Liquid Liquid loom large for many - their classic run of EPs on 99 Records has gotten a second, third, and fourth life thanks to devout fans like the Beastie Boys, LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, and Domino's Laurence Bell. (This to say nothing of the fact that one of rap's all time classics - Melle Mel's "White Lines" - is based around their song "Cavern.) This new double a-side single from Murphy's own DFA features a torrential version of "Bellhead" he co-produced in 2004 alongside a completely new version of the Liquids classic "Optimo" by Glaswegian party crew Optimo (Espacio).

In the discourse around new albums from singular, world-building artists, the phrase "a big step forward" can often be a blinking red warning sign. You know you're about to be pulled somewhere new against your will. Inertia is a hell of a thing. It's nice here. Surely, the party's not over yet?JJULIUS' Vol. 3 album is a big step forward, or a step up, out of the murky basement of the preceding two volumes. There's no time to acclimate. A spindly violin grabs you by the hand and pulls you into the pastoral bounce of "Brinna ut," which, in spite of its meaning ("Burn out"), creates the kind of blind positivity and warm stomach feeling less cynical people might find in self-help seminars. For us, we have records like this. And, inertia be damned, Vol. 3 has charm like a balm.JJULIUS records have always arrived like meteors from another planet, an impression hammered home by the fact that they're titled like compendiums of artifacts. And while Vols. 1 and 2 carried that notable tinge of darkness, Vol. 3 has (almost!) cast that shadow, adding elements of disco ("Dödsdisco") and dream-pop ("Etopisk hallucination") to his forever favorites Arthur Russell, African Head Charge, and The Fall. Some of that new car smell could be attributed to a change in process. Each song was written over beats played by Tor Sjödén of the wild-eyed Stockholm group Viagra Boys, beats that were themselves inspired by tracks from the likes of Patrick Cowley, CAN, Count Ossie, Black Devil Disco Club and others that Julius would send to him as inspiration.Unless you're Mark E. Smith, fervor fades. Eventually we all crave a lie down in some nice grass, a few minutes to gaze at the sky and wonder if everything is actually all that bad. Vol. 3 gives you 35 of those respiting minutes. "No looking back, no misery, no talking trash, no enemies."

The Days of Mars is the debut album from artists Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom. It was released on October 10, 2005. All the music was created by layering live takes of custom built synthesizers and other instruments."DFA duo skips stones across the same cosmic lake as forefathers Tangerine Dream, Terry Riley, and Mike Oldfield. (...) Still, in a landscape full of seen and unseen phenomena, where the unknown seems almost passé, Gonzalez and Russom make music for taking things in stride. By turns bleak and beautiful, this is music for a new, but vaguely familiar world." - Pitchfork

DFA is pleased to announce the long-awaited follow up to Marcus Marr's acclaimed 2013 single ?The Music?. a music obsessive all his life, Londoner Marcus Marr's first encounters with dance music were acid house records which augmented his vinyl collection of rock and soul, and attending all night parties under Brixton's St Matthews church. Traveling to the south of England to watch DJ Harvey play a lengthy set, he saw the kind of power a DJ can wield over a willing crowd.

Mermaid Chunky. It's all in a name, sometimes. The danceable, costumed, curiosity rich duo of artists Freya Tate and Moina Moin are as imaginative as they profess. Or, to get more to the point, as we all need them to be.Freya and Moina are two visual artists and musicians from Stroud and South London, places where they importantly found communities (Stroud's SVA and the capital's Total Refreshment Centre) of like minded people just as willing to chase down an idea to its possibly illogical conclusion. And it is in the collective and the idea of participation that Mermaid Chunky really clicks. This is a party, a collective dance, made all the better with more: people, ideas, layers, kick drums, recorders, saxophones, frogs. To wit, the album's first track and first single, "Céilí," named after a traditional Scottish or Irish social gathering and dance, which builds from a simple recorder line into a swelling, warm burst of major chord dance music. Goosebumps or check your pulse.Further down the rabbit hole, "Chaperone" is almost boardwalk electro, like Fischerspooner on a ferris wheel; "Frogsporn" and "Nature Girl" are mucky, trippy dirges filled with stalactites of synth and squelch; "Tiny Gymnast" is a kaleidoscopic waltz into the night. Hold onto your seats, ladies and gentlemen. You might be wondering how we, DFA Records, all the way over in cynical Brooklyn, entered the picture. There was a day a few years ago, sun shining in full Springtime splendor, when James heard something while waiting for a coffee down the street from the office. It sounded simple yet deceptively complex: a dance track, but one where the one - that anchoring first beat in a measure - could be heard a thousand different ways. Frustrated and interested, he Shazamd the song, playing at the shop from an episode of Zakia's Questing show on NTS, and brought it back to the office, where we all listened to it about fifty times. (The song was "Friends," from Mermaid Chunky's VEST EP, released in 2020. It led to an invitation to open fo...

Light Asylum's debut LP came out in 2012, atime before streaming really gained critical massand before vinyl came back in a big way. It wasa weird in-between era, like both the recent pastand ancient history.History has been kind to Light Asylum. For one, whatever limited vinyl copies were pressed inthe initial run fetch stupid prices on Discogs. Andthe critical shrug that welcomed its release nowseems irrelevant. This is top-notch, black-clad,spiritually punishing synth-pop, perfectly andcarefully programmed and soaring on the backof lead singer Shannon Funchess' superhumanvoice.Side A, with rampages like "IPC," is heavier andfaster than Side B, which opens with a slow, serene, goosebump-inducing track titled "AngelTongue" and finished with the near ecstatic "ACertain Per...

Montreal duo Essaie pas return to DFA with a 12-inch that picks up where their 2018 album New Path left off. "Earth" is a blistering ride through the rave, an amalgamation of techno and trance. The galloping bassline is the backbone of the song, and Marie Davidson's vocals climb to new heights against synth stabs. "Corps Étranger," with its stuttering percussion, is a slow burner in comparison. For the remix of "Earth," Marco Passarani of Tiger & Woods (Running Back, Numbers) doubles down on the Italo disco angle and doesn't shy away from the more anthemic moments of the original, managing to rework it into something akin to a celebration of this "shithole" we call Earth.

The Juan Maclean returns to DFA with a new 12" - last June's electro-disco "What Do You Feel Free About?" backed with "Zone Non Linear," which evokes early Pet Shop Boys. As usual, Juan's sunny productions and Nancy's layered vocals come together to lend a maximalist warmth to the dancefloor. Man Power (ESP Institute, Correspondant) gives the A-side a club rework with a dubbed out vocal arrangement that adds a touch more drama to the track, while Massimiliano Pagliara (Ostgut Ton, Robert Johnson) revitalizes tropes of old-school piano house.

After turning in a wall-shaking remix of Essaie pas last year, Romanian production duo Khidja present their first EP for DFA. These four tracks are deep, spooky heaters - think John Carpenter in the club, with industrial bass lines, frenetic melodies careening a bit out of control, and vocals echoing from the corners of the room. Their signature throb that runs along all four tracks, influenced by their time spent in underground scenes in Bucharest, London, and Berlin, as well as an emphasis on the jagged sounds of hardware. Having established themselves with previous releases on labels like Hivern Discs and Malka Tuti, Khidja get darker, dubbier, and more twisted on In The Middle Of The Night. We find the record in the witching hour, and the tracks represent the cycle of nighttime mentalities, revealing the various directions the mind can wander in the place between consciousness and unconsciousness - mania, paranoia, even boredom. It all makes for a raucous dancefloor experience, with the duo bringing something new and heavy to the DFA roster. RIYL: John Talabot, Severed Heads, Factory Floor, Front 242, Andrew Weatherall.

On March 29, Eric Copeland delivers Trogg Modal Vol. 2, the counterpart to last October's Vol. 1. The former Black Dice member's âÇÿFreakbeat 4/4' agenda gets further refined here - Vol. 2 is more laid-back than the first, but still highly danceable. Self-described as "late Night Flight proto tekno," the tracks pulse with thick layers of percussion, melodic fever dreams, and riffs wrung through a taffy puller. Eric's textured, off-the-cuff approach to dance music adds a refreshing element of spontaneity and âÇÿjamming' to a climate of uncanny smoothness and polish. Where Vol. 1 was composed of "rippers," Vol. 2 travels at its own pace, continuing to showcase Eric's ability to recontextualize 4/4 tracks as psychedelic contortions, from the squelchy vibrations of "BS Dropout" to the blithe, video arcade soundtrack "High Score Zed." Taken together, the two volumes of Trogg Modal showcase the versatility of one of the most continuously exciting experimental artists of the pas t twenty years - arriving in 2019 with his mischievous sense of adventure firmly intact.

NYC singer Amy Douglas makes her official DFA debut with "Never Saw It Coming," a limited release 12" single co-written and produced by Tim Wagner of 33Hz, with two remixes by Sheffield artist Crooked Man. With a five-octave range and a diverse background in performance, ranging from rock to soul to jazz, Douglas' voice is the heart of the song, lending heightened drama to the steady mechanical funk of Wagner's production. The two remixes by DFA artist Crooked Man let the track grow and build slowly with longer, lush arrangements, while his hypnotic dub doubles down on the woozy bassline and has Amy's vocals echoing out into the ether.Though this is Douglas' first release on the label, she is no stranger to the DFA roster. She is the voice behind "Happiness," the epic closing track on Crooked Man's self-titled 2016 LP, and also appears on the forthcoming Crooked Man album, due out on DFA this fall. Amy also works with Juan Maclean as one half of Peach Melb a, who have released singles on both DFA and Defected / Classic. Crooked Man's signature maximalist house sound has always been complemented by the support of strong female vocalists, and together the pair take each other's work to a new level for an impressive collaboration. Rumor has it they're currently working on more tracks togetherâ?¦ Lots of artists these days aim to 'reimagine' the sounds of disco, house, and soul, but Amy Douglas and Crooked Man are creating something all their own that pulls from the best of times past, while also looking decidedly forward.

DFA is proud to present the long-awaited debut EP by London's Marcus Marr, Familiar Five. Influenced by
classic soul, rock, disco, and acid house, the multi-instrumentalist, DJ, and producer makes spacy dance
music, often including percolating synths, funky bass guitar, and vocals. A regular at Berlin's famed
nightclub Berghain/Panorama Bar since 2014, the lifelong music obsessive's first encounters with dance
music were acid house records, which grew his vinyl collection of rock and soul, and attending all night
parties under Brixton's St Matthews Church. At last, Marr returns to DFA with a collection of elastic
bassline stompers, reminiscent of early Daft Punk. The title track Familiar Five originally began with a rock
riff, which he later repurposed as the backbone of a piece of slow, dark, dance music. Inspired by Dr.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Faust, and Kafka's Metamorphosis, Marr explains that he wanted to make something
spooky and simple - a song utilizing very few elem ents, with a throb and synth vomit. On the flip side,
lead single High Times channels the electric guitar stylings of Nile Rodgers circa 1979, and makes good
use of the producer's trademark whizzing synths as well as vocals from collaborator Nandi Bhebe. Love
Release and Rocketship are both equally effective tracks built for the dancefloor.

The Weeks Island project began in 2018 when, itching forsomething during a break from his gig playing guitar for theGrammy-winning Cajun group Lost Bayou Ramblers, JonnyCampos ventured to his bandmate's house and recorded a seriesof deep, amoebic, ambient pedal steel passages across twoafternoons. It wasn't all heavy, though: he paid that bandmate,Kirkland Middleton, in Cane's chicken strips. The tracks on Droste are named for bodies of water that nolonger exist, their names wiped from maps thanks to thedisintegrating shorelines of Southern Louisiana. That feeling ofimpermanence hangs over this record - the tracks don't so muchbegin and end as slip in and out of your consciousness. It can bea serene passive listen or a deep one that marinates long afterthe runout.Droste originally appeared on Nouveau Electric Records, run byanother Rambler, Louis Michot, in 2020, digitally and on cassette.DFA picked it up via an connection from LCD Soundsystem'sKorey Richey, and began a years-long process to cut the recordto vinyl, a task made difficult by the sharp pedal steel and wavesof harmonic distortion that color the music. After more than a fewtries and the addition of three brand new tracks, Bob Westonat Chicago Mastering Service nailed it, and it was pressedbeautifully at Furnace Record Pressing in Alexandria, VA.

James Murphy calls LCD Soundsystem drummerPat Mahoney the best lyricist in the group, thoughit's in Museum Of Love - Pat's band with DennisMcNany - where he actually steps out in front. This 7" is the MOLove's first material on DFAsince their debut album in 2014."After Us" is a simple, buyoant pop song heavilytempered by warnings of a bleak future. The oldsugar with the medicine approach."Look Of Disgust" is its perfect foil, a notty, almostindustrial sounding wind up that ends just like aslap in the face.

Fernando Pulichino's slinky, syrupy dancefloor records - all of which sit in a triple frontierdeath zone between rock, funk, and electronicsounds - have been cycling through DFA DJbags for years, so it was only a matter of timeuntil he made an official appearance on companyletterhead. The original version of "I Got, She's Got," whichappears here on B2, is a romping, scuzzed-out,howl-at-the-moon burner, but it's the remix (a littlemore clarity of purpose, a lot more arpeggios) thatreally goes and notched the A1 placement cut at45RPM. Sandwiched between the two is anotherinnocuous bomb, "She's Playing With Fire." Threetracks, all weapons, trust us.Written, produced, and performed by FernandoPulichino in Buenos Aires. Saxophone on "She'sPlaying With Fire" by Gustavo Buchiniz. Masteredand cut by Bob Weston at Chicago MasteringService. Pressed by Furnace Record Pressing inAlexandria, VA.

Infinity Machine is a duo comprised of JuanMacLean - as in the Juan MacLean, longtimeDFA traveler - and Gee Dee, also known as GregDroggitis, a producer and DJ based in Brooklynand 1/3 of the Earth Beat DJ troupe. The project name stems from a series ofgatherings the two began hosting in variousprivate spaces around New York City shortlyafter lockdown, though that description is abit innocuous for the journeys traveled by itsattendees. These events, billed as "psychedelic danceceremonies" lasting 8 or 9 hours, began witha sound meditation to vibrational and acousticinstruments before eventually segueing into a"dance" soundtracked by a DJ set from Juan andGreg.Something clicked - that ceremonial tea! - andso Juan and Greg began playing and recordingin their studio using the same approach:improvisation with equal attention placed ontraditional acoustic (flute, guitar, gong) and morecontemporary electronic (Yamaha DX-7) sounds. After awhile, there was literally three albumsworth of material, each of them a voyage into thewarm, liminal space between new age, ambient, drone and psychedelia. None of those genresquite fully describe what's across 001, 002, and003 - available from DFA digitally and on a verylimited run of cassettes (150 each!) - but if you'veread this far then you're either the right kind ofcurious or just forgot what you were doing.

Dickie Landry’s saxophones have challenged, soothed, and blown minds around the world in his lengthy career as a jazz and avant-garde blower of the highest regard. He was a founding member of the Phillip Glass Ensemble and (according to Wikipedia lore) introduced Paul Simon to zydeco, one of the indigenous sounds of his native southern Louisiana.

Rarely, though, does Dickie’s saxophone make you want to get up and dance like a crazy person.

Such is the effect of “Hang The Rich,” a nugget of slinky, ecstatic punk-funk that was until recently completely lost to the sands of time. Recorded in 1986 (or thereabouts) in New Orleans and featuring vocalist Evelyn Erhard, percussionist Billy Ware, drummer Ricky Sebastian and Dickie himself on saxophones and a Roland Jupiter 4 synthesizer, it’s the kind of song that compels you to move any which way you can, drunk on indignance and the power of satan’s music.

The track came to DFA via LCD Soundsystem’s Korey Richey, who knows Dickie from back home in Louisiana. After a lengthy search, we located the original tapes in a storage locker somewhere in the Southeast and finally were able to get a clean, quality transfer done here at DFA HQ.

From there, we only had one person in mind for a more DJ-friendly edit: Glasgow’s JD Twitch, one half of Optimo and a selector of similarly puckish spirit. Twitch’s ability to contextualize these older, skronkier sounds for a modern dancefloor are in full display on his version, which hits hard and jagged but then opens up into those ineffable rapturous moments.

"The revelation that you didn't need formal training to start a band in 1977 and the realization that you don't need to be Merce Cunningham to dance are one and the same." - Ryan Schreiber, Pitchfork, 2003. 47 minutes. Two sides. A single spine jacket. Confident and deliberate. Lightning in a bottle. The Rapture's Echoes was and is a clear-eyed kick in the teeth, a band at the peak of theirpowers and producers with an ambitious vision making. a. point. The whole "indie crowd finally learns to dance" narrative is overwrought and irrelevant in 2023 - perhaps context is no longer king - but what remains clear is that this album, made by a San Diego punk band who had moved to New York via Seattle, and produced by the DFA in their own studio, where time and gear and ideas both good and bad were aplenty, maintains an energy and search for catharsis that could bulldoze even themost uptight. For whatever reason, it has remained out of printon vinyl since its initial run. (Don't worry, though, there were a lot of CDR promos lying around.) And now, with minimal pageantry, it's back. Recut by Bob Weston, loud and clear.

One of Ireland’s finest and DFA mainstay Shit Robot returns to James Murphy’s legendary label, seven years after his last release for the New York heavy hitters. Four classic cuts from the twisted machine mind that is Shit Robot. Distinctively punk, daringly futuristic, with a driving heart that’s as warped as it is welcoming. Entrancing body music for basements and big rooms alike, featuring Suzi Horn (Prinzhorn Dance School) and Mutado Pintado (Warmduscher, Paranoid London) on vocals. Recorded in London with Al Doyle (Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem) and mixed by James Murphy for the DFA.
