Carter Family meets Addams Family in Easy Listening for Jerks, two new covers EPs by gold-certified prairie pickers The Dead South. The source material for the EP two-pack sees The Dead South trace very different musical lineages: one a beloved folk songbook and the other a set of volatile modern outsider anthems. Always playing against type, The Dead South flip traditional bluegrass and hard rock conventions upside down, drawing out an ominous, lurking unease in the bright innocence of Bristol Sessions-era sound, and pulling moments of absurdity and hilarity out from the hardcore bluster. Part II, inspired by the band's own pre-show playlist, includes songs by System of a Down, The Doors, Cold War Kids and The Misfits. The Dead South dust off "People Are Strange," shedding the lizard skin in favour of an MTV-Unplugged approach. On "Chop Suey," not a no-brainer for an acoustic band without a drummer, the band transcends the song's metal origins and doubles up on Scott Pringle's vocals for a sound as big as the first. Part II also sees the vocal debut of banjoist Colton "Crawdaddy" Crawford, who offers a deadpan rendition of Ween's "Help Me Scrape The Mucus Off My Brain." Easy Listening for Jerks are the first releases that see all four members taking lead vocal turns.

"Matterhorn," a gallant adventure tale that sees four friends set off to climb a mountain, also works on the level of The Dead South's origin story. "It's closer here to heaven than it is back to the ground," goes the song, now also a fitting encapsulation of the band's feelings of anxiety and exhilaration about returning to life on the road.

Barbarisms' fourth album "Zugzwang" is a spacious travelogue that traverses heartbreak, spiritual homelessness and the irresistibility of attempting to avoid your problems. The album name describes a situation in chess where a player is compelled to make a move, but no matter what move is made it will hurt them. The album is far more inviting than its name might suggest, it is an expansive affair, marking the band's warmest and darkest offering to date. It is a record for the lonesome and broken moments when quiet companionship and spirit lifting candour are most needed.Even with three albums released already ("Barbarisms" (2014), Browser (2016), West in the Head (2018)), both the writing and recording process for Zugzwang marked new territory for Barbarisms. Coming back together to record the album after Faraone had been touring solo in Canada and Europe, it was an opportunity to rediscover themselves as a band and in many ways come back to their first principles. Formed in Stockholm when two experienced Swedish musicians, Tom Skantze and Robin Af Ekenstam, met the prolific writer, but musically inexperienced, American Nicholas Faraone. "We found that when they played down to me and I played up to them interesting things tended to happen" says Faraone. While "Zugzwang" sees a mellowing of the more jangling arrangements found on previous records there is a greater focus on the conversation between music and lyrics. Built around live takes with voice and nylon string guitar at the centre, Skantze and Af Ekenstam play with sensitivity and restraint. While the songs describe a series of separations and feeling of uprootedness Farone's vocals are embraced by the harmonies of Swedish singers Alice Bowman and Simon Stahlhamre as well as Canadians Ellen Froese and Campbell Woods.

Yes We Mystic has been many things in its decade of existence. In the beginning, it was a group of high schoolers making music on borrowed instruments in a basement in Winnipeg, Manitoba; in a few short years it had become an internationally-touring musical powerhouse being praised as "art pop transformers" (Julijana Capone, BeatRoute Magazine) charged with a "fearless creative energy" (Exclaim!). By 2019, for the release of their sophomore album Ten Seated Figures, they had reinvented themselves as a performance art collective (an alternate version of the band played by artists and actors did interviews, starred in videos, and hosted live performances as the band prodded at the nature of memory). Shortly thereafter the band"s longtime rehearsal space, reborn as House of Wonders, became the beating heart of off-kilter indie music in Winnipeg as frontman Adam Fuhr became a sought-after producer-producing work from JayWood, Virgo Rising, Amos the Kid, Julien"s Daughter, among dozens more.
