In late 1974, India Navigation label owner Bob Cummins set up microphones in a New York City building's storefront, documenting two short sets by a band with no alternate takes or additional cuts. These recordings became saxophonist Alan Braufman's debut album Valley of Search, which captures a unique and very alive historical slice of New York's creative improvised jazz underground. The first ever reissue of the 1975 free jazz album "Valley of Search" features Cooper-Moore and Cecil McBee.

This recently unearthed recording captures saxophonistAlan Braufman with his five-piece band in an early 1975 live radio session soon after recording his debut album Valley of Search for the India Navigation label. This was the first meeting of William Parker and Cooper-Moore, whose musical partnership has flourished ever since. The 94-minute performance is spread over 5 sides on 3 LPs / 2CDs. Mexican-born, New York-based vibraphonist, marimbist, improviser and composer Patricia Brennan has confirmed the release of her debut full-length album Maquishti on the Valley of Search label.

The twelve original instrumentals that make up the album were composed and performed solo by Brennan on vibraphone and marimba. Employing unusual performance techniques and occasional electronics, many of the compositions were borne from improvisations created live in the studio at the time of recording. At times, exploring silence and space, stillness and patience, the album investigates new sonic territories with an endless sense of curiosity.

Eternal Words is the debut album from Tomas Nordmark, an experimental Swedish composer, sound artist, and designer living and working in London. Nordmark was educated at the University of Linko?ping in Sweden where he studied Audio Culture and Contemporary Art. His compositions and works have been featured in short films, theatre plays and in exhibitions. The slow and evolving phase-shifting compositions on "Eternal Words" are based on the same principle used by the American minimalists (specifically Terry Riley and Steve Reich), while the melodic textures are based on ancient Scandinavian music and sacred hymns - a tonality far from the downtown NYC avant garde. With this juxtaposition "Eternal Words" builds a forward-looking electronic soundscape, escaping the repetitive loop of contemporary time without imposing any specific stylistic dogma.

In 1975, the New York City alto saxophonist Alan Braufman released his debut album, Valley of Search, on the India Navigation label. Braufman went on to record and tour with everyone from Carla Bley to The Psychedelic Furs, and didn't release another album under his name until 2020's The Fire Still Burns, which received rave reviews from The WIRE, Downbeat, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and NPR. 2024's Infinite Love Infinite Tears is a surprisingly catchy program of free jazz, richly detailed and forthright, embodying a range of emotions and circumstances that convey individuality, collectivity and hope. There is much history and love in this band, and in Alan Braufman's art overall. Fifty-odd years after debuting on record, his sound-world is as vital and inviting as ever.
