Rising UK duo Mia Mendi returns for their second outing on Watergate Records with the retro-tinged Robosynapse EP. The label debut of Mia Mendi was a notable 2021 highlight for the Oberbaumbrücke imprint. Titled 'Ubi’, the EP was a collaboration with Thomas Gandey and demonstrated their full-bodied dancefloor approach, injecting their unique sound signature into a modern progressive house palette. ‘Robosynapse’ is no less exciting (or fun). The title track is a plump nu wave houser, driven by soaring retro synths, a gutsy electro bassline and an 80s guitar solo. ‘Simulated Reality’ buzzes and hums, seven minutes of emotional electro and crispy drumlines, before handing the baton to ‘Cyborg String’, which continues the dreamy throwdown. Alan Dixon makes his first contribution to Watergate Records and re-fashions ‘Robosynapse’ into a glistening cosmic-tinged beast, amplifying the focus on the guitar lead. Fresh off her label debut with the excellent ‘Mind Control’ EP, Henri Bergmann makes a welcome return to re-work ‘Simulated Reality’ into a powerful melodic gem, heightening the focus on the synths. Since kicking off their production partnership during lockdown last year, UK duo Mia Mendi and musical polymath Thomas Gandey (aka Cagedbaby) have enjoyed a fruitful link up; a Beatport no.1 with ‘Cultum’ released on Mia Mendi’s new imprint hydera, a stunning cut on Stil Vor Talent’s Schneeweiß compilation followed by an impressive debut EP on Los Suruba’s Nazca Records titled ‘Paracas’. Now they’ve stepped up for a maiden label offering on Watergate. ‘Ubi’ is a trio of aces that reinforces why this musical union is turning all the right heads. The title track is seductive and punchy, driven by a snaking groove and an intriguing top-line melody, complimented by Gandey’s on-point vocals. ‘ Gatekeeper’ brings atmosphere in spades as an underbelly of acid and crisp rolling beats keep tempo, before the forest clears and Gandey’s yearning vox comes into focus as luscious pads swirl in the mist. ‘ Nightliner’ is the sexy closer and distinctly ‘80s in spirit, as racey synths and a plump bottom end dominate the show.

What began as a challenge to fight creative stagnation, soon grew into a fully-fledged audio-visual project for Belgian DJ, producer and live artist, Biesmans. Setting himself the goal of making three tracks per week for a month, he re-scored ‘80s pop culture moments – including films, TV shows and games, resulting in a brilliant 12-track work encompassing new wave, indie, dark wave, electro and disco. Moving his modular-heavy studio to Berlin in 2014, the ensuring years saw Joris Biesmans drop heat on Correspondent, Disco Halal, Aeon, 17 Steps and Future Disco. He’s been a core member of Watergate family since his arrival in the capital, working as the club’s sound technician. He made his debut on Watergate Records in 2020 with the well-received ‘Electric Love’ EP. The ‘Planes, Trains & Automobiles’ album took shape in April last year as the lockdown was starting to take grip and Biesmans needed a positive distraction. Ensconced in the music of his childhood and ‘80s pop cultural fodder, he locked himself in his studio and set about creating, later digging through archival footage to match the music. Biesmans, who previously undertook work scoring films, was so absorbed by the process, he’d sometimes do it in reverse; allowing the vintage media be the guide. Throughout the period, the clips were shared each Monday, Wednesday and Friday on his Instagram, building up a firm following from fans, friends and colleagues. And thus, the project found its wings, developing into an album.

Sasha continues to make this year his own as he drops his debut EP on Watergate, ‘GameOvr’. The EP features two original tracks, including the long-awaited ‘Trigonometry’, and first class remixes from Cassy and La Fleur. After his recent critically acclaimed sell-out live shows at the Barbican and his ‘Out Of Time’ EP on Kompakt, not to mention gearing up for his RESISTANCE residency with John Digweed in Ibiza, Sasha officially confirms his debut release on Watergate Records. ‘Trigonometry’ has been a highlight in Sasha’s sets in recent months and has sparked many a heated debate online, from excited pleas for a Track ID, to urgent demands for a release date. The track is as ethereal as it is compelling, constantly building up to the sublime break down and those iconic chords that have left ravers spellbound worldwide. Swedish born Berlin-based La Fleur puts her stamp on the remix, keeping the riff but adding gravitas with a rhythmic bassline. She’s fast become a key player on the house and techno circuit, with a string of releases on the likes of Cocoon, Watergate, and Sasha’s own Last Night On Earth imprint. ‘GameOvr’ shows the producer’s tougher side; a strong techno track in keeping with Sasha’s constant focus on the future, always exploring new directions, though his signature groove is still on board. Revered Panorama Bar resident Cassy, whose stunning album ‘Donna’ was one of 2016’s outstanding releases, turns her hand to remixing the title track, delivering a harder edged driving cut with a heavier kick drum, echoing chords and hypnotic percussion. This EP marks yet another creative landmark in this, one of the most fruitful and exciting phases in Sasha’s distinguished career.

A collaborative rich EP, 8Kays links with Italian pair Glowal for the punchy ‘Matemática’, that brings plenty of eerie minor key vibes to the dancefloor thanks to the vocal contribution from Brasilian singer Abrão. ‘Falling Down’ sees 8Kays team up with the Buenos Aires-based producer and live act Juan Hansen for a captivating slice of electronic prog lit up by Hansen’s memorable vox and delicate strings. One for those special end-of-night moments.
Dutch pair Colyn & Beswerda suit up ‘Falling Down’ for a different occasion, adding a tougher backbone, while teasing out all the melodic flourishes to craft a remix that’s functional and stunning in equal doses. Man-of-the moment Chris Avantgarde then ramps up the intensity to eleven adding his own re-rub that’s everything we’ve come to love about the producer: bold, powerful and memorable. The EP ends with a terrific 8Kays solo cut, the luminescent ‘Lyra’, a dreamy arpeggio-driven gem that closes out the work beautifully.

Adana Twins return to Watergate Records with a magnificent three-tracker that begs for a summer
dancefloor (but the tracks are that good, they’ll be played for a while to come).
Since their label debut in 2017 with ‘Flower of Cane’, Adana Twins have become firm favourites of the
Oberbaumbrücke crew. From handling mix duties on ‘Watergate 25’ to holding down regular gigs at the
club prior to 2020, the Hamburg duo always deliver.
‘The Curve’ is their first release on WG since 2019’s cracking remixes of Josh Wink’s ‘Higher State of
Consciousness’. The title track is a big bouncy electro cut packed with plenty of groove. A super fun
production sure to bring a smile to your face. ‘Cyrus’ belongs in a motion picture and is epic in
composition. It traverses cyborg breaks before moving into a retro key-laden riff, all the while driven by a
powerful ‘Silence / Violence’ vocal. This was made for a big festival moment. ‘Alone’ is the emotional final.
At first propelled by an ‘80s synth and airy pads before a shimmering lead takes control and pushes the
track into celestial terrain.
