Picking up where the band left off with their critically acclaimed Love in Shadow, the trio of Aaron Turner (ISIS, Old Man Gloom), Brian Cook (Russian Circles), and Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists) push further into the polarity of their sound with long- form composition and free-form exploration. Meticulously detailed and complex one moment, rudimentary and repetitive the next, and completely untethered and unscripted at seemingly random-May You Be Held is an album that fluctuates between extreme discipline and control and an almost feral energy. "As an artist in this time of significant upheaval, society seemingly having reached the end of its current iteration, it's of critical importance to absorb and interpret this process of dissolution - and of the transformation that hopefully follows it" says Turner, "While I don't believe we're on the brink of collective destruction precisely now, this is clearly a pivotal stage in the story of humankind - and there is something that feels right about this music at this exact and very uncertain moment." SUMAC's work has always been about transition between different states of being, and it's a fundamental aspect of May You Be Held's larger themes. Musically, it's continual unification and divergence-and the uncertainty in that cycle. In that uncertainty there is also hope, frustration, madness, and desire for connection. All this too is part of this moment in our history-everything happening at once, the simultaneous emergence of humanity's best and worst characteristics. Lyrically, May You Be Held follows the humanistic themes explored on Love in Shadow, partially informed by Turner's navigation of fatherhood and family life. Here, Turner's bellows and howls seem less threatening than wounded, primal, and mammalian. On guitar, his subversion of melody and penchant for noise seems less like aural punishment and more like an open horizon for frequencies and timbre. In a traditional metal context, drummer Nick Yacyshyn's dexterous beats, exhilarating fills, and creative...

SUMAC - guitarist and vocalist Aaron Turner (Old Man Gloom, Mamiffer,
ISIS), drummer Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists, Erosion), and bassist Brian Cook
(Russian Circles, Botch) - delivers their third full length album, Love in
Shadow, a brutalizing dive into love and all its raw emotions. The album
was recorded live in a single room at Robert Lang Studios (Nirvana, Foo
Fighters) in Washington by Kurt Ballou (Converge), who later mixed the
album at his own studio GodCity.
The album ?ows with the continued momentum from their acclaimed
collaborative release with with legendary Japanese artist Keiji Haino
(Fushitsusha, Painkiller) earlier this year American Dollar Bill - Keep
Facing Sideways, You’re Too Hideous To Look At Face On, incorporating
more freeform abstraction into their raw, bombastic, and jagged sound. The
intense exploration of tension and chaos is mirrored in Turner’s striking
visual art for the album, where strands of frayed ink and hints of color
coalesce into a swamp-like form both elaborately disorienting and minutely
structured in its packaging.
Each member of SUMAC has remained prolifc within their own right, with
Turner continuing to release albums with a myriad of projects and through
his own imprint SIGE, Yacyshyn recently releasing new music with Baptists
as well as scoring a horror flm soundtrack, and Cook consistently touring
the world, sharing the stage with bands like Mastodon, Chelsea Wolfe, and
many more.
Love can be ugly. But at its core, it’s alive, unpredictable, and volatile. On
Love In Shadow, SUMAC captures that passion in the most primal and
unfettered manner possible.

Following the release of their acclaimed album What One Becomes earlier this year, Sumac will be releasing Before You I Appear, a limited 12" of What One Becomes remixes featuring tracks reconfigured by the likes of Samuel Kerridge, Bleed Turquoise (aka James Ginzburg of Emptyset), Kevin Drumm and Japan’s Endon. The results range from impossibly dense and perpetually ascending psych-noise blowouts, to subdued passages of subtly curdled drones punctuated by disembodied vocal excretions.

In composing music, Sumac opts for a process of simultaneous construction and dismantlement. Long-form rock based structures are distended to the point of erosion, reiterated in continually alternating sequences, and plied with extra-musical implements of chaos and tonal abstraction. Through the practice of psychophysical exertion and sensorial disorientation the music becomes a tangible projection of the players underlying emotions and spirit.

Though stylistically differentiated from the source material, all four tracks of Before You I Appear posses a parallel predilection for combining combustable atmospherics and emotionally penetrative musical maneuvers.

On The Healer, the new full length from the Northwest-based trio of guitarist and vocalist Aaron Turner (ISIS, Old Man Gloom) bassist Brian Cook (Russian Circles, Botch) and drummer Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists) the group deepens its multi-faceted exploration into the parallel experiences of creation and destruction. Over the course of 4 tracks in 76 minutes, SUMAC present a sequence of shifting movements which undergo a constant process of expansion, contraction, corruption and regrowth. This musical methodology reflects the thematic nature of the record - narratives of experiential wounding as gateways to empowerment and evolution, both individual and collective. The group"s interpolation of melody, drone, improvisation, and complex riffing becomes a transmogrifying act embodying the depth of human experience. In its highest aspiration it mirrors our ability to endure mortal and spiritual challenges, through which we may emerge with an increased capacity for understanding, empathy, love of self and others. Dismal though the subterranean pits of The Healer may at first appear, from them can be felt the unwavering determination to embrace life, acknowledge interdependence, and honor the gift of existence.
