Julian’s Treatment were formed in late 1960s London, at the tail-end of the psychedelic era, which morphed into the early progressive rock scene. Band leader Julian Jay Savarin, of French/Mayan descent, left Dominica in the early 60s to study law in the UK. His fascination with space and aviation led him to join the R.A.F. before immersing himself in London’s exciting underground music scene. The cosmically enhanced debut (double concept) album by Julian’s Treatment, titled: A Time Before This, was released in 1970 and has gone on to be a cult classic of the era. As Julian turned his talents toward becoming a prolific Science Fiction writer, Julian’s Treatment stepped away from the live arena. As result they became a studio band with new members, including the enigmatic (former Catapilla) vocalist ‘Lady Jo Meek’. A second album was recorded with this new line-up, as a companion to Julian’s first book: Waiters On The Dance, being published in 1972. The album, of the same name was released in early 1973. Since then, Julian went on to have an impressive volume of acclaimed books published in his name, though nothing has been heard of him musically. Little did we all know that a follow-up album to Waiters On the Dance had been recorded in 1975 but, for whatever reason, it has never seen the light of day, until now! Beyond The Outer Mirr is, undoubtedly a holy grail from the golden era of early progressive rock. Vocalist, Lady Jo Meek, puts in an incredible performance which will leave listeners stunned. 1. Asgard were a 3-piece, proto-progressive rock band from Coventry, UK. They were initially influenced by early Pink Floyd and The Velvet Underground, before becoming more experimental in their own right. They soon caught the attention of legendary DJ and general tastemaker; John Peel, who had planned to sign them to his Dandelion Records, before financial problems signalled the demise of said label. In early 1970, they recorded these three tracks on a one-sided 12” acetate. They are the only recordings by the band still known to still exist. The sole surviving acetate in question, had been sitting in the bass player’s garage since the 70s and was not in the best of shape; sections of the lacquer had actually flaked off and had to be meticulously glued back on. Formed in the East End of London back in the early 70s, Incredible Hog were a popular band in the underground rock scene, playing regularly at all the legendary venues of the time. Their infectious brand of ‘Hog Rock’ became popular with record collectors, long after their initial demise, making Volume 1 a valuable artefact from the golden days of British Hard Rock. Top original copies these days cost in the region of 4-500 GBP. Rise Above Relics originally released an expanded edition of the album back in 2011, which has long since sold out. With the sad passing of original guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Ken Gordon a couple years ago, we thought it fitting to re-release the album in its original format, as single album with the original UK artwork. 1. There are certain ideas in life that seem great in principle, though having the time, dedication and perseverance to bring them to fruition, often renders them left well alone_. If we, at Rise Above Relics, had subscribed to that way of thinking, then this Incredible compilation of brain-mincing, hard n heavy sounds from the golden-era (late 60s/early 70s) of sub-underground British rock, would simply not exist. Our mission was to pull together the heaviest, nastiest sounding unreleased recordings by the most obscure UK bands we could track down, after seeing their names listed in the back-pages of 1970s music weeklies, old flyers, posters, fanzines, thanks lists, wherever. With often just a name to go on, we spent hundreds of hours (often fruitlessly) trying to track down likely candidates.Of course, finding the bands was often only the start, as to get a useable track relied upon a kindly band member trusting their unique artefacts to a crazy record label they barely knew. Even after this, many of the acetates required microscopic surgery to fix an annoying skip, and all the reel-to-reel tapes used required careful baking to avert the dreaded 'sticky-shed syndrome'. Still, we think the results speak for themselves: 'Yeah Man, It's Bloody Heavy' is simply the coolest, most unique and uncompromising collection of heavy UK nuggets ever to be released. But we're not done yet, as this is just the first volume of a major new series. And remember, sons and daughters of the mighty Sabbath: always keep it BLOODY HEAVY!!
