Rudy Van Gelder with a group of musicians playing at the top of their game, this title continues to be one of the most collectible Jazz LPs due to its high demand and short supply.

Sometimes in the course of our exploration of potential titles to reissue, we come across a true gem that somehow escaped mainstream popularity. Our new all-analog Hq-180 of Matador by trumpeter Kenny Dorham and his quintet is the latest and perhaps most crystalline example of this. There has never been a single 180-gram pressing available. It has only been reissued (officially) once in 50 years. When you hear it, you'll scratch your head raw that this under-appreciated gem has been missing for so long.

Working with a soulful Jackie McLean on alto, a loose and swinging Bobby Timmons on piano, and the locked-in rhythm section of Teddy Smith on bass and J.C. Moses on drums, the playing is spontaneous, energetic and expressive. Check out the frenetic interplay between Timmons and Moses during the long trailing section of "Melanie".

Recorded in a single day in 1962, Matador contains the sprawling epic McLean-penned "Melanie" (a suite in three parts), as well as Dorham's smoldering "El Matador" and a stirring take on "Beautiful Love". Throughout the session, Timmons, Smith, and Moses provide sublime support while Dorham and McLean trade sinewy solos. Emotional musical exploration ties to readily approachable post-bop structure that make for a snappy, yet heady, mix of tunes that put a tap in your foot while engaging your head and heart.

Chris Bellman cut Matador from the original analog master tape (one of the few that survived the Universal warehouse fire of 2008, lucky for us) and the sound is revelatory! Tight acoustics of the Soundmaker Studios provide tightened bass, crystal-clear drums and beautifully rounded tones from Dorham's and McLean's horns. This is another fine example of Impex Records cutting through the fat of modern music-making to reveal the very essence of the music and the giant talents who created it. We are elated to bring this sadly-neglected classic back for true believers to add to their collection and (maybe more importantly) to a whole new generation to discover for the first time.
