Out of print on vinyl since the '70s, this prime slab of '65 Buck is Buck at his best. Topping the country charts and being named the Billboard Country album of the year the interest in this album never wained. This is THE Buck Owens album to own, as it is the apex of his career with the Buckaroos. Don Rich never sounded tighter (and even throws a guest vocal with "Wham Bam"). There has never been a more distinctive & instantly recognizable sound in country music than Buck Owens, and this album is reflective of that. There are a handful of hits on this one, including the title track, "Cryin' Time," and "Memphis." If you only have room for one Buck Owens album, well, this is it! Cut all analog and pressed on orange vinyl. This is a 2024 Black Friday Record Store Day release.

The Standells’ key albums for the Tower label (Dirty Water, Why Pick On Me, and Try It) perfectly bottled a rebellious wave of sound sweeping across Mid-1960’s teen clubs, radio playlists and record racks. Starting with the genre-defining, proto-punk smash “Dirty Water”, through a series of equally memorable underdog anthems (“Sometimes Good Guys Don’t Wear White,” “Why Pick on Me”) and obscenities (the banned “Try It”), the Standells left an indelible mark on their era. Those three Tower albums are a veritable feast of three chord, fuzz-drenched, Vox Organ-driven “squares”-repellant. Built around the banned title track, Try It is a tale of two (LP) sides; one a cohesive step into super-charged ’67 Standells Soul, the other a bet-hedging exercise that compiles possibly the strongest material of the band’s career. Latter includes the classic Standells style, either at its most pulverizing (“Barracuda,” “Riot on Sunset Strip”) or now one foot into psychedelia (“All Fall Down,” “Did You Ever Have That Feeling”). It provides the perfect bookend to the Standells’ legendary Tower Records era albums. Also available on compact disc! Track Listing: Side 1: 1. Can't Help But Love You 2. Ninety-Nine And A Half 3. Trip To Paradise 4. St. James Infirmary 5. Try It 6. Animal Girl 7. Soul Drippin' Side 2:1. Barracuda 2. Did You Ever Have That Feeling 3. All Fall Down 4. Poor Shell Of A Man 5. Riot On Sunset Strip 6. Get Away From Here 7. Try It (alternate vocal)

Innermost Limits of Pure Fun, with its whimsical, philosophical “California” title, was a groundbreaking project in the history of sports footage. Filmmaker George Greenough was unencumbered by any commercial reasons for designing boards, boats, or in his wave riding technique, a true SOUL SURFER if there ever was one. With the means, and ideas, to use underwater camera gear that had not been previously used – and still rarely used to such great effect – Greenough’s two late ’60s cinematic efforts were the maximum effect, in the effort of communicating the feel of surfing to the viewer. Some of the non-surfers overwhelmed by the beauty of his work within Innermost came to George and offered their help for the follow-up, to be titled Echoes. These ho-dads from England were better known to the world as Pink Floyd. In choosing who to soundtrack his debut masterpiece, Greenough went with the most dynamic band to record during the surf instrumental era of the early ’60s, Capitol Records 45 r.p.m. artists The Dragons, who released “Troll” in 1964. The single was actually an excerpt from a soundtrack recorded for the early Dale Davis film, Strictly Hot. What set it apart from the reverbed surf crunchers of the early ’60s was its beyond “Pipeline” instrumentation. Keyboard riffs meshed fluidly with bass harmonica, sophisticated percussion, snap drums, and a fuzzy guitar ripping through bass lines so thick you would swear there was an orchestra behind them. That made sense, since the father of some Dragons was leader of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Carmen Dragon. By 1969, The Dragons had progressed within a world ready for jazz improvisation in rock. Some of them had toured with the “Good Vibrations” era Beach Boys. It was with great intuition that George Greenough chose The Dragons for this soundtrack to Innermost Limits of Pure Fun; for they had been itching to do a project where they could really let themselves GO. And there, you get it, within the package before you. Wha

FIRST TIME ON VINYL—The birth of country cool! The Johnny Cash you hear on these two remarkable live performances is not the venerable legend of today. This was the young, feral Cash, full of piss, vinegar and sly orneriness. Even to those who know every note, joke and guitar lick on Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison or San Quentin, hearing Cash in his prime, aided and abetted by the Tennessee Two, guitarist Luther Perkins and bassist Marshall Grant, is a revelation. These historic documents, sourced directly from the 1958 and 1959 kinescope reels, capture Cash in his most revolutionary days, laying the bedrock of all that was to come and—despite age and infirmities—continues today.

The Youngbloods' sophomore release Earth Music is an uncommonly solid follow-up, expanding upon the musical directions introduced on their debut LP. The infectious "Sugar Babe" (also featured in Michelangelo Antonioni's film Zabriskie Point) is one of the group's most popular tunes, while such numbers as "All My Dreams Blue," "Dreamer's Dream" and "Fool Me" demonstrate the strength of the band members' songwriting skills and customized covers of Tim Hardin's "Reason to Believe," the Holy Modal Rounders' "Euphoria" and Chuck Berry's "Monkey Business" demonstrate the Youngbloods' talent for seamlessly integrating a broad array of influences.

Arriving in 1978, X-Dreams is an infatuating and resolutely feminine free-form exploration of the politics and dynamics of sex. In the pursuit to reconcile the duality of attraction & repulsion and love & cruelty, the album oscillates between an assertive opening side and a sweeter side B. Assembling a crew of 22 musicians (including Mick Ronson on guitar and Bill Bruford on drums), Peacock delivers impassioned vocal performances alongside an improvisational jazz-rock fusion masterpiece of musicianship, almost all of which was recorded in one take.

Released in 1979, this prophetic stew of spoken word, jazz, and funk from Annette Peacock was wildly ahead of its time and is still salient today. Her unflinching examinations of capitalism, sex, religion, et al. are underscored by lengthy, gorgeous grooves. Peacock wields her voice with wild abandon, at times delivering a melody like a Beat poet while other times wailing out of her throat like a saxophone, hitting blue notes as she pleases. Where most musicians riff, she creates sonic space. Perhaps too esoteric to garner commercial praise at the time, with this reissue we’re proud to encourage the discovery and praise that The Perfect Release deserves.

Motor City legends Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels set unsurpassed standards for balls-out American white-boy R&B. Under the aegis of crack producer Bob Crewe, the Wheels shot to fame, propelled by Ryder\'s sweat-soaked soulful vocals, the piercing, mile-a-minute guitar sting of Jim McCarty, and the piledriver drum attack of Johnny Bee. Attacking rock and R&B with a startling, head-on frenzy, the group created a rock-n-soul dynasty still without equal.

The archetype for the '60s-era girl group was etched indelibly into stone, like a commandment: three pretty girls with matching outfits and bouffant hairdos would sing, with musical backing supplied by a bunch of guys standing in the shadows. The Quatro sisters shattered that archetype forever with the Pleasure Seekers, an all-girl teenage rock & roll group who played all the instruments themselves and were fully capable of wiping the stage with any male band that crossed their path. Classical infused psych from NY groovers Ars Nova! Through their creative use of medieval modes, hook-driven pop, & trombone, Ars Nova delivers psychedelia within a classical & prog rock lens, a style that’s their own, yet recalls bands like Left Banke, Honeybus, and Aphrodite’s Child - all who were experimenting with the short-lived baroque pop craze. Pressed on green vinyl! Ars Nova was something totally different for the musical ears of 1968, and still sounds fresh and exciting today, when you think of the great albums of ‘68, like Abbey Road, White Light/White Heat, The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter, The Move, Electric Ladyland, This Was or Wonderwall Music shows how influential the year was and yet, Ars Nova with its wide sphere of influences has nothing in common with the trends of the year. The only albums that it can be vaguely compared to is either the Velvet Underground or United States of America, both bands that, like Ars Nova, bucked against existing trends and the end of psychedelia, instead preferring to go their own unique way. This is American progressive music, and takes the art of music making into a different genre, an alternative alleyway. The intelligence and musical nous that spans [this album] is really worth diving into and enjoying. It’s always great to get to hear albums like this, as it provides a counterpoint to the contemporary of the time and gives a real insight into the underground and alternative scene of that era. The beauty of being underground and away from the mainstream is that something that is not of its time ends up being timeless.

"The self-titled Eden’s Children album rocks heavy with psych fuzz guitar, echoing, rotund bass runs and wild drums. Rich plays hard and fast, much like Alvin Lee in the band Ten Years After at times. The softer tunes have intricate guitar runs with overdubbed vocals by Richard, their only voice. The band fits right in with other power trios like Cream, Hendrix, Chariot and Blue Cheer. The only single released was 'Goodbye Girl' b/w 'Just Let Go' that made the local charts in the east and the LP made the top 200 on the Billboard and Cashbox charts [in 1968].” – David Handyside (Psychedelic Digest)

Legend On Legend!

Eddy’s superb reverb-drenched renditions of Dylan’s biggest hits gives your ears a fresh take on these familiar favorites. Full of twang and gut bucket harmonica, this collection of 12 songs encapsulates the ‘60s in a way only Duane Eddy could.

Originally released in 1965, the album has remained one of the rarest and hard-to-get collectibles for Duane Eddy fans everywhere. Produced by Lee Hazelwood, the album is completely instrumental and showcases Eddy’s individual stylings of the 1960s.

Eddy’s guitar romps and soars through Dylan’s brain waves – translated in this album into notes which build and explode into bar lines of enjoyable melodies. By instrumentally interpreting 12 of the significant songs of the 60’s, Eddy proves there is quality and richness in popular music, too often knocked down for its tendency toward shrillness and over-amplification.

What Bob Dylan is capable of saying with his magical way with words, Duane Eddy is capable of saying instrumentally. As you will undoubtedly hear, it’s a happy marriage.

Crow’s third and final release, Mosaic, was originally released in 1971. Largely unrecognized at the time, Mosaic contained one minor hit- “(Don’t Try To Lay No Boogie Woogie On The) King Of Rock And Roll,” which easily beats the subsequent version by Long John Baldry. Mosaic also features a catchy original song that should’ve been a hit- “Keeps Me Running.”

Like their prior albums, Crow’s powerful organ-laden blues rock carries early ‘70s rock to new heights! Blending a new mixture of country and blues, with heavy steel pedal on “Watching Can Waste Up The Time,” Mosaic was Crow’s last effort to make it big before vocalist’s David Wagner departed the group. Taking funky rhythms, lots of wah-wah guitar, and hard-edged vocals makes this album a must-hear!

Despite their lack of commercial success in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, Crow proves themselves to be skilled songwriters and musicians. Their unique combination of blues and garage rock is sure to satisfy!

Surging brass and organ-laden funk wonderment!

Formed in 1967, Crow combines gritty blues with nasty, hard-charging garage rock. Inspired by the likes of The Ventures and The Trashmen, Minnesota natives Harry Nehls, Dick Wiegand, and Larry Wiegand combined forces with ex-Jokers Wild members David Wagner and Dave “Kink” Middlemist. Originally known as South 40, the band released two singles and one album, Live at Someplace Else, on Metrobeat Records.

After winning a recording session with Columbia from a battle of the bands contest in Des Moines, Iowa, the band recorded five demos: Evil Woman, Time to Make a Turn, Busy Day, and White Eyes. Columbia didn’t offer the band a contract, but Dunwich signed the band.

To give their sound a more commercial appeal, Dunwich added horns to Evil Woman without the band’s knowledge- and it worked! Crow signed with Capitol subsidiary Amaret Records after turning down Atlantic, hoping to be a big fish in a small pond. Recording their first electrifying album, Crow Music, in 1969, Crow delivered their very best. Before it was covered by Black Sabbath and Ike & Tina Turner, their acclaimed single, Evil Woman (Don’t Play Your Games With Me), hit the Top 20 that Fall. Reminiscent of Blood, Sweat & Tears, Deep Purple, and James Gang, Crow blends an alluring mix of soul, funk, blues, psychedelia, and garage rock into one package. I’m sure you’ll agree Crow Music is a holy grail of heart-poundin’, grease grindin’ rock!

Following up their initial 1969 release Crow Music, Crow turns up the heat with Crow By Crow! Recalling bands like Eden’s Children and Crabby Appleton, Crow By Crow was released in May of 1970. Though the album only charted at #181, it spawned two minor hits- the Larry Williams cover “Slow Down,” and an original, “Cottage Cheese.” Performed live, Cottage Cheese was a crowd favorite. It’s raunchy blues boogie and skin-beating drum break, compliments of ex-Castaways drummer Denny Craswell, was sure to get fans movin’ and shakin'!

Despite their success on the airwaves, Crow had declining commercial sales. Their records were rarely kept in stock, if they were in a record store at all, which dampened their sensational live shows. If their record couldn’t be found, no matter how great it was, Crow would be forgotten.

Thankfully, Crow By Crow can be found in the bins once again! It’s dynamic, gutsy blues rock will be sure to have you on the dance floor in no time!

A heady and adventurous experience with ever-shifting elements of jazz, fuzz guitar, blues rock and psychedelia!

Graffiti’s origins can be traced back to 1967 and the dissolution of The Hangmen, a popular Washington DC area garage rock act well noted for the proto-punk stylings of their singles “What A Girl Can’t Do” and “Faces.” Singer Tony Taylor, a late addition to the band’s lineup, recruited guitarist George Strunz to the group and soon announced the band would pursue a more psychedelic direction. It didn’t take long for Graffiti to attract label attention, and by August of 1968 the band signed to ABC Records and released their debut single, “He’s Got The Knack.” In November of 1968 they released their one and only album.

The juxtaposition between Graffiti’s smooth vocal harmonies and their intricate songwriting is stark. One moment the group is immersed in all of the feel-good pop songwriting tropes of the era, oftentimes quite reminiscent of acts like The Association and The Mamas & The Papas. Meanwhile, the next moment sees the band vamping into extended passages, odd chord sequencing, and off beat time signatures, highlighted by Strunz’s frequent fuzz laced soloing and the energetic drumming of Richie Blakin.

The legacy of Graffiti’s self-titled debut was seemingly hampered by the fact that that it is often lumped in with the plethora of other one-and-done psych releases of the time, an era in which major labels were falling over one another in an attempt to capitalize on the psychedelic sounds popularized by the Summer of Love. This is unfortunate because Graffiti’s approach to songwriting and blending together of jazz, classical, and rock elements are rather groundbreaking, precursors to the arrival of progressive rock - proto-prog pioneers, if you will.

“A door would open up and I would just go through it, and I just kept doing that for all my life.” — Mimi Roman

“A door would open and I would just go through it. . . .” That is how Mimi Roman, at 87, tells us of her life, including her time as a successful country singer in the 1950s and early 60s. But it took talent and a strong, beautifully distinctive voice for those doors to open, and to go far once on the other side. It also took guts and plenty of stamina for a 20-year-old Jewish cowgirl from Brooklyn in the 1950s to make her way to country music fame, albeit too briefly, before taking herself out of the game at the ripe old age of 28.

Although many country stars from the 50s and 60s have long faded into obscurity, Mimi Roman, for more than 60 years, has gently persisted in the hearts and minds of pure country, honky-tonk, and rockabilly fans around the world. But what makes Mimi different from many country stars from that “Golden Age” who now reside somewhere in anonymity? For many, the answer will be found in this special double album, The First Of The Brooklyn Cowgirls, which features newly released and restored personal acetates, publishing demos and radio and television transcriptions recorded during Mimi Roman's career. Mimi's story, like her voice, is remarkable. — Joe Hopkins (music historian)

First Of The Brooklyn Cowgirls almost exclusively features unissued material. The double CD is sourced from one of a kind reels and acetates taken from Mimi’s personal collection. These tracks are almost as rare as a Jewish girl from Brooklyn singing country music in the ‘50s & ‘60s!

For their fourth album, 1968's Once Upon A Dream, the Rascals decisively stepped into the future, dropping the "Young" from their name and embracing the period's spirit of musical adventure. The resulting album seamlessly integrates elements of jazz and psychedelia into the quartet's sound, along with adventurous arrangements and introspective, philosophical lyrics. While many of their contemporaries were getting lost in a psychedelic haze, the Rascals managed to expand their creative horizons without sacrificing the unpretentious tunefulness that first endeared them to fans. The Rascals produced the album themselves, with help from noted arranger Arif Mardin and engineers Tom Dowd and Adrian Barber, who helped to create the imaginative sound effects that punctuate the songs. The band's budding interest in jazz is reflected in the participation of such noted players as Ron Carter, Hubert Laws, Chuck Rainey, Richard Davis, Steve Marcus and King Curtis. The tunes—including the celebratory Top Ten hit "It's Wonderful"—are arranged as a song cycle, with sophisticated arrangements that incorporate jazz and orchestral textures, along with some of the band's most inventive vocal interplay. Highlights include the laid-back "Easy Rollin'" (a sequel of sorts to "Groovin'"), the blue-eyed soul gem "My World," the Eastern excursion "Sattva," the psychedelic epic "Rainy Day" and the fuzz-guitar-fueled, jazz-tinged "Please Love Me." Eddie's brother David Brigati, long an unsung hero for his behind-the-scenes contributions to the Rascals' prior albums, steps out front to sing Once Upon A Dream's title song. This fully restored edition of this one-of-a-kind album has been mastered from the original analog stereo tapes, with meticulously reproduced gatefold cover art. It's pressed on High-Definition Vinyl, all the better to make this dream a reality!

A decade before he was topping the country charts, Joe Stampley fronted one of the deep south’s most legendary and rockin’ ’60s combos, the Uniques. Once signed to Shreveport, Louisiana-based Paula Records, the Uniques made waves nationally on their very first release, “Not Too Long Ago.” That pop classic (faithfully/recently covered by Nick Lowe) is just one of many highlights of their ’66 debut LP, Uniquely Yours. According to the master tape, this record was originally going to be tagged The Uniques in Action; a shelved album title that could not have been more apt. Finally reissued (and in fabulous mono, to boot), this is southern rock ’n’ soul at its finest; a real mélange of styles that swings wildly from deep-fried garage rock, frenzied frat-beat, infectious Stampley-penned pop, and gorgeously soulful ballads. From Presley and Gene Vincent to any Justice label ’60s garage band worth mentioning, southerners have always littered their LPs with this latter fare. But when it comes to delivering a soulful ballad, Joe Stampley is up there with the very best of ’em. Uniquely Yours includes the group’s all-time biggest regional hit, a cover of Art Neville’s “All These Things” (in its original mix, unadorned by string overdubs) and a “Georgia (On My Mind)” that simply blows away all other white boy soul renditions. But make no mistake, this is a largely uptempo set marked by the ferocious punk pace of “You Ain’t Tuff,” updated rockabilly funkiness of “Fast Way of Living,” blistering guitar workouts like “Strange,” plus some of the best damned covers ever waxed. For a positively unique album experience, Sundazed includes the classy period sleeve design from the original Paula release. TRACK LISTING: 1. You Ain’t Tuff 2. From Heaven to a Heartbreak 3. Bob Thompson's landmark orchestral tribute to wheels, wings, and whirly birdsby Irwin Chusid In the late 1950s, when Mexican-born Space Age Pop avatar Esquivel was in his prime, orchestra leader/composer/arranger Bob Thompson was his American stylistic counterpart. They recorded for the same label (RCA Victor), employed many of the same musicians and vocalists, and experimented with sound in the same Los Angeles studios. His RCA albums, Mmm, Nice!, Just for Kicks, and On the Rocks, embody 1950s orchestral pop: brimming with sparkle and sophistication, an appealing soundtrack for the Good Life. Thompson won a number of Clio awards for excellence in advertising music, and in 1959 the title track of Just For Kicks was Grammy-nominated for Best Performance by an Orchestra. Thompson took temporary leave from RCA in 1960 to record The Sound of Speed. This "concept" LP rhapsodizes the technology of human transport, from Vespa scooters to Le Mans racers, from tricycles to rocket ships. Each of the dozen vehicular vignettes is book-ended by authentic sound effects, with vivid stereo motion. The music was composed and arranged by Thompson, and the album was recorded in Italy by the Orchestra dei Concerti de Roma, conducted by Paul Baron. Thompson is a long-admired Hollywood music figure who worked with Rosemary Clooney, Judy Garland, Van Dyke Parks, Duane Eddy, and Bing Crosby, among others. But why take our word? Take Henry Mancini's: "Bob's writing skill has always impressed me." Or that of Van Dyke Parks: "Bob Thompson is a giant. In music and character, a true romantic with an edge. His arrangements are incomparably thoughtful, subtle, flamboyant, and circumspect. With them, he brought the art of arranging to a new symbiosis." The Sound of Speed is an overlooked gem from a bygone era of orchestral elegance. It has been masterfully re-mastered by Sundazed svengali Bob Irwin in wide-angle stereo in the year that its creator, Bob Thompson, turns 85. The Sound of Speed is you

Mono A & B sides singles collection from influential Tex-Mex combo! Texas-bred singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Doug Sahm was one of the most important musicians ever to emerge from the Lone Star state, and an inspiration to multiple generations of roots-conscious rock 'n' rollers. Sahm did much of his most beloved work as leader of the seminal Sir Douglas Quintet, the audaciously eclectic band that first burst onto the national scene in 1965. With trusty sidekick Augie Meyers providing distinctive support on the Vox organ, the Quintet delivered an infectious, eclectic mix that encompassed Tex-Mex border pop, raw garage-rock, hipster honky-tonk, horn-driven R&B and more. The Sir Douglas Quintet’s most productive and influential period was its late-'60s/early-'70s stint with Mercury Records and its sister labels Smash and Philips. That period saw the SDQ relocate from Texas to San Francisco and record some of their most enduring and adventurous music. And that music never sounded better than on the mono mixes that graced the singles that the band released during that period, which are collected on this deluxe set.The Mono Singles' 22 songs include the band's 1969 signature smash "Mendocino," along with such Sahm standards as "At the Crossroads," "Dynamite Woman," "Nuevo Laredo," "Texas Me," "And It Didn't Even Bring Me Down," "Michoacan" and his heartfelt rendition of Freddy Fender's "Wasted Days, Wasted Nights," plus a selection of rare non-album B-sides. The collection also features Sahm's historic Nashville recording "Be Real," which he released under the pseudonym "Wayne Douglas" in an attempt to break into the conservative mainstream country market. This unique collection has been sourced from the original analog mono masters. This high-definition vinyl 2-LP set comes with extensive liner notes and lavish artwork. With these classic tracks now on vinyl, Doug Sahm's rootsy rock 'n' roll spirit shines brighter than ever! Also available on compact disc!

Despite a myriad of obstacles, Moby Grape managed to persevere and create a potent and enduring body of recorded work, recording four albums during its original 1967–1969 lifespan. While 1967’s Moby Grape is widely acknowledged as a classic (and one of rock’s greatest debut albums), the subsequent Wow, Moby Grape ’69 and Truly Fine Citizen are all underrated gems with much to recommend them. It’s a measure of the musicians’ abundance of talent and creativity that, despite the multiple roadblocks that they confronted, Moby Grape recorded prolifically and cut a wealth of originally unreleased material. The Place and the Time offers a scintillating assortment of rare tracks cut during the band’s heady 1967–1968 heyday. Encompassing audition recordings, album outtakes, alternate versions, live material and more, the recordings offer a powerful testament to the remarkable rapport that made Moby Grape such a unique force. The fact that music this stunning and original sat on the shelf for so long is just another in the litany of injustices that haunt the Moby Grape story. But the band’s majestic recorded legacy has outlasted the bad luck, bad choices and bad vibes. The music remains as fresh and inspiring as ever, and the vintage material featured in this collection constitutes a crucial addition to Moby Grape’s already monumental body of work. A once shocking 1962 LP of love songs…by men, for men. A long lost treasure featuring the cool & sophisticated vocals of Gene Howard and a cast of prime studio jazz musicians, performing a set of standards sung to a male suitor. Ahead of its time in every way. Reissued for the first time ever for Record Store Day’s Black Friday! Available on CD and pristine RTI pressed gold vinyl! A fantastic, once-shocking album finally sees reissue - and brings with it the answer to a half-century mystery! Case file: A big band vocalist, a Hollywood photographer, and an LGBT music and history archivist - they are the heart of the story behind Love Is A Drag, a 1962 shrouded-in-mystery long-player comprised of love songs by men, for men. Decades ago, JD Doyle, renowned LGBT music historian and archivist, happened upon a copy of Love Is A Drag. Resonating with him immediately, the album presented compositions such as “The Man I Love” and “Mad About The Boy,” (songs that were intended to be sung by a woman to a man), and featured them as songs performed by a man to another man. Doyle would often play cuts from it on his radio show, Queer Music Heritage. He remained intrigued by the lack of either artist or producer credited on the album. A vague line of jacket text ambiguously announced, “For Adult Listeners Only - Sultry Stylings by a Most Unusual Vocalist.” And, the facts behind the album would have most likely remained unclear if it were not for one Murray Garrett (Hollywood star-photographer through the late 1940s to the 1970s). Out of the blue, Murray Garrett contacted JD Doyle and wanted to talk about the album. According to Garrett, through his photography career, he had forged a friendship and partnership with prolific big band vocalist, Gene Howard. The two worked together on projects, eventually teaming with Jack Ames, founder of Edison International Records. When queried for ideas for a potential Edison International release, Garrett recalled a performance he had o

Exploding from AM radio speakers everywhere in 1965, The Knickerbockers’ “Lies” is a certified ‘60s classic. Much has been made over its sonic similarity to the Beatles, particularly the Lennon-esque lead vocals. True, it is remarkable in that regard but what is often overlooked is just how GREAT the song is in its own right. Written by band members Beau Charles and Buddy Randell, it is a superbly crafted composition that could have been a hit for any number of artists. That the Knickerbockers? ferocious version sounds like it was ripped from the soundtrack to “A Hard Day’s Night” is just gravy. But great as it is, there is so much more to the band?s story than their biggest hit.\n\nBrothers John and Beau Charles formed the band in Bergenfield, New Jersey in 1962. Bobby played bass, Beau played guitar and they both sang. They moved through various group personnel, eventually solidifying the lineup with vocalist/saxophonist Bobby Randell and drummer Jimmy Walker. Both of the new recruits already had recording experience, Randall with the Royal Teens (“Short Shorts”) and Walker with The Castle Kings (“You Can Get Him Frankenstein”). Together, the quartet forged their sound as they filled the dance floors on the tough east coast club circuit. While playing the University Twist Palace in Albany, New York, they were spotted by producer and artist Jerry Fuller, who subsequently signed them to Challenge Records in Hollywood.\n\nAfter recording two non-charting singles for the label, the group’s third, “Lies,” burst into the Top Twenty. Songwriters Keith and Linda Colley provided the follow-up single, “One Track Mind,” a relentlessly upbeat song that stalled at #45. They tried again with another Colley track, “High On Love,” piled high with stacked vocals and fuzz-fortified guitars, but it failed to chart. While the group was consistently making top-notch records, their label was struggling. Without adequate distribution and promotional muscle to compete with bigger indies

Beginning as a duo in Edinburg, Scotland, acoustic musicians Robin Williamson and Clive Palmer sought to stretch the boundaries of contemporary folk music from the start. Composing much of their own material rather than relying solely on the hidebound traditional repertoire, they were spotted by Elektra Records Joe Boyd while playing in the Crown Bar and, duly impressed, he signed them to the label. After adding additional guitarist Mike Herron, they traveled to London’s Sound Techniques Studio in May 1966 to record their self-titled debut album with Boyd producing. Incredibly, they completed recording in two days, with Boyd instructing them to focus on their original compositions. The resulting album, featuring only three traditional tunes among the sixteen tracks, was quite unorthodox despite its standard instrumentation of guitars, mandolin, banjo and fiddle. It was a pioneering example of what later became known as psychedelic folk or psych-folk and it was an instant hit with adventurous music consumers. Bob Dylan singled out Robin Williamson’s “October Song” as a particular favorite and the LP won Folk Album of the Year in

From the minute he walked into Sun Studios, Johnny Cash began a career that would see him become one of the biggest and most influential musicians of our time. Though only on Sun from 1955-58, Johnny made some of his most legendary recordings there. When he moved on to Columbia Records, Johnny left behind a large cache of material which Sun happily compiled and released on LPs throughout the 60’s, mixing Cash’s singles-sides with previously unissued recordings. The resulting platters were a goldmine for fans eager to hear more from country’s newest superstar. From the original Sun masters, featuring many raw, in-the-studio sides (sans overdubs) - the Man in Black has never sounded better! Released June 15, 1960, Johnny Cash Sings Hank Williams is not quite an accurate title. Only four of the album’s twelve tracks are Hank Williams’ songs with all but one of the remaining tracks composed by Cash. Whatever the title, this is a fantastic collection of early tracks from Sun, including “Straight A’s in Love,” “I Walk the Line” and “Folsom Prison Blues.” Also included is the lean rocker “Mean Eyed Cat,” featuring hot rockabilly licks from Luther Perkins. A thrilling platter from start to finish!

With his Presley-like mystique, a strapping baritone voice and songs with universal lunchbucket appeal, Johnny Cash reached one of many career high-water marks with his sprawling 1963 epic, Blood, Sweat And Tears. From the perspiration-drenched, eight-minute version of “The Legend Of John Henry’s Hammer” to “Busted,” Harlan Howard’s down ‘n’ out hard-luck story, Cash made everything he recorded sound like it had been written just for him. This exact replica of Cash’s 1963 classic—on rock-busting Sundazed High-Definition Vinyl—shows Cash once again straddling the worlds of country, folk and pop like a black-clad behemoth: a once-in-a-generation artist whose revered work will live on forever.

The shimmering follow-up to Present Tense, 1968’s pop-psych cult classic by producers Gary Usher and Curt Boettcher’s studio-only project Sagittarius (“My World Fell Down”), 1969’s The Blue Marble once again finds Usher crafting still more sunshiney, Beach Boys-esque dreamscapes. As he did for Present Tense, Usher called on the cream of L.A.’s studio pros as well as members of the like-minded Millennium, and the results are once again magnificent. Layered with creamy vocal harmonies, brass, flute, and Moog synthesizer, The Blue Marble will have fans of the Millennium, the Association, the Yellow Balloon, and similarly grandiose baroque pop acts positively floating on air.

The Leaves’ sophomore album weaves blues, folk and garage together through kaleidoscopic shards of psychedelia to bring listeners All The Good That’s Happening.

Fired by youthful exuberance and a well-rounded repertoire of musical fashions, The Leaves, by all rights, should have turned into major stars. Despite the fact the band’s second and final album, “All The Good That’s Happening,” parented no winning singles and isn’t quite as potent as the first disc, the platter remains terribly underappreciated. Tracks such as the moody stupor of “On The Plane” and the ping-pong pulsations of “Lemmon Princess,” which carries a chaotic circus-like air, are decorated in psychedelic decals, while “Twilight Sanctuary” features some hard-driving harmonica blowing chained tight against giddy blues rock jamming.

The band’s blues influences additionally prevail on honest recyclings of Jimmy Reed’s raspy-throated “Let’s Get Together” and Buffy Sainte-Marie’s candidly cryptic “Codine,” along with “Flashback (The Rhythm Thing),” a retooling of John Lee Hooker’s “Crawling King Snake” that morphs into an intense boogie woogie instrumental. A copy of Manfred Mann’s “The One In The Middle” weighs in as another blues based item, and “To Try For The Sun” is a stark and haunting folk ballad.

Snapping guitars, compounded by strong and solid harmonies give the album a strutting garage rock edge, where smatterings of offbeat arrangements and curious effects zone in on the freakier side of The Leaves. To call the album trailblazing would be stretching the truth, but there are enough amusing and exciting ideas to keep listeners awake and interested. Personnel issues, paired with lack of promotion prevented “All The Good That’s Happening” to be heard, resulting in the end of a band that died on the vine (pun intended) way too soon.

From Quinteros’ early rockabilly singles to his San Fran folk rock with the Au-Go Go’s, this collection highlights his Brent singles along with unissued material, acetates, demos & outtakes! Includes a booklet with liner notes & an interview with Eddie!

Eddie Quinteros was one precocious kid. Before he was old enough to drive, he was singing on live TV and flying to Hawai’i to rock out at stadium gigs. When his contemporaries were still in high school, he was hitting the charts with a tune he wrote himself, playing on an Alan Freed package tour, and making multiple appearances on American Bandstand. And before the San Francisco singer/guitarist was out of his teens, he’d already been screwed over by a shifty manager and sworn off the music business.

Along the way, Quinteros cut a handful of jumping singles showing that if he’d had the right breaks, he could have altered history. Ritchie Valens wouldn’t have been the era’s only Chicano rock ‘n’ roll hero. Quinteros’ Southern rockabilly influences are audible in his early singles, but they’re filtered through the more citified point of view of a San Francisco teen. And in the mid ‘60s, he reinvented himself as the frontman for the Au Go-Go’s, turning out a chiming, folk-rock flavored sound more in line with
labelmates and fellow S.F.’ers the Beau Brummels.

All of Ed’s recorded output only amounted to a handful of 45s, but this collection sets things straight for posterity, featuring demos, unreleased tracks, live recordings, and acetates.

Trying to define what it is that makes Dr. John special is much like trying to define the word "soul'—you can surround it. But nailing it down is a whole ‘nother smoke. You can point to his sense of history, how he's never forgotten from whence he came, how his music always returns to his roots, even honoring the proud heritage of his native New Orleans. You can dissect his technique, marveling at the adroitness of the hands right and left; admiring the strong second line; respecting the tributes to his inspiration, Professor Longhair, apparent at every turn. And you can note how his peers consider his presence at a session as lending instant credibility to that particular project.

"Upon the release of The Brightest Smile in Town, the reviews were effusive. Chicago critic Bill Knight’s comparisons to Fats Waller and James P. Johnson were high compliments indeed. Downbeat’s Jim Roberts called the playing 'graceful'; noting that the LP had a broader scope than its predecessor. Jazz Times’ Rhodes Spedale summarized: 'He’s never been in better form than here.'

We kept in touch over the years. Mac was always generous and encouraging. Little did we know when The Brightest Smile in Town was released, what accolades lay ahead for Mac Rebennack and Dr. John. From the innovative guitar triumph 'Storm Warning' on the Rex label in 1959, to his 2012 Grammy-winning Locked Down album, Mac’s musical light shone brightly for seven decades. We were fortunate he chose to play for us. I’m sure he’d say that he was lucky too." - Jack Heyrman, Clean Cuts Producer

A lost solo piano record from the Night Tripper! Originally put to tape in ‘82 & ‘83 for the Clean Cuts label, these tracks have remained unheard until now. Two numbers feature the doc's raspy growl while his solo piano navigates us through the rest of the train ride, past touches of blues, jazz, and foot stompin’ boogie-woogie jive. It's the kind of magic that can only come from a dusty tape box.

In 1981, Dr. John began recording his first of two solo piano albums. The “new” performances featured on this release are of the same quality as the music on Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack and The Brightest Smile In Town.

His left hand creates a three-note rhythmic pattern that forms the foundation for the performance while his right soulfully plays the melody and then builds off of it in the tradition of the New Orleans piano blues masters. In other songs, it begins as a nostalgic and heartfelt ballad, picking up steam during the performance and switching moods several times before returning to where it began.

While it is a real shame that he would never again record a full album of unaccompanied solos (Dr. John enjoyed leading a band too much), the release of Frankie & Johnny gives one an additional opportunity to discover just how brilliant and spirited a pianist Mac Rebennack was during his colorful career.

Touted as the “new Doors,” Ars Nova’s second release shows the band genre-bending jazz and heavy psychedelia in a style that’s their own. Shifting from a largely classical centric sound, this was the group’s last album before going their separate ways. Pressed on pink vinyl!

Sunshine & Shadows takes the baroque-meets-psych sound of the debut and turns a bit more to the psych side. The stately brass interludes are gone, but horns still figure prominently in the mix. There’s some jazzy New Orleans flavor to a couple of the tunes, albeit twisted into a 7/4 vamp on “You Had Better Listen.”

The instrumentalists in the band, featuring trumpet and trombone, really give the music a unique flavor, setting them apart from the multitudes of other American psych bands. Ars Nova might be likened to Ultimate Spinach (but without the overly serious, pretentious lyrics) or later Zombies (though with less emphasis on the keyboards).

It’s all very well written and nicely played, and when they do a tender ballad like “Temporary Serenade,” the acoustic guitar is very lute-like, much more along the lines of classical than folk (like the later work of Jan Akkerman with Focus), and the trumpet descant adds a lovely spice.

“Well, Well, Well” is the heaviest rock tune in their repertoire, with a great electric guitar riff and hot organ playing, again set apart by trombone and trumpet. This one is definitely worth seeking out for baroque pop fans.

14 sizzlin’ surf guitar cuts recorded at the crest of the genre! Brothers Richard and Thomas Frost, more known for their work as Powder, shred through these surf-rockin’ standards – all tucked away until now!

Turning in a smoking rendition of studio guitarist Jan Davis’ “The Fugitive,” later covered by the Ventures (and much later, Laika & the Cosmonauts), they also lay down a hot version of “Opus Twist” – also by way of the Ventures, written by Tommy Allsup and J.I. Allison of the Crickets. Three other instrumentals came from the Let’s Hide Away & Dance Away With Freddy King album: “San-Ho-Zay,” “Just Pickin’,” and “Sen-Sa-Shun.” He delivers a lovely “Sleep Walk” sans Santo & Johnny’s steel guitar, and converts pianist Floyd Cramer’s “Last Date” to guitar.

Balancing out the program are live tracks from Big Al’s Gas House in neighboring Belmont, showing the emergence of British Invasion along with credible renditions of R&B warhorses “Linda Lu” and “Come On.” “Route 66” is obviously the Stones version, with Rich playing the Keith Richards guitar solo – “and ‘Roll Over Beethoven,’ you could tell it was the Beatles’ version because my guitar licks are George Harrison.”

Vividly illustrating the band’s meld of R&B and surf are the two versions of “San-Ho-Zay” – the relaxed groove in the bedroom versus the furious live rave. Lord knows what’s going on in “The Fight” – a typical set-opening/closing riff breaking up a brawl?

Though they never released even a 45, these live cuts and “Bedroom Tapes” prove without a doubt that they’d have been up to the task had the opportunity presented itself.

A Twangy Touch On 1960s Hits!

As one of America’s most influential guitarists, Duane Eddy’s famed twangy, reverb-drenched guitar shines on a wide variety of pop-rock hits, standards, and more!

Backed by two drummers, four more guitars, organ, piano, bass, saxes, and that's just the beginning, Duane goes unafraid at the kind of tunes that normally are "one person songs" Like "Ballad of the Green Berets" which becomes a twang-bang march under Duane's banner. Like "Monday, Monday" which was "The Mamas and Papas" and now has the wild newness of Duane Eddy.

After rising to fame in the late ‘50s with “Rebel Rouser,” Eddy’s influence on radio inspired musicians like George Harrison and Bruce Springsteen. Rockabilly and country music were both major factors in Eddy’s trademark sound; heavy, catchy guitar riffs over a ska-type beat. His hits included “Peter Gunn,” “Because They’re Young,” and “Twistin’ ‘n’ Twangin’.”

As music morphed into melodic sunshine pop, Eddy adapted his sound to fit chart hits of the ‘60s in his own twangy style.

Heavenly, crystalline psychedelic sounds, in our favored stereo mix! Jazzy, acoustic guitars and stacked Association-like harmonies showcase Tiffany Shade’s gorgeous originals and a rendition of Love’s “Softly To Me.” Pressed on lavender vinyl!

After a chance meeting in a record store, this Cleveland band got their start on Upbeat!, a local teen dance show similar to American Bandstand. Though their album was cut in two days over the course of 2 eight hour sessions, their arrangements shine through what was a scattered recording session. “We really worked hard in the studio even though we didn’t have enough time to do all the things we wanted to do with music,” bassist Robb Murphy remembers.

“We were pretty excited. We just had no experience with that sort of thing. We had heard things but never had any experience. We were really babes in the woods. It was a terrific experience looking back on it. It was really a hell of a lot of fun, we loved the idea of being able to overdub even though we didn’t get to do too much of that, it was still fun. That was pretty high tech in those days, being able to lay down a couple of tracks with your voice.” guitarist Mike Barnes recalls.

Similar to the Bosstown sound (Orpheus, Ultimate Spinach), Tiffany Shade lean towards harmony-driven vocals that combine their clever pop sensibilities with a versatile showcase of keys, organ, and scintillescent guitars. After their album’s release in ‘68, they had the opportunity to open for Big Brother & Holding Co., but because of poor sales (and like many Mainstream artists) the band didn’t last and went their separate ways in ‘69.

Bluesy rust-belt psych from Ohio's December's Children! Bouncing between male and female vocalists, tight harmonies, country flavor and rock 'n' roll style, their sound fit the transition between pop and heavy rock in the late '60s. Pressed on pink vinyl!

This country-blues psych album was originally released near the end of 1970, and though it was their sole album, December's Children are a good example of how music was changing between the end of the '60s and beginning of the '70s. Accented by psychedelic keys & organ (especially in "Trilogy"), it's been described as Texas garage rock, with funky, hook driven guitar - particularly in "Sweet Talkin' Woman" and "Last Monday Night."

Opting for a more straight forward rock 'n' roll sound, the band never considered themselves psychedelic (though that was being pushed at the time), and though they weren't as heavy as Blue Cheer, their country-blues sound is nearly a precursor to later albums by Savoy Brown and Blodwyn Pig.

A skaterdater-surfin’ safari-watusi dancin’ beat!

Released at the crest of surf rock, Drums A Go-Go contains searing guitar work (just listen to “Casbah!”) – not to mention some of the most insanely indelible drum breaks – on record. Cut all analog!

While the title track hit #118 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in October of ‘65, Nelson’s instrumental versions of “Whittier Blvd.” (by Thee Midnighters), “I Like It Like That” (by Pete Rodriguez), “Wooly Bully” (by Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs) and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” (by the Rolling Stones) are equally as vibrant and incorporate both fuzzy guitars and rock ‘n’ roll sax, a combination that not only shows the direction music was going, but the pre-psychedelicized style of popular teen beat groups during the mid ‘60s.

Nelson’s dynamic, catchy playing allows the drums to intertwine uniquely with the melody, giving a full, complete sound to the album – despite not having any vocals! Give it a spin, and get to groovin’ - it’s sure to inspire your next hodad hang out!

Interwoven Hammond organ riffs, heavy electric guitar and melodic bass lines give Nucleus an edge – their odd time signatures make it an aural lobotomy! Pressed on white vinyl!

The origins of Nucleus lay in late ‘60s Toronto combo The Lords Of London. They were a popular live attraction and appeared at the Canadian National Exhibition alongside The Guess Who and Kensington Market, as well as US bands like Moby Grape.

Though they had minor Canadian hits, a US breakthrough never came, and by September 1968 they were evolving into a different sort of act. Having changed their name to Nucleus and adopted a jazzier, more improvisational approach in daylong rehearsals, they recorded their sole LP with all original songs.

Their sound ranges from the deranged “Jenny Wakes Up” to the intense “Communication.” Issued in April 1969 (its release having been briefly delayed by what Billboard described as 'a technical complication'), the album attracted considerable cult interest, with the single version of “Communication” receiving heavy underground airplay.

Psychedelic rock from Minneapolis psych madmen Jokers Wild! Includes all of their rare singles, plus 15 more originally unreleased mind-melting cuts - complete with slide whistle!

When looking through the amount of outta-this-world acid-tinged, garage and psychedelic rock that came out of Minneapolis during the 1960s, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to assume that there was something in the water. Their sound was unlike any other Minneapolis ‘60s band – a true feat during that time.

Though the band began playing more local gigs during the early part of 1967, it wasn’t until May that they recorded their slide-flute-farfisa-organ infused psych wonderment, “All I See Is You / I Just Can’t Explain It.” The single was recorded at the famed Kay Bank Studios (where groups like The Trashmen, Vaqueros, Readymen, Castaways and many, many more laid down tracks) but received very little airplay. Their second single featured “Echo” as the A-side, and it’s equally as fun, bringing a ? and The Mysterians-esque farfisa beat behind a driving, delightfully fuzzy bass and guitar. Like their first single, it didn’t go anywhere. The lack of budget really hurt the band, and with too many bills to pay, they weren’t able to recoup on recording costs. Poof… it ended up sitting on the shelf.

The remnants of their unfinished album can be heard here, along with unreleased material, a cover of the Hollies’ “Have You Ever Loved Somebody,” and three of their limited release singles, “All I See Is You/I Just Can’t Explain It,” “Peace Man/Tomorrow,” and “Because I’m Free/Sunshine.” Catchy yet complex, tune out and turn on to this unsung Twin Cities garage-psych treasure and prepare to Step Outside Your Mind.

Sandy seemed to be in the eye of the kaleidoscopic tornado that was swirling and twirling around L.A. … so why didn’t these songs surface all those years ago? It certainly wasn’t for lack of talent, nor was it disinterest. In fact, it was quite the opposite. While in the Millennium, Sandy continued to write and record his own songs. After signing a publishing deal with Four Star Music, his new publisher did place a few of his songs - “Rag Doll Boy,” recorded by Thee Prophets and The Naked Truth; Terry Black recorded a version of “Wishing Star,” and “These Are The Children” and “Goodbye Yesterday” made an appearance on Tommy Roe’s sixth album, Phantasy.

But for all of the songs he composed and recorded on his reel-to-reel tape machine in his small, Sunset Strip apartment, it seemed as if Four Star Music wasn’t truly interested in promoting his songs. But in truth, it was an under-the-table handshake between Curt Boettcher and Four Star Music that squashed all hope of other artists hearing and recording Sandy’s songs.

The songs on this album are a few of many compositions Sandy wrote and recorded between 1966 and 1968. With only one or two exceptions, every instrument, lead vocal and layered harmony is his, and as you will hear, it’s really no wonder that Curt had them hidden away. Taken from the original reel-to-reel tapes, dive into Sandy Salisbury’s sparkling world of sunshine pop.

The lost tapes have surfaced, bringing with them a walloping new stereo mix! A sonic cocktail of acid garage, blues & psych rock from one of Detroit’s finest – featuring Ted Nugent! Dominated by gritty head-swirlers and heavy, fuzz guitar licks, their debut is considered to be an early innovator of heavy metal. Their five and a half minute version of “Baby Please Don’t Go” is an absolute acid garage classic with some fantastic feedback and great guitar sustain. Nugent creates some serious guitar noise on this number and shows off his brilliant chops. The album closes with another garage classic, “Gimme Love.” This song has some laser fuzz guitar riffs and angry Mike Drake vocals. In between these two garage monsters are many other great compositions. There are a few covers, two work really well (the splendidly bluesy “Let’s Go Get Stoned” and the gritty Who cover “It’s Not True”). They also hit real hard with “Colors,” a furious acid rock song with some sinister soloing. “Phillip’s Escalator” is very Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd with brit vocals, clanging chords and first class guitar scrape. It’s a true classic on this exceptional outing. The guitar freakouts, Who-like energy and great songs make this debut a prime slice of early Detroit rock. – The Rising Storm

The Trashmen's defining moment, 1963's "Surfin' Bird," is perhaps the ultimate lightning-in-a-bottle record. Their first true studio recording, it captures the group's interminable energy and mastery of live performance. But it also is the culmination of spirit and experiment that turned it into something new and, from the perspective of 50 years, unique. This collection shows them to be variously a first-rate surf band, a great protopunk outfit, solid rockers with the raw essence of the earliest originators of the sound, and adept enough to work in some comedy and country. This scope of ability and interest is probably the true basis of the band's following now. But "Surfin' Bird" has more tenacity than other bands' entire better-performing catalogs, and with it, the Trashmen created a work that is arguably today the most relevant release from that storied decade.

This freakbeat jelly belly delight showcases the Bandits’ vaudeville humor, garage rock & catchy psychedelic pop! Considered a cult classic, this mixed bag of candy-coated fuzz is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth! Our favored stereo mix, pressed on yellow vinyl! Newburgh, New York psych-punks the Jelly Bean Bandits formed in 1966. Originally known as “The Mirror,” the band regularly packed area nightspots like the local Trade Winds, Poughkeepsie's Buccaneer Nightclub, and Burlington, Vermont's Red Dog. In due time, they recorded a three-song demo reel that resulted in a three-album recording contract with Mainstream Records – however, unknown to Mainstream, these three songs represented the sum total of the Jelly Bean Bandits' repertoire, forcing the band to write enough additional material to flesh out a full-length LP in the course of a week. Amazingly, their eponymous 1967 debut is excellent, a freakbeat cult classic distinguished by emotive guitar and some innovative production techniques – all the more impressive, the album was recorded in a single 12-hour stretch. Mainstream hated the end result, however, and dropped the Jelly Bean Bandits just as they were commencing work on the follow-up – only one song was completed before the sessions were aborted, leaving just one ‘60s studio album from these confectionary con-artists. – Jason Ankeny

Flower power psych pop that’ll blow you away! Exploring the jangly folk and garage sounds of the late ‘60s, the Superfine Dandelion picks a wide variety of colorful folk, country and jug band influences and puts a psychedelic tint on their all-original compositions. Our favored stereo mix, pressed on blue vinyl! Formed in 1967, this Phoenix, AZ band would only last for a year before parting ways, leaving behind just one album – a fate many Mainstream artists ultimately faced, no matter how quality their style and sound was. The Superfine Dandelion features Mike McFadden (formerly of the garage rockin’ Mile Ends) and Rick Anderson (founding member of the Tubes) showcasing the sound of the Summer of Love – kaleidoscopic, sunny & groovy! “While the cheeriest cuts have the sunny folk-pop/rock feel of, say, some of the L.A. folk-rock issued by the Dunhill label (‘Don't Try to Call Me’ recalls P.F. Sloan) or the Monkees, their self-titled LP had a good deal of sub-Jefferson Airplane folk-psych-rock, with plenty of minor chords, harmonies, and wistful lyrics. Then ‘Janie's Tomb’ and ‘It's Raining’ have a jokey jug band vibe, like a cross between the Charlatans and the Lovin' Spoonful.” – Richie Unterberger (AllMusic)

Phenomenal ‘60s garage from Minnesota’s Gestures!

Along with a few other Twin Cities chart toppers, The Gestures’ “Run, Run, Run” became a national hit and even earned a spot on Kaye’s legendary Nuggets compilation in 1972. Full of shimmering guitars, opulent harmonies, and good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll, the band was limited to a handful of singles before going their separate ways. Here you’ll find a full LP’s worth of Gestures on vinyl, all killer no filler!

In California, the Gestures were especially well-received, maybe because “Run, Run, Run” had the lightness, the hook, and infectious drive of the California surf and car band hits. Record World’s hot picks column called it a surf-like sound that should endear them to teens. The slice is a hard-driving ditty. Cash Box said the Gestures bow was a hard-rock- ing, Liverpool-sounding affair... powerhouse instrumental support on this haunting entry. There’s a complete change of pace in the soft-sounding uptempo undercut.

“‘Run, Run, Run’ hit #1 in the Twin Cities, #3 in Los Angeles, #1 in New York and #3-5 in Oklahoma City. It reached the top of the local C&N Sales jukebox charts, cracked Billboard Magazine’s top 40, and as I mentioned before, was even played on Bandstand. It was right up there with records by the Hondells, Gene Pitney, Jay & the Americans, and all the early British bands – including the Beatles.”
