Dzö-nga (zone-gah) is a black metal project formed in 2016 by multi-instrumentalist Cryvas. The band draws inspiration from world mythologies in creating genre-blending epics, imbuing a Cascadian black metal sound with classical music flair. Debut album Five Treasures of Snow explored the far reaches of ambient metal, with “simultaneously claustrophobic and unforgivingly exposing” songs about an otherworldly Himalayan ascent. 2017’s Upon the Shimmered Bough, a 15-minute art piece based on an original poem, introduced folk elements to the project in anticipation of what is surely Dzö-nga’s coming-of-age work. Vananidr is a black metal band from Stockholm, Sweden, officially born in 2018, but with roots going as far back as the mid ’90s, under the name Hydra. The band underwent several lineup changes along the decades, and in 2010 reformed under the name Synodus Horrenda, a monicker that guitarist and singer Anders “Flame” Eriksson held until 2018, when a new lineup was created under the name Vananidr. As of 2024, the band consists of Anders Eriksson on guitars and vocals, former Amon Amarth drummer Fredrik Andersson on drums, Per Lindström on bass and original Hydra founder Alexis “Titan” Xanthopoulos on guitars.In Silence Descent, Vananidr’s fifth studio album, as the title suggests, is an exploration of darkness and despair, a vessel to a world beyond the grave. Along the eight tracks, melodies of pure Nordic melancholy mix with equal amounts of frenzy, frustration and suffering, crafting a perfect example of Scandinavian black metal. Nel Buio, Italian for In the Dark, is a black wave project born by Clod "the Ripper" De Rosa (Blasphemer, ex-Septycal Gorge) in the Autumn of 2023 to combine black metal and 80s darkwave. The Line up was completed by Neil Grotti on guitars and Francesco Vellacifer on drums (both of Electrocution and Blasphemer's fame, among the many). Almost four years after the acclaimed Vsesvit, Ukrainian one-man atmospheric black metal band Severoth is back with a new studio album.Multi-instrumentalist Illia Rafalskyi took some time to gather his thoughts and introduce his latest work as follows.“Originally, By the Way of Light was intended as the spiritual successor for Vsesvit. I started working right after Vsesvit was finished, I wanted to createsomething powerful, energetic but yet light and bright. Something which will inspire people to be better versions of themselves. And to remember thatthere is always hope. Music was mostly composed and recorded at my home studio in Dnipro, Ukraine. Actively crafted from 2021 up until 23th february of 2022. Andintended to be released somewhere in 2022. But on the 24th of February my family and I woke up at 4 am from the sounds of distant explosions…That is when the Russian invasive full-scale war against Ukraine started.And our lives changed forever…For a full year since then I haven’t created a single note for this album and my mind was far from music, with exception of the second song, “Sons OfSteel Will”, for which I wrote lyrics in September 2022, inspired by the events of that period.Later in 2023, after more than a year of ongoing war we moved to a safer place and I was able to finish the album. So, I’ve spent around half a yearworking and re-working the material. In the summer 2023 drums and missing vocals were recorded. Music and lyrics I wrote myself. Lyrics are inUkrainian, but translations in English are featured in the booklet.
