Melbourne's Cool Sounds release new album Like That, their first for Chapter Music. Like That is a transformative album. Cool Sounds' usual jangle-pop sparkle has been supercharged by a disco-glam stomp, making for their most immediate, irresistible record yet. Like That combines wry, acerbic lyrics with bright, unstoppable pop-funk, finding a sweet spot between Ian Dury & the Blockheads, Hot Chip and 80s 12" mixes by Francois K. Cool Sounds polymath Dainis Lacey also steps out from behind a band facade on Like That. He plays almost everything on the record, with a little help from friends including multi-instrumentalist Dylan Young, saxophonist Pierce Morton and German-born vocalist Ambrin Hasnain (with whom Dainis also plays in Partner Look, signed to US label Trouble In Mind).Past albums have moved deftly through indie-rock, slick 80s pop and wistful alt-country, with a lightness of touch that disguises Lacey's sardonic, perceptive songwriting. 2019's Cactus Country was nominated for an Australian Independent Record Label Award, and they have been featured in the Guardian, Line Of Best Fit, NME and elsewhere. On stage the project can swell up to six people. Cool Sounds have toured Europe twice and head to US in early 2023.For Fans of: Franz Ferdinand, Ian Dury & the Blockheads, "funk-striped indie pop, balancing comfort and cool" - Raven Sings the Blues

After the success of their second album Activity, Sydney wonky house trio Holy Balm return with a remix EP, featuring Activity tracks reworked by Moon B, András and Zanzibar Chanel. Melbourne house monsters Zanzibar Chanel contribute possibly their recorded swan-song, with a squelching, grunting, irresistible take on Circumstance. US boogie funk magician Moon B, known for releases on Peoples Potential Unlimited and 1080P, draws out the brittle dreaminess of All Night Long. The album's undeniable single Fashion is disassembled not once but twice by Melbourne celeb András, whose 2016 releases under the names House Of Dad and Wilson/Tanner have populated endless DJ best of lists. András also tackles Hot Cold, taking it even further into club minimalism.

"A powder keg of bangers primed to shake the rat race to its core" - The Guardian Australia (Best of 2023) "Simultaneously chaotic and precise, no matter whether the palette is fierce rap, punk energy or slinking beats." - Rolling Stone Australia (Best of 2023)London/Melbourne rap duo Teether & Kuya Neil release their long-awaited debut album YEARN IV.YEARN IV captures the brooding and vivid world of two musical outsiders. Raised by the internet, the pair find their voice amid a sea of clashing cultural experiences and sonic histories, finding solace in the isolation of contemporary urban Australia.Recorded in Melbourne and completed in London, the album captures the duo's hyper local yet globally influenced rap sound at its core. Kuya Neil's drum heavy production collides with Teether's surreal and immersive storytelling, blending thrash metal and club music aesthetics with the echoes of the early internet.Lead single `ZOO' plays with the silent throes of cultural diversity over a paranoid trap instrumental, 'BLUSH' is a blissed out digital love letter wuth shimmering autotuned hooks and rave inspired breaks. `CHANEL' (featuring Indigenous Australian songwriter Alice Skye) is a guitar driven lament for Australia's myopic cultural landscape, fading out with "I'll never reach my full potential here".Teether & Kuya Neil released their first mixtape GLYPH via Chapter in 2021, receiving airplay from NTS, Dublab and Australian radio, plus writeups via Brooklyn Vegan and NME. Four tracks from `GLYPH' were featured in the iconic Australian Netflix series 'Heartbreak High' the following year.2023 mixtape STRESSOR charted in the Australian Independent Top 10 and made it into end of year best of lists for The Guardian, Rolling Stone and NME Australia. The mixtape was nominated for Best Hip Hop Album at the 2024 Australian Independent Music Awards and named Album of the Week by 3RRR and fBI Radio.Teether & Kuya Neil have performed around Australia and New Zealand. - First reissue of 1985 eccentric dance-pop opus, on white-in-red vinyl -- Features a who's who of Australian post-punk, including members of Essendon Airport, Whirlywirld, Equal Local, I'm Talking, Laughing Hands and more -- For fans of: Talking Heads, Arthur Russell, New Order -// In 1985, Australian musical iconoclast David Chesworth joined forces with friends Philip Jackson and Warwick Bone to form Whadya Want. Their sole album Skippy Knows is a quintessential mid 80s artefact, melding elements of post-punk, art pop and club-facing dance music. Now a coveted collectors item, at first it seemed to disappear almost without trace.David's background in celebrated Melbourne group Essendon Airport had already seen him explore funk and hypnotic rhythm on their 1981 album Palimpsest (since reissued by Chapter alongside David's early solo albums). Philip also created compelling electronic post-punk in bands Equal Local and Whirlywirld, while Warwick was a mysterious studio maverick. The songs came from a performance David gave in 1983 at the Paris Autumn Festival, whose Australian focus that year saw a host of antipodean artists invited to perform internationally for the first time. David wrote a suite of songs commenting on the archetypes and stereotypes of Australian culture, then going through a brief vogue with the success of Men At Work, Bowie's "Let's Dance" video and Crocodile Dundee. David performed to backing tapes and slide projections showing clichéd images of Australia - kangaroos, platypuses, pristine beaches - with cryptic messages superimposed. Back in Melbourne, David decided to document this project with help from Philip and Warwick, who had access to a high-tech studio featuring a Fairlight CMI and the then-new Yamaha DX7. They recorded late at night and roped in friends such as ex-Essendon Airport pals Robert Goodge and Ian Cox (both playing in I'm Talking by this point), Mick Hauser (Equal Local), Michael Sheridan (Max Q), Paul Schütze (Laughing Hands) and Bill McDonald (Paul...

Esther Edquist is Melbourne artist Sweet Whirl. She is also one of the best songwriters you have heard in a very long time. How Much Works is her debut album proper, after a handful of releases acclaimed by the likes of Gorilla Vs Bear, The Guardian and Clash Magazine. How Much Works arrives fully formed, a classic ten song album from an artist with both a command of history and a drive for new expression. The album is a beautifully crafted triumph over bleak moments. It's the love-addled confessions of a seasoned party girl, romantic yet sardonic, a troubadour who sings of the heart with a knowing sense of the timeless victory of song. Esther dissects experiences with wit and depth, emerging as a powerful, indomitable voice.Musically and lyrically, How Much Works draws on wells as deep as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Jean-Paul Sartre and Sheryl Crow. It distils personal, reflexive narratives into something universal and wondrous. Esther plays almost everything on the album, with guitar and therevox from engineer Casey Hartnett (Sui Zhen, Sleep Decade) and drums from Monty Hartnett (Dreamin Wild, Sleep Decade). Fellow Chapter Music recording artist Gregor contributes backing vocals to Make That Up For Me and Conga Line.Esther has previously served in Melbourne duo Superstar, who released two delay-drenched albums during the mid 10s. She has also been a member of Scott & Charlene's Wedding.

Legendary Australian punk band Little Ugly Girls formed in Hobart, Tasmania in the very early 90s, but have never released a record until 2018. This self-titled set is officially their debut album, and features recordings spanning more than 20 years, including new sessions to finish off songs first tracked in the late 90s, which were left stranded on a damaged hard drive for two decades. The band formed around fiery vocalist Linda Johnston, whose high-kicking stage antics make her one of Australia's most electrifying frontpeople, alongside her guitar demon brother Dannie "Bean" Johnston and drummer Brent "Sloth" Punshon. After moving to Melbourne in the mid 90s, the band settled on their classic lineup with the addition of rock-solid bassist Mindy Mapp (previously of another cult 90s band, Brisbane's much-loved Fur).Little Ugly Girls played with the likes of Bikini Kill (after Sloth organised for them to make a detour to Hobart on their first Australian tour), Fugazi, and once memorably headlined over the White Stripes in Melbourne. But their only recordings released to date include a handful of 90s cassettes (some of them now archived at the Bandcamp page of Hobart label Goulburn Street Records) and one three track CD-R.Now nearly 30 years since they formed, the debut album by Little Ugly Girls shows them at their towering best - fierce and inspiring, with Linda's scarifying lyrics and impassioned delivery set to a huge wall of taut punk noise. It has been a long time coming, but it's as good as you could have dreamed.

Revered Sydney songwriter Laura Jean returns with new album Amateurs, her first record since the much-celebrated Devotion in 2018. Amateurs is a stunning, string-laden album, set at a mystical midway point between the deep synth-pop of Devotion and the folkier sounds of Laura's earlier work. The album features backing vocals from Aldous Harding and Marlon Williams on three songs (Teenager Again, Amateurs and Folk Festival). Laura worked with producer Tim Bruniges around Sydney's long 2020-2021 lockdowns. Erkki Veltheim (Gurrumul, Cat Power) arranged gorgeous strings for the album, which were recorded in Melbourne by Devotion producer John Lee. Amateurs is an album about anti-art and anti-intellectual culture in Australia (but applies equally to other parts of the world). It sees Laura questioning her role as a songwriter and examining the reality of her choices to prioritise art over other parts of her life. It is also a warmhearted, humorous and sonically breathtaking album. "Amateurs means to do something for love, not money, and somehow it's become a dirty word, shorthand for a failure," says Laura. "These songs arise from my acceptance that I will always be an `amateur'." 2018 album Devotion had superlative reviews from Pitchfork, Gorilla Vs Bear and elsewhere, and made it into end of year lists for Spin, Idolator, Apple Music and more. Laura also acquired some high-profile fans such as Lorde and actor Brie Larson. She did two UK/Europe tours in 2018-19 with Courtney Barnett and Aldous Harding. Laura has twice been shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize and has recorded with Jenny Hval as well as Aussie icons Paul Kelly, The Drones, and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. "Maybe the sharpest communication of the spooky, all-consuming nature of feminine love" - Lorde

Originally Released On Cd In 2012, Chapter's Landmark Compilation Of 70s Gay Musical Pioneers Gets A Vinyl Release For The First Time Ever - And On Limited Baby Pink Vinyl To Boot! Strong Love Explores The First Wave Of Openly Gay Songwriting, Emerging After New York's Stonewall Riots Kickstarted The Modern Gay Rights Movement In 1969. It Took Just A Few Years For The Defiant Chanting And Interlocked Arms Of Early 70s Pride Marches To Reverberate Onto Record, And Strong Love Begins With The Earliest Known Example, 1972's A Gay Song By London Hippie Collective Everyone Involved. Across 15 Tracks, The Compilation Takes In Disarmingly Personal Folk, Uplifting Soul, Outsider Country And Dark Synth-Rock. But Tellingly, None Of Its Songs Could Be Considered Well-Known. New York's Steven Grossman Released The First Major Label Album By An Openly Gay Artist In 1974, And Tom Robinson Hit The Uk Top 20 With The Fiery Glad To Be Gay In 1978, But These Are The Exceptions. The Coy Ambivalence Of Lou Reed And David Bowie Was About As Sexually Adventurous As The 1970s Music Industry Got, And Most Strong Love Artists Released Their Own Self-Funded Recordings In Very Limited Numbers.Unlike Their Lesbian Counterparts, Who Joined Forces To Create Long-Lasting Record Labels, Strong Distribution Networks And Considerable Sales Figures, Gay Male Musicians In The 1970s Existed Largely In Solitary Bubbles. Which Doesn't Mean They Didn't Carve Out Niches Of Their Own. Chris Robison Played With The New York Dolls And Elephant's Memory, While La Glamseducer Smokey Saw Members Of The Stooges And Quiet Riot Pass Through His Backing Band. Steven Grossman Was Covered By Twiggy And Scrumbly & Martin Are Infamous For Their Work With San Francisco Drag Hippies The Cockettes. Strong Love Illustrate The Vision, Talent And Raw Courage That Drove 1970s Songwriters To Sacrifice Popular Careers For The Sake Of Honesty And Selfexpression. Compiled By Chapter Music's Guy Blackman, With An Evocative Introduction From Drummer Richard Dworkin (Who Pl...

- Reissue of 1983 private folk album by revered Connecticut duo - Loved by the likes of Bill Callahan, Mark Kozelek and Devendra Banhart //The extraordinary creative partnership of New Haven, CT duo Kath Bloom and Loren Connors has haunted folk fans since the early 80s. Kath taught herself guitar during shifts as a janitor at a New Haven cemetery, while Loren's free-form style had been developing since the late 60s. Between 1981 and 1984, the duo recorded six studio albums, mostly self-released intiny quantities. Early on, their music mixed folk and blues traditionals with a handful of Kath's vulnerable, moving originals. By the later albums the songs were all Kath's - her fragile voice and subdued finger-picking set against Loren'sabstract but always supportive playing. Together the duo created a sound almost impossibly emotional and haunting.Sand In My Shoe emerged in 1983 as the first release on Loren's new label St. Joan, in an edition of 200-300 copies with handmade sleeves. Two more albums followed before the prodigious duo parted ways in 1984. Kath did not release anything again until a 1993 solo cassette, but thendeveloped a devoted cult following through the pivotal use of her song Come Here in Richard Linklater's 1995 film Before Sunrise. Kath has since released three solo albums on Chapter Music, as well as the tribute album Loving Takes This Course, featuring the likes of Bill Callahan, Mark Kozelek, Devendra Banhart and Josephine Foster. Loren also retreated from music for a period until re-emerging in the late 1980s. He is now recognised as a pioneering guitar explorer, and has workedwith Thurston Moore, Keiji Haino and Jim O'Rourke. After reissuing Kath & Loren's four studio albums on CD in the late 2000s, Chapter has now embarked on the first ever vinyl reissues for these remarkable records. Restless Faithful Desperate (1984) was reissued in 2018, while Moonlight(1984) will be released alongside Sand In My Shoe in October 2019. Sand In My Shoe includes five digital-only bonus trac...

Self-titled debut album by Melbourne, Australia wobbly pop foursome School Damage. Formed by Carolyn Hawkins (Chook Race) and Jake Robertson (Ausmuteants, Hierophants) whose other projects have had releases on Goner Records, HoZac and Trouble In Mind. They were soon joined by Jeff Raty on drums and and Dani Damage on bass.School Damage's sound is defined by wonky keyboards, weaving bass lines, and lyrics focused on the anxieties of modern life and love. They take cues from 80s DIY pop outfits such as The Vaselines, Young Marble Giants and The Particles."A lot of the songs reflect a sense of self-doubt in relation to the world around me," says Carolyn. "I think the internet calls it a quarter life crisis." Jake says his School Damage songs are "about acting adult, having to have stressful small-talk conversations with people, not having fun in the rain etc."The album was recorded in Melbourne and Geelong by Billy Gardner (Ausmuteants, L iving Eyes) and mixed/mas-tered by Mikey Young (Total Control, Eddy Current Suppression Ring).School Damage's previous releases have been cassettes and 7"s on local labels Moontown and Detonic Records. They played King Gizzard's Gizzfest in 2016 and have shared stages with the likes of The Bats, Twerps and The Cannanes.

Kath Bloom is an American legend of folk, country, blues and avant-garde music. She has been making records since the late 70s, and has had her music featured in the movie Before Sunrise by Richard Linklater (starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy), but from 1984 up until Finally released no new material of her own, bar a few self-distributed cassettes and CD-Rs.Born in Connecticut, Kath met avant-garde guitarist Loren Mazzacane Connors in 1976, teaming up with him for a series of now highly sought-after albums of traditional blues, folk, and Bloom originals. Four of these albums have been reissued as double disc CDs by Chapter Music. Finally compiles Kath Bloom's heartbreaking, lovelorn and remarkably beautiful songs recorded since the early 90s. They reveal a mother-of-three songwriter as accomplished and affecting as any of her more acclaimed colleagues such as Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch or Hazel Dickens.

Melbourne pop eccentric Gregor releases his fourth album Satanic Lullabies, his deepest and darkest record yet.In the years since his first album, 2016's Thoughts & Faults, Gregor's music has got progressively odder, more challenging and more rewarding. The spacious, acerbic pop of Silver Drop (2018), featuring touching single A Song About Holding Hands, was followed by the lovesick Destiny (2020), which put Gregor's inquisitive pop through a warped filter. Now Satanic Lullabies has polar extremes of wide-eyed innocence and deep despair. There are moments of great musical beauty that segue into harsh, bleak soundscapes. "I'm seeking to draw attention to the similarities between heaven and hell," says Gregor, "and to comfort anyone who recognises these."Satanic Lullabies is a modern epic, a bedroom odyssey, like if pre-MAGA Kanye made a Disney soundtrack.Gregor's live show ranges from solo mode up to a ten piece band, and he has played festivals such as Golden Plains, Dark Mofo, Inner Varnika, Boogie and The Others Way (NZ). He was nominated for Best Album and Best Solo Artist in the 2019 Music Victoria Awards, and Best Pop Act in 2021.

Australian duo Yirinda combine ancient Aboriginal language with sublime modern production. Fred Leone and Samuel Pankhurst's music invokes thousands of generations of story and culture, while emerging as something entirely new.Fred is one of three Butchulla songmen - a song and language custodian for the Butchulla people from the Fraser Coast region of Queensland, including K'gari (formerly known as Fraser Island). He sings the songs onthis album in the endangered Butchulla language, now spoken by only a handful of people.Samuel is an internationally acclaimed contrabassist / producer known for his kaleidoscopic harmonies and polyrhythmic mastery. He has scored extensively for contemporary dance, recently for notable choreographerThomas Kelly's celebrated work SILENCE.Their self-titled debut album was recorded in Brisbane by Samuel, then mixed in London by Jake Miller (Björk, Arca, Yves Tumor) and mastered at Abbey Road by Alex Wharton (The Beatles, My Bloody Valentine). The album sets Fred's powerful vocals against striking experimental soundscapes, rich with strings, horns, double bass, synthesizer, piano and percussion. The result is otherworldly, a timeless art music outsideWestern convention.Yirinda have performed at the Australian Art Music Awards, Vivid Festival, Golden Plains, Dark Mofo, Supersense and been covered by ABC Radio and NME Australia.Fred has toured Europe as a member of The Black Arm Band, and as a solo artist supporting and guesting with Xavier Rudd. He founded Queensland's first Aboriginal hip hop label Impossible Odds in 2009.Samuel has performed with the Brodsky String Quartet and is a member of the Australian Art Orchestra. His studio work covers everything from the Bluey TV show to Hiatus Kaiyote.
