New single by legendary Brazilian singer DI MELO, 40 years after his classic self-titled Samba-Soul LP. Performed and produced by French brilliant combo COTONETE, this single and collaboration will be followed by a full album early 2019.
Florian Pelissier speaks about the project: “On tour in Brazil with Cotonete, we had a few days off in Sao Paulo and I really hoped to make a collaboration with an important artist or band from the Brazilian funk scene. We had thought of Marcos Valle, Meta Meta or Ed Motta... but Rafaela Prestes our Brazilian "sound ingineer/genious" told me: "I worked for the return of Di Melo in Rio 2 years ago. He rocks, he’s adorable and he lives in Sao Paulo, here’s his number, he would be perfect for Cotonete."
No sooner said than done. I'm a huge fan of Di Melo and had already tried to contact him for Cotonete 6 years ago. The next day, on a Sunday, he arrives at our house with Jo, his wife, and Gabi, his daughter. He takes the guitar in front of us in the kitchen, and gives us a private show of 3 hours… we cried the tears of joy.
He had 400 original songs never recorded, a gold mine. On the same night, we started working the arrangements for 2 days, followed by a rehearsal and two small gigs in Sao Paulo. Immediately after, we recorded in the magical Epsilon B studio. All with the participation of Gabi, his 10-year-old daughter, and future star.
This album is the summary of this moment, of these 5 days of madness spent together between “the best band in the world” and the legend Roberto Di Melo… Simple, beautiful, Brazilian-French, human music…”

For number 83 in the Brazil 45 series, we pulled out a real treat. It features two tracks from Roberto De Melo Santos. Born in 1949 in Recife (Brazil), and despite a small discography, he is considered among the true icons of Brazilian soul music under his artist alias, Di Melo.

His self-titled debut album from 1975 has long been collectible for its irresistible Brazilian-funk sound, pleasing the Brazilian, B-Boy breaks, funk collectors, and sample hunters alike. With original copies for the album now fetching crazy sums, we felt these tracks needed another moment in the sun for all to enjoy.

For this release we selected two of our favourite cuts from this cult album, ‘Kilariô' and ‘Pernalonga'. Coincidentally these two gems were released on Odeon Records in 1975 as a rare promo campacto (a Brazilian 7", which plays at 33rpm). 'Kilariô' is a pure Brazilian-soul classic. All the right elements gel together, whilst Di Melo works his relaxed vocal magic over the top. ‘Pernalonga', with its catchy guitar and horns intro, loose break-beat drum, has the feel-good factor which some may recognize as one of the samples behind N.A.S.A featuring David Byrne, & Chali 2na's 'The People Tree' from 2009.

Di Melo is still recording to this day, releasing an album with Cotonete on Favorite Recordings in 2019 - a true don.

Di Melo's Debut Album Was Originally Released In 1975 And It's A Fusion Of Genuinely Brazilian Rhythms With Funk, Soul And The Right Amount Of Psychedelia. Di Melo Is One Of The Main Brazilian Soul Music Artists, Seen By Many As Talented And Musically Creative As His Peers Jorge Ben And Tim Maia.Di Melo Went Missing In Action From 1976 To 1997, The Year His Song "A Vida Em Seus Métodos Diz Calma" Was On The Collection "Blue Brazil" From Blue Note Record Label. The Word On The Streets Was That He Was Dead Until 2011, When The Documentary Called "Di Melo, O Imorrível" (Di Melo, The Immortal) Was Released. In This 2021 Edition The Album Contains The Original 1975 Insert With Lyrics Plus Photos From Personal Family Archives And For The First Time The Full Credits With All The Name Of Every Single Musician Who Took Part, Among Them, Hermeto Pascoal.The Young Man Of 25 Coming From The Outskirts Of Pernambuco Was At The Peak Of His Success. Psychedelic Drugs And Cinema References Were Blowing His Mind Away When He Realised That He Was Being Conned By Music Industry Rats. His Songs Were At The Hit Parade On The Radio And His Music Had Been Recorded By Some Of The Biggest Names In Brazil, But What He Was Being Paid For Made No Justice To That. People Say That After Watching The Movie "Blow Up" By Antonioni, Di Melo Himself Beat The S*** Out Of The Publisher Who Paid Him Less Than 10 Dollars For His Rights For The Past Three Months.Such Events, Ran By The Same Strong Personality That Initially Opened Doors, Made Di Melo Ostracized By The Ungrateful Brazilian Music Industry. Perhaps That's What It Took To Make Such A Mythical Album.
