Look Blue Go Purple rose, as so many Dunedin groups of the time did, from the roil of post-punk activity in the early 1980s. They were friends with, and sometimes girlfriends of, prominent members of the rising new groups. "[It was] an amazing pool of amazing people who just played music. And welcomed anyone who wanted to play music. We were a social group as well," LBGP bass player Kathy Bull (now Francisca Griffin) told Auckland student radio station 95bFM in 2012. An early shuffling of the pack saw Lesley Paris drumming with The Neanics and Craven A's with boyfriend Terry Moore, David Kilgour and Peter Gutteridge. "We had a kind of Velvet Underground thing going on. I'd always loved Maureen Tucker's drumming," Lesley Paris recalled to academic Ian Chapman in Kiwi Rock Chicks, Pop Stars & Trailblazers in 2010. Finally all three EPs have been released together as one double gatefold LP with six additional live recordings of previously unreleased tracks.

Shayne Carter and John Collie formed Straitjacket Fits in in 1986 after the demise of the Doublehappys and were joined by Andrew Brough and David Wood. The reissue of Hail is deeply tinged with sadness following the recent loss of Andrew Brough; gifted songwriter and guitarist of not only Straitjacket Fits, but also Bike and Dunedin band The Blue Meanies. Andrew's musical impact is undeniable and it's unimaginable to think of a world without his contributions to New Zealand music.Straitjacket Fits' debut release, the Life In One Chord EP appeared in 1987 and the album Hail was released in 1988. Both were recorded at The Lab in Auckland with Terry Moore (from The Chills). "[The songs] `Hail' and `Grate' suggested a monolithic guitar monster future and, while that is part of what can be found on Hail, there is a remarkable diversity of song and sound on show. The oft-described Shayne Carter/Andrew Brough duality of sour/hard and sweet/soft is a simplified observation of what is a much deeper and richer stew of ideas and sounds." reflects Flying Nun Records founder, Roger Shepherd.Hail is an album that beautifully showcases the many strengths of Straitjacket Fits in the early part of their development. It is a record full of furious off-piste guitaring and startling vocals anchored by a granite hard rhythm section but that also showcases gentler melodic material including a cover of Leonard Cohen's `So Long Marianne'. But generally the songs are more experimental in nature with a considerable range of material from Andrew Brough's standout `Fabulous Things' to the vigorous guitar noise of Shayne Carter's `Grate'.Hail is a documentation of a band on the up, a band flexing its potential and oozing confidence and optimism. With Hail the Straitjacket Fits were well on their way to giving the rock `n' roll thing their very best shot.

Foothills is the 10th full-length album of The Bats. Spanning the last 38 years, The Bats have clocked nine incredible albums; each one seeing the band evolve with new material from the prolific songwriting hand of Robert Scott. Add to that tally the extra singles, b-sides, EPs, compilations and tribute songs they've recorded, creating a succinct setlist is a nearly impossible task. Foothills was recorded in Spring 2018 at a country retreat pop-up studio. At that time, 15 songs were captured and immortalised in the Canterbury foothills of the Southern Alps, Aotearoa (New Zealand). Only too well, The Bats know the possibilities, potentialities and sonic vistas that arise when one takes the reins for the recording process in a beautiful place that's on home turf. Robert Scott, on the making of Foothills has said "Time marches on... finally, we found a gap in our busy lives and chose a week to convene. We found a house that is usually inhabited by ski field workers _ Kowai Bush, near Springfield about an hour west of Christchurch and of course nestled in the foothills of the mighty Southern Alps. The songs had been written, demo'd and arranged for some time, but still with a little room for trying things out in the studio. Many carloads arrived at the house, full of amps guitars and recording gear, we set up camp and soon made it feel like home; coloured lights, a log fire, and home cooked meals in the kitchen. We worked fast, and within a few days had all the basic backing tracks done, live together in one room, the way we like to do it - it's all about `the feel' for songs like ours." The Bats must hold a record in New Zealand (perhaps the whole world, once The Rolling Stones throw in the towel) as a band that has survived with the same line-up for 38 years. No split ups, no reforming for nostalgia's sake. So far, half the band have spots in The New Zealand Music Hall Of Fame, vocalist/ guitarist Robert Scott (The Clean) and bassist/producer Paul Kean (Toy Love), and it's only a matter of time before lead guitarist Kaye Woodward and drummer Malcolm Grant find themselves in there too. The four-piece has created twisted wistful folk, psychedelic rock, bouncy twee pop, and everything in between, but whatever the genre, their sound is always distinctively, unmistakably The Bats.
