After having released their two first albums In Silence (1981) and Small Mercies (1983) on the Norwegian indie label Uniton, Fra Lippo Lippi decided to finance and release their next album, Songs, themselves. This found them taking up a bank loan before heading off to Abba's Polar Studio in Stockholm. If the evolution from the Joy Division/The Cure elements of In Silence to the keyboard based Small Mercies was a big step, the same can be said about the further development leading up to Songs, the most obvious aspect being a stronger focus on catchy tunes and more structured songs. Although the acoustic piano was a key part of Small Mercies, it was even more evident on Songs, especially as the original recording was completely without guitars. This gave the album a personal signature at a time that favoured digital synths and gadgets. Songs was released on their own Easter Productions label in 1985 and sold a respectable 5000 copies in Norway alone without marketing or singles, receiving a large amount of critical homage and ending up at the top of many album of the year polls. The album was picked up by Virgin UK, and with a brand new song and some added guitar to a couple of tracks, it was released internationally in 1986 to great acclaim both in the UK and elsewhere. However, what we have here is the original edition from 1985. Next up (FLL by now a duo of Kristoffersen and Sorensen) would be Light and Shade (1987), recorded in Los Angeles with Walter Becker from Steely Dan in the production chair. After parting company with Virgin, they released two more studio albums, The Colour Album in 1989 and Dreams in 1991. The band describe themselves as a spaced out, instrumental loungerock outfit, with added vibes of folk music, jazzy surf, psychedelia, free improvised chill-out, jangly post-rock and travelling bass. Not much for us to add here, apart from possibly a pinch of krautrock. "Tellus" is the quartet's fourth album, and their debut on Rune Grammofon. Being something of an allstar team from the fertile psychedelic spacedrone scene in Haugesund on the westcoast of Norway, the members also pay their dues in bands like Electric Eye, Lumen Drones (ECM), Undergrünnen and The Low Frequency in Stereo, whose album "Futuro" we released back in 2009. On "Tellus" they are joined by Sigbjorn Apeland, a much esteemed musician largely operating in a landscape of folk music, church music and improvisation. He is a member of Nils Okland band (ECM and Hubro) and has collaborated with him for 30 years, also appearing on his two albums for Rune Grammofon; Straum (2000) and Bris (2004). Also appearing on "Tellus" is Ståle Liavik Solberg, a central force on Oslo's thriving improvised music scene. He has performed worldwide with numerous Norwegian and international musicians and curates the excellent Blow Out! festival. With "Tellus" ATS heads into the Hardangervidda (the big plains connecting the eastern and western parts of southern Norway) terrain of wide open spaces, spare vegetation and unruly weather conditions, especially during the winter. As David Fricke Pointed Out In His Liner Notes To "Q", The Previous Album From This Expanded Edition Of Krokofant, This Is Not Just Another Novelty Guest-Project. In Fact, All The Involved Were So Happy After Finishing "Q" That A Follow-Up Was Decided Upon Straight Away. So Here It Is, With Four New Tunes From Guitarist And Leader Tom Hasslan, Each Clocking In Between Eight And Twelve Minutes. Originally A Guitar And Drums Duo, Tom And Axel Met In A Guitar Shop In Kongsberg, A Town In Southern Norway Famous For Its Annual Jazz Festival Since 1964, And Recognised For Its Experimental And Innovative Profile. In a world where being loud seems to be the only ticket for attention, Arve Henriksen has somewhat quietly and without much ado established himself as an important, major player on the European jazz scene. In his 20 years with Rune Grammofon we're counting 11 solo albums (including one for ECM) and 12 albums with Supersilent (including two for Smalltown Supersound), in addition to four albums with Food as well as numerous collaborations, far too many to mention here. During these years he has also performed quite extensively in Europe, in later years being more picky, often preferring more unique venues and locations. Consisting of unreleased material from around ten years back and up until 2019, "The Timeless Nowhere" is not a compilation in the traditional sense, but can still be seen as a career overview including many facets of his work, at the same time portraying an artist on an unstoppable quest for discovery through exploration. Indeed, these are also four individual albums that could easily have justified separate releases, but at this stage in Arve's artistic journey it also made perfect sense to assemble them as a box set. The common denominator is about inspiration drawn from composers, collaborators, new discoveries and more specifically; spontaneous interaction with other musicians without other purposes than the music itself. No talk, no demands, no intentions, no explaining; just music in a timeless nowhere. "Captured Under Mountainsides" points to the wild landscape scenery of the area where Arve grew up in the western part of Norway; overwhelming and often strikingly beautiful, but also isolated and with a sense of melancholy. "Acousmograph" is Arve on his own, inspired by compositions and musicians, more experimental in nature and partly based on sketch recordings in odd locations. Sidsel Endresen and Stian Westerhus' debut recording from 2012, Didymoi Dreams (RCD 2131 CD), was awarded with a much-deserved Norwegian Grammy (Spellemannpris) and was applauded across the borders, with the Guardian concluding about it's "power, originality and fearlessness" and the BBC calling it "an enthralling listen." While Didymoi Dreams was a concert recording, Bonita is a live-in-the-studio recording, necessarily so because this is all improvised. Not that it's easy to spot any major differences in that respect, anyone who have experienced this duo on stage can testify about their unique and telepathic musical dialogues, seemingly without the need to even look at each other. Whether on a stage or in a studio, their sound world is magical, mysterious, beautiful and frightening, all underpinned by the evocative song titles. Sidsel Endresen is one of the leading vocal improvisers in the world and has worked as a professional singer and songwriter since the '80s. In 1990 and 1994 she recorded two solo albums for ECM. The '90s also saw a very fruitful collaboration with Bugge Wesseltoft, resulting in three albums and two more Grammys. Since 2000, she has done solo projects, written film music and collaborated further with international and Norwegian artists such as Helge Sten, Christian Wallumrud, Rolf Wallin, Jan Bang and Hekon Kornstad. She has toured all over the world, written music for several theater and dance perfomances and has been festival composer for the jazz festivals in Bergen and Molde. And these are only some of her credentials. Stian Westerhus is a musician challenging and stretching the limits of his instrument beyond the normal confines of the electric guitar, balancing raw expressiveness against virtuosity and melodic instinct. He has been called the hardest working (jazz) musician in Norway, always on the road, in the studio or working on yet another project. Lately his main priorities, aside from the duo with Sidsel Endresen, have been his solo career and his new "rock" group Pale Horses. A few years ago he also toured as a member of Nils Petter Molver's trio and did a commission work for Molde International Jazz Festival that included names like Maja Ratkje, Mats Gustafsson, Kjetil Muster, Ola Kvernberg and Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. With Maternity Beat, Hedvig Mollestad has surpassed herself, most significantly as a composer and arranger, and delivered her magnum opus so far. And with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra she found the perfect ensemble to perform it. They have a long tradition for collaborations like this, we can mention Chick Corea, Jason Moran and Marius Neset among many others. And as always, Hedvig truly shines as a guitarist. Maternity Beat is Hedvig's third "solo" album. It was commissioned by Molde International Jazz Festival and premiered in July 2020, later the same year streamed at London Jazz Festival. The recording took place in Athletic Sound in Halden in October 2021. Since she received the festival's talent price in 2009 and signed to Rune Grammofon the following year, we have had the great pleasure to release seven albums by her trio as well as two solo albums, all receiving wide international acclaim in both jazz and rock camps. To complete the circle, Hedvig has been chosen as next year's Artist in Residence at the festival, a most prestigious institution in Norwegian jazz, held by John Zorn this year and initiated by Chick Corea in 2000 and Pat Metheny in 2001. "Who Do You Love The Most?" is the young trio's third album in just over four years, and continues in the tradition of their two previous efforts; beautiful and evocative melodies, rich on harmonies, often rhythmically complex textures and a typically folk-like Scandinavian character with the occasional gospel feel. The album's 10 songs are all Mulelid originals, except for a gripping cover of Judee Sill's The Archetypical Man. Two of the originals are the trio's versions of songs that first appeared on the pianist's much lauded solo piano album ("Piano") from last year. Kjetil André Mulelid (31) comes across as an exceptionally mature pianist and composer. The trio's 2017 debut "Not Nearly Enough To Buy A House" received wide international acclaim, with writers most typically mentioning Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans. The praise continued for 2019's follow-up "What You Thought Was Home", with the Jazz Journal giving it a 5/5 rating and calling it "some of the most captivating music I've heard in quite some while". All About Jazz noted the maturity of the work, feeling like coming from three well-seasoned pros. Mulelid grew up in the small village of Hurdal, and started playing the piano when he was nine, after hearing Chopin on the stereo. Later he did a bachelor degree in jazz performance at NTNU in Trondheim, blessed with top teachers such as Erling Aksdal, Vigleik Storaas and Espen Berg. He is also a member of jazz quartet Wako. Bjorn Marius Hegge (33) has been making waves on the Norwegian jazz scene lately, with his quintet's debut album "Hegge" winning a Norwegian Grammy. In 2021, nyMusikk's annual festival of sound, "Only Connect", commissioned an interpretation from I LIKE TO SLEEP of the first movement of Olivier Messiaen's Turangalila symphony. A project which initially led to a 15-minute piece performed at the festival, with the trio re-writing the music of Messiaen, but also rewriting the music of their own. Messiaen as a reference and compositional tool may be heard in the album for those really listening for references. With "Sleeping Beauty" the trio also explore even heavier riffs than before, seasick grooves and tempi, and deeper ambient soundscapes. Through extensive improvisation, the effects and processing of the sounds are way more extreme than before, almost awakening the sleeping beauty. During the pandemic, the band also had to find new ways to write music without the presence of every member, introducing the vibe-samples from the old Mellotron sound gallery to the band. Quarantillity, one of the themes which appears several times throughout the album - almost used in a similar way as the flower theme in the Turangalila symphony - is a direct result of sitting alone in quarantine, playing the Mellotron while listening to vibraphone extraordinaire Bobby Hutcherson. This theme could also be seen as a continuation of the previous album tracks named Pause I & Pause II from "Bedmonster" (2017) and "Daymare" (2020). Like "Daymare", "Sleeping Beauty" was recorded in Duper Studio in Bergen, co-produced with the band's all-time favourite sound wizard Jorgen Træen. It is also mixed and mastered by Træen, making the music sound as brutal, intense and intimate as experiencing I LIKE TO SLEEP in a live setting. Håvard Nordberg Funderud - guitar and 12-string guitar Lauritz Heitmann Skeidsvoll - saxophone Martin Heggli Mellem - drums Karl Erik Hornsdalsveen - double bass Henriette Eilertsen - flute Back in 2020, Kafé Hærverk, Oslo's live hotspot for a wide range of jazz and experimental music invited Master Oogway to do monthly concerts from August to December, bringing along a guest for each occasion. Two had to be moved to 2021 due to Covid restrictions, but the other three were recorded for possible use later. Initially we thought about doing a "best of" from all of the recordings, but after further listening it soon dawned on us that the concert with Henriette was nothing less than magical. To make room for the 45 minute vinyl edition, we had to drop one of the five pieces that were played on the night, and also make two minor edits. Other than that, this is what was played, there are no overdubs or cosmetic treatments. The album was brilliantly mixed in Athletic Sound by Dag Erik Johansen. Henriette Eilertsen (28) is part of the fertile and exciting environment around the Motvind label, and a member of Billy Meier and Andreas Roysum Ensemble. She released her solo debut "Poems For Flute" on Motvind in 2021.Håvard Nordberg Funderud (28) finished his bachelor at the Norwegian Academy of Music in 2018 and also studied in Gothenburg and Copenhagen. He is involved in several projects, Master Oogway being his priority. Lauritz Lyster Skeidsvoll (28) and Karl Erik Horndalsveen (27) are both educated from the same academy in Oslo as Håvard, while Martin Heggli Mellem (25) is educated from the jazz program at NTNU in Trondheim."Happy Village" is Master Oogway's third album, their second on Rune Grammofon. Hedvig Mollestad must surely be one of the hardest working musicians on the Norwegian music scene at the moment, with "Tempest Revisited" being her third album in a mere 18 months, all at a consistently high artistic level. Her first solo album, "Ekhidna" (2020), received a Spellemannpris (Norwegian Grammy), appeared on several jazz and rock best of the year lists and got her into Downbeat's "25 for the future" selection. "Tempest Revisited" draws lines back to 1998 and the very beginning of Rune Grammofon. This was the year we released "Electric", the collected electronic works of Arne Nordheim, one of Norway's greatest composers. It was also the year when parts of "The Tempest", possibly his most cherished and well-known work, was chosen to be performed at the opening of Parken, the new cultural house in Ålesund, birthplace of Hedvig Mollestad. To celebrate 20 years, the culture house was ready for a new storm, and the first name that came to them was Hedvig, a local artist that was already making waves on the international scene with her power-trio. Hedvig took inspiration from the front of the house, adorned with Nordheim's score for "The Tempest", at the same time making a direct connection to the sometime heavy weather conditions of this coastal area in the northwest part of Norway. One could say it's a big paradox that over all this might be Hedvig's most lyrical and less aggressive collection of music. On the other hand it's quite a dynamic record, lots of light and shade and enough sonic parts at work to evoke the elements, the mighty Gran Cassa drum only one of them. The music included here was adapted from the initial performance in 2018 and produced by Hedvig in the studio the following year for this album release. The musicians included are old friends Marte Eberson from the Ekhidna band, Ivar Loe Bjornstad from her trio and Trond Frones (Red Kite) on bass as well as three sax players.

In 1970, Svein Finnerud Trio (As They Were Then Named), Released "Plastic Sun", Still One Of The Most Iconic Albums In Norwegian Jazz. Their Second Album, Issued On The Sonet Label In An Eye Catching, Psychedelic Gatefold Sleeve, Attracted Due Attention From The More Curious Sections Of The Rock Audience. The Same Year Would See The Only Release From Another Great Crossover Trio, Min Bul, Sharing The Same Rhythm Section Of Andresen And Rud, This Time With Guitarist Terje Rypdal As The Leader (It's Fair To Assume That Andresen And Rud Would Strongly Oppose To The Thought Of Anyone Being The Leader, Though...). Although "Plastic Sun" Would Mark The Beginning Of A Very Fruitful Period In Norwegian Jazz, With Jan Garbarek And Terje Rypdal Releasing Strong Ecm Debuts The Following Year, It Was Probably Dawning On The More Commercially Oriented Sections Of The Record Business That The Sales Didn't Exactly Hit The Roof. Thus, When It Was Time For A Follow-Up In 1974, The Already Recorded "Thoughts" Was Shelved Due To Lack Of Funding And Potential Labels Getting Cold Feet. It Wasn't To Be Released Until 1985, On Henie Onstad Art Center's In-House Prisma Label. The Center Was Like A Home To The Trio, They Played Concerts There And "Thoughts" Was Actually Recorded At The Center. Hoac Always Had A Special Connection With The More Experimental Music Scenes Right From The Opening In 1968, With Groups And Artists Like Soft Machine, Henry Cow, John Cage, Terry Riley, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Arne Nordheim And Many Others Performing. Finnerud And Andresen Were Close Friends Since Youth And Formed The Trio In 1967 After Approaching Rud With The Clear Intention Of Leaving "Swing", As They Called It, And Go In A More Avant Garde Direction. Their Self-Titled Debut Album Was Released The Following Year, But It Was Always The Live Situation That Was Their Natural Habitat, With Concerts Often Being More Like Performance Art Or Happenings. They Had Several Projects Going With Poets, Writers, Painters And Contemporary Composers...

In May 2018 Hedvig received an invitation from Vossajazz - the much loved annual festival established in 1973 - to write the commission work for 2019. This came at the right time, she had been thinking about writing for a bigger group than the trio, and this would be a good opportunity. To make it suitable for album release the full festival version was edited, sharpened and recorded from scratch in Amper Tone studio in Oslo. And this stunning album is the result! In addition to Hedvig on guitar, the line-up includes powerhouse drummer Torstein Lofthus (Elephant9) and percussionist Ole Mofjell, the youngest member, but with solid experience from the European improvisation scene. Keyboard duties are handled by Marte Eberson, probably most known from her five years with Highasakite, and Erlend Slettevoll (The Core and supergroup Grand General, Rune Grammofon 2013). Hedvig first met trumpeter Susana Santos Silva in Mats Gustafsson's NU-ensemble. This three women, three men lineup defies the general notion of progressive jazz as being a typically male activity. Maybe this is why it's so multifaceted, rich on textures and melodically strong? Being the riffmeister Hedvig truly is, she has of course found room for some really strong ones, as well as some subtle and powerful soloing.

Håvard Nordberg Funderud - guitar Lauritz Lyster Skeidsvoll - saxophone Karl Erik Horndalsveen - double bass Martin Heggli Mellem - drums It is with great pleasure we can introduce a new name to our roster. Master Oogway are four young musicians aged between 23 and 26. They met at the Norwegian Academy of Music in 2015 with a common desire to play vibrant, improvised music with strong themes and room for spontaneity at a high energy level. Like many players on the young, Norwegian progressive jazz scene their instrumental skills are already highly developed but never used to show off. "Earth And Other Worlds" is the quartet's second album, their debut was released on the Clean Feed label in 2018. Their new effort is more dynamic and varied and shows more mature and accomplished songwriting, not to mention the stronger group interactions and the impressive solo stretches from sax player Skeidsvoll and guitarist/composer Funderud. While it's fair to say that they operate in much of the same musical landscape as Bushman's Revenge or Kokofant, it's equally fair to note that their general approach and attitude comes with a slightly stronger emphasis on jazz. Håvard Nordberg Funderud finished his bachelor at the Norwegian Academy of Music in 2018 and has also studied in Gothenburg and Copenhagen. He is involved in several projects, but Master Oogway is his priority. Lauritz Lyster Skeidsvoll and Karl Erik Horndalsveen have both finished their education at the same academy as Funderud. Martin Heggli Mellem is currently finishing his bachelor at the jazz program at NTNU in Trondheim.

Original score by Krzysztof Penderecki. New reading and conduction by Mats Gustafsson. The first (and until now only?) recorded interpretation of Krzysztof Penderecki's "Actions For Free Jazz Orchestra" took place in 1971 at Donaueschingen and featured the New Eternal Rhythm Orchestra, assembled by Don Cherry for the occasion and conducted by the great Polish composer. That orchestra also consisted of 14 musicians, including international jazz heavyweights such as Kenny Wheeler, Peter Brötzmann, Thomasz Stanko, Terje Rypdal, Han Bennink and others. Don Cherry himself did not perform. Penderecki had heard the Globe Unity Orchestra a couple of years earlier and was fascinated by the possibilites of working with musicians from a different background and with other perspectives than he was used to from the classical world. The challenge for all involved was to find the right balance between composition and improvisation. The idea was initially met with some scepticism from the musicians, but this soon gave way to acceptance and even eagerness. The new, extended reading by Mats Gustafsson and Fire! Orchestra was commissioned by the Sacrum Profanum festival in Kraków, Poland in 2018. The idea was to place this classic piece in a contemporary setting, with a new approach and a new body of sound. However, the original score was used as a platform for the new reading, connecting history with the present. A score in this context is most often of a graphic nature to present reference points, visualized on the sleeve by Kim Hiorthoy's cut-up adaption of Mats Gustafsson's score. It's also worth noticing that the instrumentation is more or less identical to that of 1971, the main difference being a tuba replacing one of the trombones. Finally, this new reading clocks in at 40 minutes, and is thus considerably longer than the 1971 version. This line-up of the Fire!
