Formed in 1989, Unlord are widely considered among the Netherlands’ very first black metal bands, if not THE first. Although they never publicly released any demos, their three albums for the sorely missed Displeased Records – 1997’s Schwarzwald, 2000’s Gladiator, and 2002’s Lord of Beneath – stand as a nigh-untouchable trio of freezing-fire black metal incarnate. Unlord’s proud ‘n’ pure synthesis of bazooka-blown speed and violently melodic riffing reeks of late ‘90s nostalgia but also sounds remarkably fresh today, nearly 20 years after their untimely breakup. In that black metal-rich year of 1997 did Unlord unleash their debut album, Schwarzwald. Adorned with appropriately fiery cover art, Schwarzwald very much sounded – and looked – like its era, and was all the better for it. And yet, crucially, Unlord here offer a variety of songcraft across the 13-track album whilst keeping the focus on cryogenically-cold violence. Winter Eternal is the sole work of one Soulreaper, formed as a means to express his darkest side - indeed, a place where winter reigns eternal. It all started in 2002 in Athens, Greece where, under the name Unveiled Nightsky, the seeds for the Winter that was yet to come where planted. Nine years later, in 2011, Winter Eternal were officially formed, and a year later, the first demo was released. The band's first full-length, simply self-titled, originally saw release in 2013 as a limited cassette and, three years later, finally as a CD version. Eternal winter was raging throughout Soulreaper's long journey. On guitar was John Paul Soars, also fresh from leaving Malevolent Creation following In Cold Blood but also known for Raped Ape and Paingod.

But how DECEASED manage to thread everything together so seamlessly speaks to the strength of their songwriting - always recognizable, but never resting on past laurels. Formed in 1982 and disbanding in 1999, ARMOURED ANGEL were Australia's very first extreme metal band – and for many years, one of its only ones. However, during the band’s earliest days, they were pure ‘n’ true heavy metal. Years before they’d perfect their patient and pulsing (and oft-hypnotic ) songcraft – which began with 1989’s Wings of Death demo, which more importantly featured the band’s classic power-trio lineup of lone founder Lucy and brothers Joel and Matt Green – in 1985, a four-piece ARMOURED ANGEL delivered a rough ‘n’ rowdy demo tape titled Baptism in Blood. While many of the band's primary influences have been Swedish - Entombed, Carnage, and Dismember - over the past decade, the quartet have finessed that style of death metal into one that feels classic rather than simply "old." Call it intrinsically understanding what makes death metal DEATH METAL or simply possessing the songwriting nous to add to such a hallowed canon rather than merely milking, but SKELETHAL have proven to be contenders to the throne. First full-length evidence was 2017's Of the Depths..., followed by 2020's Unveiling the Threshold, which saw a lineup change and bold steps beyond Swedeath (and both released by HELLS HEADBANGERS), and now arrives LP#3 to all but assure that ascent to the throne.Tellingly titled Within Corrosive Continuums, SKELETHAL's third album equally encapsulates their past and builds upon it in noble ways. While it's predecessor saw a slight uptick in clarity, here do SKELETHAL carry forward that clarity with a conspicuous dirtying-up of tone. The production's as powerful as ever, so it could be argued that that rediscovered grit & grime come more in the band's execution - or, more accurately, the songwriting itself. Within Corrosive Continuums immediately sounds like the same band who unleashed those prior two (celebrated) LPs, but SKELETHAL flex a bit differently here, opening up a number of (still-death metal) influences and transforming them into riffs and rhythms that ever so slightly more adventurous, all without (crucially) losing their characteristic directness. As such, the bulk of these largely-five-minute-long songs feel twice as fast, so feverish is the band's intensity, but dread-draped hooks and CRUSHING heaviness still rule the day. Put another way, SKELETHAL take on textures that are more personal and somber, but keep the expression resolutely death metal. Now, nearly a decade after that momentous debut album, GOAT SEMEN return with a comparatively quick-hitting EP in Fuck Christ. Much like its unapologetic & unadorned title, the Peruvian devils waste no time, kicking in immediately with a swirlingly sulfurous maelstrom of classic GOAT SEMEN proportions. For a record that comprises five stout songs in 19 electric minutes, Fuck Christ feels simultaneously longer and quicker than that runtime suggests, so respectively satisfying and urgent is that hammering barbarity. Naturally, it wouldn't be GOAT SEMEN if everything wasn't attacking from every angle all at once, the feeling of imminent implosion lurking around every dark 'n' diseased corner; compared to Ego Svm Satana, Fuck Christ exacerbates that mania to an almost overwhelming degree even when the intensity dips down to a doomed trudge. BLOOD FEAST has been transformed yet again. Yet, this time out, the boundaries are expanded. HELLS HEADBANGERS is proud to present ROTTEN UK's highly anticipated second album, Age of Chaos.When ROTTEN UK made their long-awaited full-length debut, That Is Not Dead, in 2016, it seemed like quite the surprise coming from HELLS HEADBANGERS. Although pure punk rock is a rarity the label, the form ROTTEN UK played on that celebrated debut - and proceeded to uniquely twist to their own design, with power and personality, across its 14 anthemic tracks - is actually a variety that inspired many early speed metal and thrash bands: commonly known as UK82, this subgenre was indeed a strain of early '80s UK punk that synthesized the anthemic Oi! style before it with the nascent harder/faster style pioneered by the likes of Discharge, The Exploited, and GBH. But UK82 wasn't the only thing lurking in ROTTEN UK's cauldron; other stated influences included early Finnish legends like Kaaos and Riistetyt as well as England's Disorder and Broken Bones. Of course, trainspotters will know frontman James von Sinn from Japanese-style metalpunks Blüdwülf.And, in many ways, von Sinn carries on that cult band's too-long-dormant legacy with ROTTEN UK's back-from-the-dead second album, Age of Chaos. Although some eight years separate the two albums, Age of Chaos carries forward the sound of its predecessor with renewed vigor and a wider 'n' wilder palette. Not for nothing does the 46-minute album comprise a full 15 songs: exhibiting both staggering variety and finely honed focus, ROTTEN UK's second full-length sweeps across throttling metalpunk, hammering anarcho-punk, and even early goth, as it evolved from punk and into deathrock, with effortless aplomb. Thus, one will find influences from the aforementioned Broken Bones but also Amebix, Rudimentary Peni, and even Hellhammer, all rendered in ROTTEN UK's engaging 'n' enigmatic style. The Exploited play a prominent influence, too, both their paradigmatic thrashing style as well as their goth-tinged classic Horror Epics; other early goth touchstones here include UK Decay, Screaming Dead, and the early works of Christian Death and T.S.O.L. But even with this spidery dynamics integrated, ROTTEN UK's second album surges with a heaviness only hinted at earlier, with the crush coming from a firm UKHC foundation of early Sacrilege, English Dogs, Onslaught, Warfare, and especially later Anti-Cimex. And while the songwriting is superlative, the production of Age of Chaos is both authentically vintage and remarkably clear & cutting, courtesy of recording at Vanik's Mercinary Studios. HELLS HEADBANGERS is proud to reissue In the Name of Gore, the classic split album between HEMDALE and EXHUMED, on CD and vinyl LP format.Released in 1996, during an era where death metal was supposedly “dead,” In the Name of Gore brought together two of that era’s sickest bands, HEMDALE and EXHUMED, for a 24-track / 53-minute orgy of viscera and depravity. At the time, HEMDALE were well on their way to being one of the cultest bands in the metal underground: gory, gnarly, and utterly uncompromising, it was perhaps fate – or, rather, their recordings being too foul & filthy – that they only ever released EPs and splits during their original run in the 1990s (and even when they re-formed in 2013). However, their contribution to In the Name of Gore was an all-too-generous 13 tracks, still HEMDALE’s longest recorded entry anywhere – and it still stands tall as some of the sickest (and nearly blackened) goregrind around, ignorant and untouchable in its primitive grind & gallop schematic. Back then, EXHUMED were grade-A early-Carcass worship, still a couple years away from their classic Gore Metal debut album. HELLS HEADBANGERS is proud to present FUNERAL STORM's highly anticipated second album, Chthonic Invocations.It was but 2019 when FUNERAL STORM made their grand entrance onto the international metal stage with their acclaimed debut album, Arcane Mysteries, courtesy of HELLS HEADBANGERS. While their history goes back to 2001, activities didn't begin in earnest until 2012, and hard graft became their watchword. But it was Arcane Mysteries that majestically consolidated all of FUNERAL STORM's considerable promise into one grand statement of classic Greek black metal in an authentically early '90s style. It certainly didn't hurt that that debut album featured Varathron founder Necroabyssious on vocals. Likewise appropriately titled, Chthonic Invocations further explores the steadfast theme of the Cthulhu mythos. More specifically, FUNERAL STORM's second album in general focuses on death, in every form, for Arcania and Wampyrion were totally isolated during the lockdown and Necroabyssious was heavily infected with Covid-19 to a point where the band didn't know what would happen. However, after he was healed, Necroabyssious delivered an exceptionally aggressive performance, suiting to his bandmates' more surging yet more mystical music. Truly, Chthonic Invocations sounds like FUNERAL STORM 666%, and harkens even further into the ancient past: to say that the album could've been released in 1993 on Unisound is an understatement to end all understatements.
