Akae Beka's inimitable style of rich, deep, multi-layered songwriting, uncompromising devotion to RasTafari and soulful healing melodies developed over decades performing with St. Croix based band Midnite and countless recordings. At the point of his untimely passing in 2019, he had released over 70LP's. He is without a doubt one of the most prolific reggae artists ever known.
The stellar production trinity that is Zion I Kings have been involved collectively and individually in creating some of the most highly regarded contributions to the vast Akae Beka catalogue. Ride Tru, originally released digitally and on CD in 2014, stood every chance disappearing into the all eclipsing shadow of the LP released by them earlier that year, Beauty for Ashes, which had been named by iTunes as the reggae album of the year. A monumental achievement for undiluted, uncompromising RasTafari roots reggae music this side of the millennium. So needless to say, the bar was high and Vaughn Benjamin and Zion I Kings must have known that, as they managed to raise it higher again.

This offers the listener not only the chance to enjoy this LP in an analogue form, but also the chance to hold the artwork as a 12" square masterpiece, created by the hands of Ras Marcus, the artist who gave the powerful visual presence that became synonymous to much of the I Grade / Akae Beka works over the years.

Angels Sing is a special edition Akae Beka showcase ep featuring vocal and lyrical contributions from four top tier reggae talents including 2023 Grammy winner Kabaka Pyramid, Micah Shemaiah, Jah9, and ex-Black Uhuru Michael Rose. Zion High Productions’ producer JAH David adds four dub mixes for a complete roots and culture reggae showcase experience.

World renowned chanter and lyricist Vaughn Benjamin is perhaps best known for his many years as the charismatic frontman of Midnite, but his later years as Akae Beka ushered in an era when his work with the Zion I Kings producers collective explored new musical horizons. Angels Sing pushes these boundaries in inspired melodic and harmonic directions again by pairing Vaughn Benjamin’s distinctive and timeless vocals with four instantly recognizable reggae voices.

The Zion I Kings are joined on Angels Sing by an array of talented musicians including drums (Roberto Sanchez, Craig Taylor, and Jonathan “Rankine Jedd” Rankine), keyboards (Andrew “Drew Keys” Stoch), trombone (Okiel Mcintyre, Andrew “Drew Keys” Stoch), saxophone (Donald “Jah Bless” Toney), trumpet (Okiel Mcintyre), flute (Zoe Brown), and kette (Andrew “Bassie” Campbell). Background vocals are by Roberto Sanchez and Ruel Klyve Moncrieffe.

Ato K.D. Robert’s striking and colorful cover art depicts the assembled reggae angels gathered around the rainbow circle throne of H.I.M. Emperor Haile Selassie I.

Vaughn Benjamin, the voice of Midnite and Akae Beka, was one of the best and most prolific reggae vocalists of the modern era. He was a scholar, poet, teacher, and solver of mysteries. A voracious reader, he was incredibly creative - constantly writing poems and songs. Those close to him advise that he had a photographic memory, which helps explain the broad field of topics he discussed with precise detail in his work. He released over 70 albums in a 20-year period.

Living Testament is the final album Vaughn Benjamin recorded before he transitioned in November of 2019. In late October of 2019, he travelled to Grass Valley, California, recording this 11-track album at Ras Biblical’s studio, Trinity Farm, over a period of 2 days. The producers gathered 11 masterful musicians on these tracks, including Manuel “Go A Chant” Guerra, Denfield “Ras Pulse” Potter, Walker Pillow, Scott Lynwood Davis, Befekadu Assefa and Tuff Lion. Together, these musicians weaved together a powerful family of songs that that tell a timeless and truly unique story, a masterpiece of roots reggae.

Living Testament includes the single ‘Who Will Go For Us’ which was released on January 6th 2024 with a video filmed on location in Ethiopia. In the coming weeks, we’ll be speaking with Go A Chant and Biblical, who were present for the creation of this album. We’ll learn about these recording sessions and what happened behind the scenes.
